Paying for sax

The thread title has a double meaning.

1) I'm looking for some good/date-friendly Jazz/Blues places with live music in NYC or thereabouts. I know about Birdland but beyond that I don't know much. I remember there was some place called Groove or whatever that was in...Williamsburg? Not sure.

2) If you were going to buy an instrument (specifically a slide trombone) where would you shop?

On the trombone side I'd look hard at craigslist. Since I'm gonna guess there are lots of parents who have instruments from when johnny joined band in 5th grade, that he hasn't touched in years.

If you're looking to start taking trombone lessons, find the teacher before buying the instrument. They might have an spare instrument they can lend you while you're starting out, or they can put you in touch with their more advanced students who are looking to upgrade.

I'd be cautious of buying from Craigslist because little Johnny's trombone that hasn't been touched in years, probably hasn't been maintained in at least as many years.

You call up 1 800-TOG-SLID and inquire about a used but loved trombone he's had in his closet since high school that gets zero mileage these days and needs a good home. I think I got some books for it too if you want them. You can have it as long as you cover shipping which may be a bit high as it's a fairly large package that would be getting sent from Alaska. I'll make sure it's cleaned up and in good shape if you want it.

Also you totally should have called this thread "paying for some good 'boning." :D

@TOGSolid: Huh, sorry it took me so long to respond. Busy week! Thanks for the offer - I'm going to be moving in the next few months which is when I think I may want one. Can I hit you up again then?

    Thanks!

The real question is why do you want to learn trombone when Tuba is the superior low brass instrument.

The one thing I know about trombone is don't grab the bell in fourth (?) position.

Also practice buzzing your lips, but that's any brasshole

please, please, please get some lessons. Nothing worse than a bad trombone player... well... there is the clarinet... or french horn...........
Your local professional musicians will thank you for it. Also I have a friend who is finishing his masters in jazz trombone performance up there. If you want I can get you his contact info. He will probably know where the best jazz clubs and places to purchase an instrument are.
