I just grabbed Braid for 99 cents and spent the day playing it and just finished it.

-It was well worth 99 cents.
    -It was fun.
-I used a walkthrough for about 40% of it and feel bad, but not too bad, because I wanted to finish it today.
-I have zero understanding of what just took place.

I like deep games, I like thinking games, I like plots that make me think. This was a little be too out there for me. I need something to latch onto to at least have some sort of idea what's happening.

What exactly the fuck is this Soul Calibur thing?

its a free to play soul calibur... thing. sounds like it uses a ticket system similar to tekken revolution, and i guess revolves around doing missions? so maybe something like weapon master mode from SC2? dunno.

I just YouTubed the stars thing.

I mean, I get what it was going for - I think? - but I think it is what people make of it. My personal opinion is it's a very bad story and a very good experiment.

A good story needs a plot, something concrete, and needs a story arc and all that. There can be twists, there can be stuff open for interpretation, there can be cliffhangers and plot threads and open ended questions. But there's a director - the author - who lays the groundwork for the story and starts you on your way.

Then there's this - which is kind of like those magnetic words people have on the fridge sometimes. There's a lot of words here, and kind of the framework of one story, but maybe two, or maybe a million stories! And the ending is "whatever you make of it!" and the author himself (from the little bit I've looked up now) is very adamant about not saying anything else, which to me says he has no idea either.

I wish I had played it back when it came out, because I think it's a good discussion starter, but I think it's a pretty bad story, that fortunately for me, some people on these forums and online have made out to be much more interesting than what's actually in the game.

So I need some advice: which Crash or Spyro available through the flash sale is the best? I never really played Spyro but did enjoy Crash back in the day. I'm getting CTR and want one more PSP-compatible game to go with it. What would you guys recommend? Also, are there any other must buys on the list? I don't have a Vita or PS3 but should be changing that soon. I was looking at Braid, Super Stardust HD, and Retro City but I'm not 100% sold on any of those yet.

It's not really a story so much as it's a commentary on the pursuit of mastery over systems, I think.

Let me preface this by saying that Crash 2, Warped, and all three Spyro games are excellent and an absolute steal at this price. You won't find a better use for $5.

That said, if you can only have one, I would give it to Crash Bandicoot: Warped

In my opinion it's STILL Naughty Dog's masterpiece

Keep in mind though, that neither the Crash nor the Spyro games work on Vita

    For some reason

And it is a great detriment to that system

Namco's F2P take on the series, like Tekken Revolution (and soon, Ace Combat Infinity).

Just got my NA Starlight Inception code for being a Kickstarter backer. Not sure why they gave it to me, as I already told them I wanted a PAL code. Oh well, I'll give the NA code away once I get my PAL code.

One time about 10-11 years ago I tried to buy a used copy of Suikoden II at a local EB Games. I don't remember the price, and I wasn't even aware of the series. It just looked pretty cool and caught my eye.

When the guy at the register went looking for it, he couldn't find it anywhere. He told me to come back later when a manager was there. I never did go back and ask about it, and later on I realized I missed out on something good. I take comfort in knowing that I probably never would have played it beyond the intro based on my gaming habits at the time.

    About.

    Fucking.

    Time.

If you are one of the many people who never had a chance to play this game, do it! This is your opportunity to enjoy one of the very (if not the) best JRPGs the PS1 had to offer. The story is wonderful.

The first Suikoden feels like they didn't quite know what they wanted to do just yet. Like a beta for Suikoden II. It's still worthwhile, but the sequel is the high point of the series.

There's a glitch in Suikoden II where you can walk straight up to a gate and push it until it moves out of the way, and you can gain early access to an area of the world with very high level enemies. You can get some decently leveled allies there too and power level until you're strong enough to not have problems with the first third of the game. I hope they leave that glitch in as the Clive/Elsa subquest is very, very difficult to do without it. I imagine it'll be left intact, because they'll probably just emulate the original disc or something with no changes.

