This is why I take a habbit to wearing the ones I trade on the lanyard as per rules. The ones I love to wear I put on my messenger bag. Still though eagle eyes still spot them on the bag and ask away.
I'll do what I can to help fellow pin collectors but if it's not on the lanyard its not for trade.
I was upset at one thing this year... It was the KI fight stick pin... I practiced like crazy to get good at KI and at the day of the con I was READY! I beat a really good dev and won the pin... Only to have my hype destroyed when I found out they gave it to anyone who played them..
. Poopy.
My first experience with pins was at Prime '13, and I lost about half the pins on a lanyard and didn't even know it because all the backs came off. This year, I wore only a select few (specifically for trades) and all the rest I kept in my leg pouch. It's kind of like a fanny pack, but obviously not because it's slung low and to the side, like a holster.

Reading some of these stories I'm pretty bummed I missed the pin trading event, I didn't end up trading with anyone during PAX (aside from Jerry for the helmet Tycho). Not sure if I just was unlucky with running into fellow pin pals, but I still enjoyed collecting them on my own.
Is it just me, or did it seem much more difficult to get pins at east this year, vs. the last Prime?
At prime, it was pretty much a cake walk to get a full set for myself as well as my aus pin pal, and was able to get free pins mostly on the show floor and trade them for pins I needed. Barely completed a set for myself at east and wasn't able to get a second Leroy for my pin pal.
I do feel bad for people who were not mobile at east, as the Leroy pin would be basically impossible for them to get. Usually you can sweet talk your way into swag if you swing it right.....but Blizzard was having none of it. I've literally bought every blizzard game since like Lost Vikings and I knew more about the company history than the guy handing out the pins, but he wasn't budging.
That's the second or third time I've seen someone mention that mobility could be an issue for some pins (most recent being finding the Leeroy pin) As a wheelchair bound person, this kind of concerns me... For the most part, traversing PAX Aus last year was fine for me, and the disabled access cards allowed my brothers (carers) and I into shorter lines, priority for panel seating etc, and thats great, but it wont help at all if I am on one end of the show floor and a pin is at the other end at x time. The best i could do is probably get my brother or a friend run there and get it for me. I am in a great hardcore group and i dont want to let them down, I will definitely be planning ahead as best i can, checking twitter, forums etc.

I'm wondering if there's a simple solution, like making sure that the pins that have the "find X guy who moves around the floor" theme get enough floor time and area coverage. I don't think it's the fact that Leeroy was moving is what killed it. I think it's the fact that he came out twice a day for like half an hour, didn't always cover the whole floor, and wasn't immediately recognizable unless you knew to look for him. If they made him more like a mobile booth (looks like a mascot, has a booth's worth of pins, stays out for at least half the day total), it'd be neat. Let multiple people at the Blizzard booth be Leeroy. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

One thing that I will say for the guy who was doing Leeroy is that he WAS trying to take mobility into it…as well as he could. He didn't know where he was going until Blizzard told him to go there, and there were several times when he told the crowd to move aside so that someone could yell his name and get a pin( I saw this twice, both times someone was in a wheelchair and he managed to see them and make sure they got one). Unfortunately, he usually had around 30 people around him screaming at him, and unless they managed to get close enough that he was able to see him it was usually not possible.
As I said before there were some issues with the Leeroy pin/mobility issues…but it was my favorite to get honestly. A friend and I made a game of it to try and find him every time and spent a considerable amount of time doing so. There were even times where we would jump out of line(once when we were the next person in a line that we had been in for like 40 minutes) just to go find him. As many issues as people had finding him, hunting him with my friend made it a favorite of mine.
Yeah, I mean 'most' things at a show like PAX I am capable to do, all be it slower than the average person. Getting through crowds is pretty hard for me if I'm alone.. Good to hear that the guy did take the time to help out those who may have needed extra help in acquiring the pin, and from my experience last year, all the enforcers were really a great help for whatever I needed.

