I think I screwed up my 3DS XL...

DrezDrez Registered User regular
So, last night I dumped some water on my 3DS XL accidentally.

I immediately powered it off and did not turn it on again until this morning.

It's 99% functional, but the A button seems to work intermittently - it is unresponsive at times.

Any advice other than "open it up and tinker with it" (I have neither the tools nor aptitude for that as evidenced by the dissected remains of a PSP-1000 sitting in my dresser drawer) and "send to Nintendo"? I am pretty sure it's out of warranty now, even if the water damage didn't invalidate the warranty anyway.

If, worst comes to worst, I need to buy a new one...does anyone know if you need the A button to do a 3DS-to-3DS transfer?

Meh...

Well I would say do the rice trick that some people do with cel phones to see if that fixes it first

    Hmm ok.

Would I leave the 3DS open or closed?

I would say open? but maybe someone in the 3ds thread knows more about it?

I would be willing to bet that a residue film, from whatever the water left behind after evaporating, is messing with your button, since you've already got water on it and voided the warranty, might as well pop it open and give the button contacts a gentle scrubbing with a toothbrush and maybe a little alcohol on a q-tip if its really bad, and immediately dab up your mess with a lint free towel.

Thanks. But like I said, I have neither the tools nor technical aptitude for that. I've tried fixing handhelds before and I always end up with a pile of widgets instead of a fixed handheld. :(

But...your explanation makes sense. A layer of film.

But! I actually came here to say it's fully functioning again.

Nintendo builds their handhelds to handle a lot.

As someone said in the 3ds thread someone kept theirs as a good luck token as it took a round
My DS looks like it went through hell and it still keeps on ticking

I would say there was still just some water in there under the button. Without airflow it takes a lot longer to evaporate. If it is working now, then it is probably all gone =)

I would do the rice trick anyway, just to try and drawn out any leftover moisture.
    Wouldnt hurt.

    This.

It was probably surface tension holding the water against gravity and using it over time will cause it to slowly seep out.

not a doctor, not a lawyer, examples I use may not be fully researched so don't take out of context plz, don't @ me
