EDIT If I'm going to buy a Dynasty Warriors game, should it be Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends?
Short Answer: No. Long Answer: Kind of.
Xtreme Legends games are Expansion Packs, more or less, to the base games. So if you want to jump in on a DW game, get 8 and -then- XL if you dig it. Or, if you have a PS4, get it on there since it's the Complete Edition with both in one.
Let me break down Abyss Odyssey for you if you're interested in it, because I bought it on a whim and it's way better than I would've ever thought.
So, there's this Warlock asleep at the center of the Earth. He's being assualted by nightmare demons and it's causing earthquakes and chasms to open up in Chile and there's monsters all up ins. You start out playing as a woman who's a product of the warlock's dreams as well. You head down into the abyss with the goal of killing the warlock at the bottom. The map is three columns of squares that can connect in different ways. Areas are color coded and rated easy/moderate/hard, and it's all procedurally generated.
The first time you die, you unlock a second character. I think he's called the Abyss Monk. He's basically this badass warrior comprised of the souls of all who've died in the abyss. The lady(her name escapes me) has a quicker rapier type fighting style, and he has a slower but stronger two handed fighting style. There's a third character too. Some kind of lady who uses polearms(who I suspect is actually the Warlock), but I haven't unlocked her yet. Each character gets three abilities that you can upgrade damage, mana generation or invulnerability frames on. Special attacks can be used as much as you want. They don't use mana. Mana is gained by killing enemies, and picking up orbs. Once your meter is full, you press square and triangle to unleash a magic attack. On normal enemies, this allows you to capture them once you beat them, and you can transform into them at any time, essentially giving you an extra life. Combat itself plays similar Smash Bros, but a little clunkier. You never really fight more than 3 or 4 enemies at once, though. And once you finish a battle, you really feel like you were in a fight.
When you die, a Chilean soldier will jump in and you can control them. You can pick up all your dropped gear, and if you make it to an altar and have a token, you can revive with all your gear still. If the soldier dies, you have to start back at the surface. You lose all your collected gear, but you keep your levels and gold.
It's suuuuper rad, you guys.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
Totally agree, Abyss Odyssey is crazy awesome. I actually beat it last night!
HOWEVS:
Your Replacement Soldier doesn't actually pick up ALL your dropped gear, just the weapon. You lose any necklaces or bracelets you have. You keep keys and whatever soul you have. You also don't need a token to revive, it just has to be a Character Altar and not a Warlock Altar. Camp Tokens are used to reset your spawn point.
Also, Abyss Monk is unlocked when you beat your second Mini-boss I think. At least he wasn't unlocked for me when I died the first time but he did unlock when I beat the game the first time. Thrd lady is unlocked by
going to the yellow room on the map and throwing money at her. You have to pay to unlock her, not sure how much.
Devs said they'll be adding more characters and monsters in the future!

A couple corrections:
Each character has 6 skills, you just equip 3 at a time
You don't need a token to revive at an altar. Also, a couple other things can cause you to revive - certain rooms, beating one of the major bosses.
Each character has 6 skills, you just equip 3 at a time.
Ooo, THAT'S awesome. I didn't know that at all. Maybe I can finally find something for Katriana to use beside her fireball. The other two seem pretty worthless.
Oh, neat! I guess I kept getting unlucky and never found a character alter when I died... Devs have also said that the Warlock is supposed to get harder the more people that beat him. Like, once a certain number of people beat the game, it'll get stronger attacks and such.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
Character Altars seem to be about 30% or less of the altars. They were tough for me to get too. I revived mostly because of the Phantom Monster levels.

Which other two do you have? Her endless stabbing is fairly nice (you have to hold for it). If memory serves, you get the skills as follows:
1-Starting
2-Defeat a clone
3-Defeat Verbum Dei
4-Accept the devils' gift
5-The second starting area
6-The respawn area (all greyscale)
So I've not played Tales of games before, and I picked up the Symphonia Chronicles deal a while back. Anyway, I'm trying to get a feel for if it's just not for me or if I need to give it some more time to take off. I think i'm about 6 hours into the game. I just escaped from captivity and i'm in a desert. So far, the gameplay, story, etc. have been okay but not really grabbing me and I've heard it's a pretty long game, so I'm trying to get an idea for if maybe the story picks up, maybe the combat starts to open up a little more, etc. Right now it's just super simplistic and I have very few special skills to use.

Abyss Odyssey is made by the same guys who did Zeno Clash and Rock of Ages, so you can expect the same level of weirdness and freaky gameplay. They threw their efforts into making a sidescrolling roguelike game, which is completely different from their previous games (as expected).
My first impression of it was "Well, this is weird." Then I heard it was ACE Team and then I thought "Oh. That makes sense."
Each character has 6 skills, you just equip 3 at a time.

Yeah, you're missing some of her good stuff. It's not a taunt, it's a counter - I'm not sure the precise window but it punishes hard. The upswing's decent for plucking things out of the air or following up a throw.
The skills you don't have are:
Step forward and stab endlessly (as long as you hold the button)
Pirouette, cutting both sides multiple times
Sliding kick, with a short hop back at end.
All three are quite useful. Especially the last one, because it can be upgraded for total projectile invincibility.
How difficult is Abyss Odyssey? Also, does it have local multi? I might pick this up to play with my brother, but I want to be sure it won't drive me to murder.
I does have local multi. The fighting is very hard; you have to learn how to use the system well but I still managed to make it to the end and beat the boss my first time in about 2 hours and I REALLY suck at fighting games.
The problem I think is that it takes so much concentrated effort to make the character face the other direction. You literally have to be doing nothing else to be able to turn around. That's where the big dissconnect is. Turning around is basically a fighting move like any other; it's never part of a move like, well, every other fighting game out there.
Wow, yeah. Pincoya is quite powerful with those halberds. Made it halfway to the warlock before I even took any damage. Had to stop playing, unfortunately
Dumb old work making me have to go to bed...
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.
It's just a shame her jellyfish specials are pretty meh. The forward shot flies over most stuff and has a fucking cooldown. The spark is tiny and basically requires use of the others first.
The rotating shield has potential though, if the defense bonus persists for the whole time it's whirling around...
Parrying is just a fancy way of blocking. Self preservation is for cowards. But I figured out what my problem was. I had a second controller active, so I was playing encounters intended for two people. Once that was taken care of murder prevailed and the warlock died.
It's mostly the number of enemies you have to fight at a time. Single player you only have to deal with 2 enemies on screen for the most part, with 2 players you get 4. And the Red ghost fights have 2 enemies instead of 1, which made progression next to impossible for me. I actually managed to kill them both once, but it was hard as fuck. They will juggle your ass like crazy, I was losing like a quarter of my health every time I got hit.