I would hope that, if someone who was in a wheelchair approached the guy at the Blizzard booth who was actually handing out the pins and made the case of "hey, I can't get to Leroy because I'm not mobile" , he would make an exception...but I know they were making absolutely no leeway for the able-bodied.
Just voicing my concerns. I don't really know what I'm asking for, to be honest. I understand how things work and if they were told not to break protocol ever and give out pins then thats just how it is... I want to take part in 'the hunt' as best i can, and not have all my pins given to me at the door (as tempting as that sounds :P) But it would be good just to know that if it ever came to it, i would still have an equal chance.
Is it just me, or did it seem much more difficult to get pins at east this year, vs. the last Prime?
I agree 100% with this. I had to dedicate a lot more of my time to getting pins last weekend then I did at Prime. I just hope that this is not the beginning of a progressive difficulty increase
Something that also works in a pinch are the plastic earring backs that you could get at a craft store. I bought a box of 200 for about $2.50 and they are absolutely, positively secure.
I've linked to these clutch-lock pin backs at least a dozen times since I joined this forum, and for good reason. The one's Frostbyte recommended are definitely secure, but they're harder to take on and off than these Clutch backs are, but the Clutch ones are just as secure (I shake-test my lanyard before I go out, and not a single pin budges). They're also quite a bit cheaper.
Basically, if you intend to do a lot of trading or otherwise taking your pins on and off your lanyard, you'd be better served buying these kind than the other kind.
Ya... I decided I'm going to buy a ton before prime, and sell small baggies of 10 for $5 a pop. That is practically zero profit, I'm just interested in making people happier by not loosing their pins. lol
@Ayefkay if you (or anyone) who has mobility problems with pins (or any part of the show) immediately find an enforcer and talk to them. I promise you they'll/we'll set it right. I was in a strange position where I was injured but I was also an enforcer and it didn't feel right asking for special consideration. If an attendee came to me saying they couldn't get Leeroy Jenkins I would absolutely have solved the problem for them and made sure they got whatever they needed (pin, etc).
Seriously all: if you have a medical condition that precludes you being able to get a pin when you're at a show immediately tell an enforcer. We will make it right!

I was thinking about it, and I think part of it was the 3 days vs. 4 days. I found 4 days really reduced the traffic in the expo hall. I was able to spend a few hours walking between Second Son and MTG to get pins for trade fodder almost right away.
There were actually over 40 pins that I had to get at Prime, vs. only like 25 at East (because I already had all Staff heads) and it was super super easy to get all pins without spending $ at prime...I had to spend a lot more at East.

Yea man, everyone I've met is super helpful when it comes to any kind of medical condition or disability, and not just staff, but fellow con goers as well.
The issue with Leeroy was definitely how many people were following/chasing him, but what if he possibly set up a system where, once he was out there, he tweeted "hey, i'll be at X from y till z, come get me." and then when people came to find him, he lined them up?

Geez, yeah, I've lost a few pins too, especially last year at PAX East... lost 2 of my PAX East set, I was heartbroken. I should look into those pin backs, they look awesome. When you trade pins, do you keep the original backs somewhere nearby?
Visit my website, thepintrader.com, the first Pinny Arcade store!
I had locking backs at East and whenever I traded I just exchanged pins with the other person and let them keep whatever back they had. Unless someone specifically wants the round vs. Merch rubber pin back, I doubt it would be a problem.

What do you think the chances are we'd ever get official Pinny Arcade locking Pin backs? Maybe with a tiny insignia on them or something, I'd buy those.

You can count on me (and I'm sure plenty of other Aussie pinsters) to have your back bro.
...especially since didn't we make an agreement that I would be riding around on your lap so I can skip lines and stuff? I'd probably feel like I owe you a pin or two for that.
I have to admit. I did not see Leroy Jenkins, more like HEARD him.
Correction, you heard me. The second time I found Leeroy I was the first person to shout. It was like ringing the dinner bell, everybody swarmed him after that.

Also, a Cosplay Leeroy would be slightly less cool looking, but definitely safer, than a Mascot Leeroy.
