Help me physical?

So, I have a fair amount of programming background. I want to start working on a project. For this project, I will need to interact with real world, physical switches and indicator lights. I.. Don't know how to do that. My weak google-fu just keeps sending me to like networks switches and that sort of thing.

I just need a place to start looking. Anybody got any pointers?
