It's 2 salvage corvettes for a frigate, 4 for a cap ship. The way I stole them was to fly a wing of interceptors ahead of the salvagers, running distraction. The salvagers were therefore not targeted and I easily pilfered their ships.
That's pretty close to what I used to do in HW1. The difference is that I'd just use scouts instead and left them mixed up with the corvettes to act as distractions.
Kelptomania strikes again! If you look closely, you can see another victim of sticky fingers being sent in for a paint job.
Unfortunately I didn't have enough salvage corvettes available to nab the second destroyer. They were busy hauling back a bunch of frigates
I must say, that Ion Cannon frigate looks a little odd...
Ugh jesus christ I can't beat Diamond Shoals wtf is going on
just glue two support frigates to your mothership right away. it's just as bad as it ever was I had 2 destroyers, 2 ion frigates and 4 assault frigates doing most of my dirty work there, and i went into red a couple times, but the support frigates really help.

Sorry if this has been asked but do we know cataclysm isn't being updated?
Because Randy Pitchford tells people on twitter literally every day that they don't have the source code for it, nor can anybody find it, so they can't make it.
(which is sad for me personally because I actually like Cataclysm slightly more than HW1)

I wonder if any intrepid modders will step up and try to make a Cataclysm mod for the remaster.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

The siege cannon will always have a special place in my heart.
I'm also reminded that I really should back up my Cataclysm disk to an .iso for safe keeping.

Considering the Homeworld community's intrepid modders also double as its insanely ambitious modders, I'd be surprised if there wasn't a team out there already working on that. (I certainly hope so - I want my missile Acolytes, dammit.)
Really anyone that had gotten a start porting to Homeworld 2 will probably go a long way, since Remastered seems to be basically a modernized HW2 engine.
In hw1, sending fewer salvage ships than necessary will spin the ship in circles. You can't capture the turanic carrier, but you could certainly troll it while your frigates cut it to pieces.
Why couldn't they just make fighters and corvettes build as squads in hw1?
Because then the fiction of "We didn't touch these games at all gameplay-wise, just made them prettier" would be even more obvious than it already is, I'd imagine.
I mean, they already doubled the cost of strike craft and added research costs in because ????????
However, you CAN customize the colors of your single player game; it just uses whatever active color settings you have in Multiplayer. Hence my Kushan ships being all green with Taiidani emblems.
Anybody able to successfully broadcast this? I tried several times last night, and the friends watching reported seeing nothing but a big green screen with a mouse-cursor waving around. Even when I watched my own stream, all I could see was a green screen and mouse cursor in the broadcast window.

I failed the Wasteland because the enemy mothership keeps running away. I clearly need a thousand Bombers.
The answer, as always, capture more ships. Specifically the Ion Array Frigates. If your quick you can get at least 6 of the buggers. Combine that with whatever fleet you have should be enough to take out the carrier.
How many Salvage Corvettes steal one Ion Frigate?
I'm going full Guren Lagann.
Assuming it's the same as the original, it's 2 corvettes to steal frigates and resource collectors, 3 for capital ships (destroyers/missile destroyers), and 5 for super capital ships (carriers and heavy cruisers)
Enemy ships tend to prioritise salvage corvettes as soon as they see them, but there are a few tactics you can use to help (spoilers in case you want to work it out for yourself):
Assigning a repair corvette to each salvage corvette massively improves their survival, as they can take a single hit from a lot of weapons (ion frigates, for eg), and get repaired before they can be hit again.
Exploit the 3D space and get the corvettes under/behind them before issuing the salvage order. There's generally less coverage away from the front arc of the ship, so they won't be as vulnerable as they approach.
It can be worth sending more corvettes than you need too, so it's easier to replace one you lose. Especially if there are other ships that'll try to pick off your corvettes as they're dragging your new ship back home. Left overs should follow, and automatically move in to replace a lost ship. (I haven't actually tried this on remastered yet, so it might not work like that)
Mission 3 stuff:
I built up a decent force before jumping back, so I got auto-levelled with five assault frigates pounding on my cryotrays. I lost one before I could do anything to stop it (especially as you don't seem to be able to heal them with repair corvettes any more). I captured 2 frigates, but neither joined my fleet.
As I remember in the original, the first one was lost, but any more you caught, you kept.
Not really bothered (I always retired them for more Ion/Support Frigate space), but I wondered if that was the same for everyone else.
I'm going to back with a smaller force, see if I can save that tray. 100,000 people died because of auto-levelling...
Regarding strategy.
I can confirm that it is important to do the following thing with salvage corvettes. Not every strategy has changed. I am going to try that repair corvette thing.

I wouldn't be surprised if that's all directly tied to the multiplayer balancing numbers. If true, shit is gonna get hilarious once they start messing with the MP balance.
I'd be even a little mad if I was interested in HW1 for anything other than the campaign. I always was more of a HW2 junkie due to liking the mechanics more. The campaign wasn't as good but the MP skirmishes had me hooked.

There's more sources of money now though.
Like, you couldn't collect a debri field in mission 3 before. You can now. Capital ships now leave giant chunks of dosh lying around. And I feel like you get a lot more money than you used to. I'm still strapped for cash but not to the point I was in hw1.

Yep, the game hates anything that does any fuckery with window overlays and the like. Broadcasting Software, GPU temperature monitoring, all of it will cause that bug.

EDIT - After seeing all the things that were changed for the HW1 Remaster (and even HW1 classic), I have decided to do what I should have done years ago: bought HW1. Will probably keep playing HW: Remastered on my Surface Pro and laptop since those don't have optical drives...but desktop will likely go back to playing the old disks.

It is not technically a game feature but you can pause the game and units will accept commands while paused. They wont acknowledge properly until you leave. Usually only one of them will give you a movement line and destination. But all of them will immediately go and do whatever you told them to do as soon as you unpause.
I don't abuse it every ten seconds, but I do use it whenever I feel the need. I'm not a big strategy gamer.
And jesus does it help with these games auto balancing.
Also because this game has some bugs still. You can't tell salvage corvettes to capture whole groups of ships, you have to tell them to go manually after each individual ship. This is a pain in the arse and a downgrade from hw1. So I just pause and give the orders.

They also removed the ability to regedit your way to widescreen resolutions.
That was me not checking things quite thoroughly enough, I WAS able to find that reg key and get it edited. It just took about thirty minutes of searching.

Reg key is located at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Sierra On-Line/Homeworld, not the usual HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Sierra On-Line/Homeworld
Yeah, I just searched my registry for Homeworld and got real comfortable with my F3 key.
EDIT - LOL...apparently it doesn't play friendly with multiple monitors. After making the regedit entries for widescreen, the game wants to be 75% on my second monitor and 25% on my primary. Seems like some shenanigans are going on here...

None of those are issues for me. But having the hw1 discs around for lan would be handy if I had anyone to play against, I can see that.
Otherwise HW1 classic should be fine for my purposes. I just want it to be available on steam.

Thievery Is a Go
Gardens of Kadesh spoiler.
Captured ships do count towards your build limit, unfortunately, BUT you can still salvage past the limit.

There was a couple Mods that translated HW1 races into HW2, including Kadeshi and Turanic, but no Cataclysm Mods I can remember.
They moved the registry key around. Still there after a bit of digging.
They still gutted the LAN multiplayer out of Homeworld 1 Classic though, which is like... what the fuck.
just leave it the fuck alone.
Balance, probably.