  • RenzoRenzo Registered User regular
99% of PS1 and PSP games on PSN are disc images, direct rips of the original with no modification. So the chances of that glitch being in the PSN version are high.

Yeah, I would still rank the quality of the games at 2, 3, 5, 1, and of course 4 at the bottom. I own three of the four games that matter, so getting my hands on two would be pretty sweet. The sad part is no matter how many of the games are available, we'll never see an actual end to the story, which I give all my 'fuck you's to Konami for.

I remember starting Suikoden Tactics but it seemed pretty dull and it got lost in a move.

Honestly the only one you should really avoid is probably 4.

Suikoden 1 is basic, but also pretty short. It's not my fave Suikoden by any means, but I highly reccomend it if you play 2. Having knowledge of the events, characters and world of Suikoden 1 makes Suikoden 2 just THAT much better. Reoccuring characters, background info on parts of the word, etc.

To the point where I often think of Suikoden 1 as the prologue of Suikoden 2.

My personal rankings of the games by the way. 2/3, 5,1................................................................................................................................. (a bunch more elipses) ....4.

And then their is Teirkreis which is... well.... it doesn't really feel like a Suikoden game. And I kinda got disinterested in it, so I never even got to the midway point. Not a bad game, just.... meh. (Not to mention some attrociously bad english voice acting.)

For the most part no, though while I don't know whether this will be a thing with the PSN versions, you can import your save file from 1 into 2 and there will be an event late game that lets you recruit the protagonist from 1(and an additional reward if you recruited all of the 107 stars in the first one). He's also broken as hell.

  • joshofalltradesjoshofalltrades Class Traitor Smoke-filled roomRegistered User regular
It helps to have background information on the Toran Republic when you play 2 as well. Otherwise it's kind of weird when you get to that part of the game. "What is this whole other country all about? Why do these people know each other?"

  • DonnictonDonnicton Registered User regular
Thinking back on it, I remember why I never played the damn games even though I had all five of them and tactics for the DS. You practically have to be tethered to a guide while playing it because there are 107 recruitable characters in each game and damn near every one of them is permanently missable. And you needed all of them for any completion content.

  • SteevLSteevL What can I do for you? Registered User regular
I guess I'll just keep my eye on both games for the moment. It's not like I don't have enough to play. I started playing Tales of Vesperia a few months ago on my 360, but stopped for various reasons. Seemed pretty cool. I hadn't played a JRPG since Valkyria Chronicles...assuming that counts. I really need to get back to Vesperia before I forget how to play/where to go/what the game is all about.

And that's why I should hold off on Suikoden. I know that if I start it, I'll end up taking a break for a few days, which turns into a couple of weeks/months/what-was-that-JRPG-I-was-playing-again?

  • The WolfmanThe Wolfman Registered User regular
Now I will you should absolutely play 1 before 2, because of all the callbacks, continued storylines, and the like. It's more like one enormous experience than it is two separate games.

It is still Peggle compared to FFX-2. Seriously, when that game came out so many PS2s were thrown due to 99% completion rates while following a guide.

This might be rose coloured nostalgia talking, because it has been god knows how many years since I played either game, but I remember both games perfectly complementing one another. It wan't like your average trilogy type, where it's obstinately one story with clear points where they took the knife to separate it into more manageable chunks. It wasn't like your standard sequel either, where it's a brand new day with a brand new, but unrelated adventure with brand new arcs (or worse when they try to hammer in a connection that wasn't there in the first place ("I was really the mastermind of the events in the first story, even though you never heard of me until this exact moment.). It's still mostly a new story told with new characters, but then a whole bunch of the old crew from the first game show up, and it feels totally natural why they would want to join. And along the way they get continuations of all the stories and arcs they had as well.

...Like I said though, this may in reality be completely wrong and shit, being cribbed off of memories from... *checks release dates* Well fuck me in the keyhole, damn near 15 years.
