So, apparently you can choose a god to increase the chance of grouping with people who also chose it. So are we gonna choose a PA god? The god of wangs?
So the 360 version has tearing, because of no VSync. PS3 version has Vsync.
Not sure about fps drops.
Based off of this I cancelled the 360 collector's edition and ordered the PS3 version instead, but I just got an email from Amazon that they're already shipping the 360 and it's too late to cancel. So I cancelled the PS3 order. Oh well, I hate the PS3 controller anyway.
My 360 is really loud and has some frequent slowdown on newer games: I see it a lot in Blighttown, but also while playing Halo 4. I wonder if trading in for a new slim 360 would correct this or not.
Just a heads up, if you're used to playing console games, then some tearing due to desync is NOT going to ruin your experience. There are very few console games that run at 60 FPS and never drop or 30 FPS locked without every dropping. It's simply not the issue some make it out to be.
Now if a game is dropping below 30 consistently then you're going to have serious slowdown performance issues. Here we're talking about Blighttown, or Dragon's Dogma when a lot of spell effects are on screen. But if the 360 version of Dark Souls runs variable between 30-60 it wouldn't be that big of a deal. You would notice it if you were panning your camera quickly in a boss and what not, but what I'm saying is it's something you'll be used to if you play games regularly.
Maybe I don't understand the terms like I think I do: I'm not just talking about just a framerate drop, the game literally slows down. I watched me parry in slow motion, which was kinda cool at the time. I've had framerate drops in Dragon's Dogma as well, but it seems like things still happen in regular time. Regardless I'm locked into my choice now. I'm just wondering if a newer xbox will alleviate some of the issue, but it doesn't sound like anyone knows the answer to that.
Edit: the only thing I found mentioned online in the xbox forum is that slowdown could be a precursor to the HD failing. A new HD is a pretty cheap fix comparatively, and I've got the memory card to back up saves. Still interested if anyone else has figured out a solution.

So the Sawgrass Best Buy is having a midnight launch, and the website claims they'll have the Black Armor Edition. Wish me luck... (I hope everyone's there for Titanfall.)

Sounds like Tears (GameFAQs), Hunt (Fextralife), and Struggle (/r/darksouls2) have been taken by big groups (which doesn't necessarily remove them from our options, but makes them somewhat less practical).
I bought the CE guide as well both because I am weak and because it will be here before I can play the game. I have a five day weekend starting on Friday so I am not going to play until then. But I am going to read the fuck out of the guide. I know a lot of people think discovering new stuff on your own is awesome (and it is!) But between my wife, child, and job I just do not have the time to waste. My copy of the game arrives on Thursday according to Amazon prime. So fucking hype.

It helps that it's a sexy, hardcover guide. If it's anything like the guide for Dark Souls 1, it's totally worth the money.
Demon's Souls LE guide (and full soundtrack) was so good. Hope the DS2 guide is at least as good.
The game and guide shipped, but it'll take a least a week to get here. Preorder bonuses mean I have to ship to my APO instead of picking things up at my BX.
It'll be hard choosing between the /vg/ DSG god and the PA G&T god.
Apparently EpicNameBro had some part in the guide, which I'm pretty excited about. He's always put out great stuff and is probably one of the biggest Dark Souls community figureheads there is.
Ok guys, after playing the first hour or two, I've got some initial impressions. They're going to be as spoiler free as possible, more concerned with overall feel and technical stuff. A quick note on me: been playing the series since Demon's Souls (all on PS3, including DS2), love it to bits. I've stayed in the dark about 2 as much as possible, so it's all entirely new and bewildering to me. So! Here we go:
-Playing on PS3
-There was a 185 MB patch as soon as I popped it in, and then it installed to the hard drive as well (that took about 5 minutes).
-As soon as you fire it up, it downloads some server-based stuff, and then it tries to connect you to the server (first example of it being server-based this time around). Unfortunately, it's telling me the servers aren't up yet, so I'm only playing in offline mode. So no invasions or messages or anything like that.
-You don't pick your character right away, but you do it when you meet an NPC, about 5-10 minutes in, depending on how much you dick around (I dicked around a lot). Character creation is a LOT more robust this time around, it feels like. Picking your item brings me terror all over again, worried I'm picking the wrong thing. I went with a ring that boosts HP slightly; the other options all seemed to be consumables, except for one mysterious item that I'm not sure isn't just rubbish.
-Overall, I'm really enjoying it. It feels like Dark Souls, but slightly off (but not in a bad way). The dialog boxes are all slightly tweaked, as are all the HUD elements; it creates this weirdly off-putting feeling in me, considering I've played so much of the first one I can see it in my sleep. It's a very weird feeling, playing something that seems almost familiar, and yet I'm walking around, absolutely clueless as to where I'm going or what. It's great, because it reminds me of my initial playthrough of the first one, before I knew what was really going on in the game.
-Graphics seem slightly better? I think? It's really tough to tell. It seems a bit crisper, for whatever that's worth, but that's probably all in my head. I think it's the saturation; it's not all bright and colorful (yet, anyway), but there doesn't seem to be a persistent grey/green grime over the initial area like there is in Firelink Shrine. The environments so far look unlike anything from the first game, so that's great.
-I'm playing the dual-wielding character, with the intent to go Dex/Int. I haven't come across any magic yet. She feels slightly faster here than in Dark Souls, but that's very likely due to the fact that my last character I was playing in the original was a Faith Tank. My new character is....not that. Dual wielding is a blast so far though, and very much out of my comfort zone (I'm used to going everywhere with my shield up).
-BIGGEST CONFUSION SO FAR: torches. So you get a torch relatively quickly, and the game tells you you can light them at a bonfire. The thing is, though, the torch doesn't show up in your inventory to equip or anything, and when you go to a bonfire, you have to cycle your option (like when you can talk to someone OR pick up an item); "light torch" doesn't show up in the bonfire menu when you sit down. I'm sure this is so you don't reset enemies if you want to light your torch, but it was confusing at first. Once you light it, you have to keep it in your left hand or it goes out; there's also a timer on it (5 min initially, don't know if you can lengthen that or not), and once it's out, you lose the torch. In the initial area there's a bunch of things you can light, so I tried to light them all to see if the game gave me anything, but I couldn't get them all lit. Ho hum.
So yeah! Please feel free to ask anything else you might want to know, I'll do my best to answer. I have yet to come across the weapons I was asked about earlier, so I can't answer that yet. No spoons. Sorry!

If you stand in front of the bonfire, you should be able to cycle from sit at bonfire to light torch (I think with triangle? I can't remember the cycle button).

@italianranma: I haven't tried yet, but I believe you can; one of the tutorial messages was about 2-handing your weapon, and when I did I futzed with it a bit and got what I believe was a parry animation, so....I think so? You certainly can't when you're dual-wielding though.

If you're dual wielding and you have 1.5x the strength required for each weapon (so, if one requires 9 and the other requires 10, you have 15), you can hold triangle and switch to power stance, which changes your L2 and R2 attacks to unique dual attacks based on the 2 weapons you have. It's pretty badass.
