I really hope the job end state is 'every class has one job for each role'. I don't care if it's weird to tank with a bow. MAGIC answers all questions.
IIRC a long while ago they did mention that they'd ultimately like every class to have at least two jobs. Like Arcanist.
Well, considering that jobs are equivalent to specs from other games, I'd always assumed they'd have at least two per class--it's pretty weird that they launched with one 'spec' for most classes to begin with.
Eh it's just a timing thing I would think, take time to make them and when they were looking to launch the game that was time better spent on the core game instead.
I would imagine a fair amount of classes will get a new job in the expansion personally.
I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of the current classes get a second job before the expansion.

That would be awesome but i'm keeping my hopes in check. After all they are likely to add those in content patches if they do add them, and we get content patches every 3 months. I don't imagine there are much more than 3 content patches before the expansion. We know this class/job is coming in 2.3, 2.4 will be September if they stay on schedule, and December would be patch 2.5.
They could squeeze them in in 2.4 or 2.5 but it doesn't seem as likely to me personally.

I think they said initially they wanted the first expansion a year after release. That seems ambitious to me personally so I was accounting for early 2015 just in case.

Oh yeah they did mention that didn't they? I also seem to recall they had already started work on it shortly before ARR's release. Eh, maybe they could pull it off then. It sounds like we might be getting some solid Expansion info at FanFest and perhaps something during the 15th Producer Letter.

Seems so, although they also mentioned the expansion would include as much content as the release of the game had, which is like WOAH content so I'm skeptical they can pull it off.
That being said I don't know how they release content at the pace they do currently, so i'm thinking shady demon deals or something must be in the mix, maybe sacrificial children? Who knows

Also while I am here I am liking what I am seeing in these E3/Dev Letter revelations of late and fully intend to return to this game in time. Wildstar and real life concerns have my attention right now though.

It is definitely something. Most MMOs would be hard pressed to even patch their game as regularly as SE drops full on content patches.

I was actually rather shocked that Rogue/Ninja came before Gunner. Like, I expected a Rogue type class eventually (before the expansion even), but never in a million years would I have thought it'd be before Gunner. Everything in Limsa screams Gunner class. While I am pumped for the new class I must admit I am a little disappointed that it isn't Gunner.

Both in and out of character, I am basically this guy right now.
That said, I'm liking what I'm hearing so far. The game badly needs more tank and healer variants, but I think this is basically a test rollout for new classes and jobs. It's probably easier to slot in a DPS than it is a tank or healer, and once new jobs can be reliably implemented, we'll see a better balance of them going forward. That's my guess, anyway.

While Guns are super fuckin Final Fantasy, No Rogue/Thief/Ninja class is a borderline warcrime for an FF game, so I'm not surprised YoshiP fastracked that.
Besides, Gunner is an expansion seller. Or at the very least a great 3.X patch. I could see them doing a 1-2-1 release cycle for classes, since there are a BUNCH he wants to include. I have no doubt we'll see Gunner in some form or another in 2015.
But what I'm really curious about though, is what tank class/job could the possibly be adding in the expansion.
Zerker? Soldier? Dark Knight maybe? I mean DRK would kind of overlap with Maurader, and I'd rather see it as a new DPS class since ALL THE DAMAGE BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD, but you never know. Spending health for damage mitigation would be an interesting mechanic.
I mean the Healer Class is Red Mage obviously. Like, it's not humanly possible for it to be more obvious. But that tank class is going to be a toss up
All I know is: there better be some kind of steal/pickpocket/mug ability.
I always had a Thief in my party in pretty much every FF game, and all they were allowed to do ever was steal. Every turn. Steal. You've got an Echo Screen? MINE NOW BITCH.

Out of those, I'd wager Zerker, with damage resistance tied to how much damage you're doing; the more damage you're doing per second, the more that red haze makes you ignore your wounds. Only problem is, it seems like it would also overlap with Marauder. Seems more likely it would be a secondary job, like how ACN --> SCH/SMN.

I'm of the mind that Gunner->Chemist will be the Healer class.
As for a new tank class, I'm not sure. If I had to take a wild guess I'd say Samurai would seem the most likely. Though typically Samurai is more of a damage dealer. Unlike my Gunner theory, this one is pure guessing.
Red Mage I can easily see going the FFXI route of buffer/debuffer/DoTs. Kind of a cross between Bard and Scholar(?).
I may as well continue my wild speculations, since I enjoy the Hell out of it:
GLD-> Dark Knight
MRD-> Beserker
CNJ-> Geomancer
ACH-> Beastmaster? Actually maybe something like a Ranger for pure deeps.
LNC-> No clue. Hell maybe Beastmaster or some sort of dragon tamer pet class.
THM-> Red Mage. Could go to CNJ maybe, but Geomancer would seem to fit real well with CNJ.
PUG-> Dancer
Not sure if SE would go for any sort of dedicated pet class, nor am I all that sure they'd go for something DPS-y if the class already has a DPS job.
Axen on
A Capellan's favorite sheath for any blade is your back.
Pugilists do not have the base class skills to be a healer or tank when you get the job crystal at 30. Or 50 for that matter.
I don't know that that matters all that much. Think of Summoner, with its job skills that change class skills to something different.
I could see something without heals easily gaining them that way. THM getting a healer job (could use RDM), and the first passive turns fire spells into heals. Something like that.

I'm trying to think of Dancer types of things that PGL could go to.
Maybe:
30: Basic Healing move: Heals all nearby party members with attack - Opo-opo form bonus: Heals over time. Bonus heal potency from behind enemy. Changes to Raptor form.
35: Healing debuff move: Applies a debuff to enemy which heals anyone who damages the enemy - Can only be performed in Raptor form. Bonus potency from behind. Changes to Coeurl
40: Other debuff move: Applies a debuff to enemy which reduces all outgoing damage - Can only be performed in Raptor form. Bonus potency or effect from flank. Changes to Coeurl
45: Buff - mitigation to all nearby party members - Opo-opo form bonus: Shields a certain amount. Bonus potency from flank.
50: Super buff - Increases Skill and Spell speed to all party members by a small amount, stacks up to 3 times(Basically a Mini-party-wide greased lightning). Can only be done in Coeurl form, changes form to Opo-Opo. Grants stack of Greased Lightning.
Can they main heal? I don't know. Maybe not without a directed heal. But they could be the off-healer, giving basically a constant regen to their team while the sch/whm does the heavy lifting for any big attacks.
Also they'd then still have the basic tenants of the MNK/PGL, with wanting to be full-stack all the time, and having placement be a big thing. They can still "Oh shit" give some aoe heals, but it'll be at its peak effectiveness with greased lightning stacks and the form.

THM/CJN are likely to become Time Mage or some other true caster equivalent that is not a pure DPS job.
Marauder is likely to become Dark Knight though lancer has a chance of it (I'd vote unlikely, but possible).
Archer is likely to become Ranger.
Puglist/Lancer are harder to pin down.
