I remember a year ago when I suggested Xenoblade chronicles be ported to 3DS and everyone was all "LAWL that'll never happen and would be dumb!" and then all uninvited me to their birthday parties.
Who's laughing now?!
I'm conflicted on the "Only runs on new 3DS" thing though. Is this going to cause a split in the market?

Damn it, Nintendo, I can't justify getting a new 3DS. I already passed my original to my girlfriend when I upgraded to the XL. Why is Nintendo being so awesome lately?
Man, I really hope that this doesn't make my 3DS XL totally outdated since I'm not willing to buy a new one just to get some more buttons.
I actually don't know how to feel about this. It seems like a purely "Competitive Smash 3DS" but if Xenoblade is exclusive to "new 3ds" then I can see a lot of more advanced actiongames only being compatible with this new model. And i don't like that

You're reinvited to my birthday party, but only if my present is the new 3DS

Oh it definitely will bite them in the ass - this is pretty awful. Consumers generally don't like market splits and that's exactly what it's going to do. This isn't some DSi deal where the only practical difference is the DSishovelWare over older models - they already had to make it a point to label all of their 3DS games as "hey mom it works on 2DS too, don't worry!", and now they're going to have 2DS, 3DS, 3DS XL and now this 3DS XL-B thrown into the market for mom to explain to their kid why <game> won't work on the 2DS they bought not too long ago. And all sitting on the same shelf - take that Best Buy floor salesman!
Fangoggles for Xenoblade not withstanding, I have no idea what Nintendo is thinking with this move. You know what, fuck making money on software sales, new market strategy! Full Capcom ahead on all handheld lines! 3DS XL Hyper Championship Edition with leather interior and six-dial A/C unit in six months!

I agree with this. Splitting the market between those who can afford ANOTHER 3DS and those who can't is a bit shitty. Especially since we have no idea how many of these new games will be released for it.

Holy shit, the Zelda 3DS XL is selling for a lot on ebay. Sounds like I won't lose any money at all when upgrading.
re: splitting the consumer base, it depends on how aggressive they are with it. I really can't imagine too many games requiring the N3DS (catchy acronym, right), so it won't be that big a deal.
If the alternative is no Xenoblade 3DS port, then I'm fine with it.

Yeah, I'm a 3DS ambassador and I have upgraded it once already, but I feel like this is too close to being a new console without really being it. If they want to split the market, then go all out and upgrade the graphics too.
I have Xenoblade for the Wii. The excitement of a new 3DS is wearing off already and now i'm a bit annoyed. My fiancee suggested we go halves and buy a new 3DS to share for any new games we want but i'm not even sure I want that.
Some people are saying "It's just like the game boy colour! There was a game boy and then a better version which certain games would only work on that" but it's different. The original game boy didn't have a million special promotional releases for different games, and wasn't aggresively pushed as THE console to have except LAWL not really this one looks the same but has more powerful insides.
The game boy colour added COLOUR. This has more power behind the scenes and an extra stick to say "fuck you if you don't buy it".
My childhood love of nintendo is fighting in my brain with my adulthood feeling of not wanting to be treated like a chump.

Actually the GBC added way more than color. This is a very similar sort of upgrade, even closer than DS -> DSi.
GB: 4.19 MHz processor, 8k RAM, 8k VRAM, serial communication port
GBC: 8 MHz processor, 32k RAM, 16k VRAM, infrared wireless port
Overall it was more than twice as powerful, and that power wasn't just the minimum necessary to add color. It could actually run much better games, and it did!
I'm just hoping the new one doesnt get any exclusives I gotta have. My wife and I have only had 3DSes about 10 months and we really don't play them THAT much.
Yeah, put me in the camp that finds Super 3DS only games to be icky. I'd almost ask them to stop bullshitting me and just market it as a completely new successor to the 3DS.
As far as Xenoblade... eh the news isn't doing that much to me to be honest. I have it for the Wii. And though my tune may change later, right now I don't have much of a desire to play it again. I remember the sheer number of sidequests and shit that game had. I... don't think I'm up for doing it again. And as much as the game really truly is great and deserves most of the praise it gets. it is not the Nirvana that people hold it to be. Like Bravely Default, it's got some warts.
Honestly speaking, and this dips more into opinion mode... I'd rather they not do any of this at all, and just make this game a Wii U port. If you're making a game and decide that you need to create a more powerful 3DS and take the risk of splitting the market base like this, then maybe your game isn't a fit for the 3DS in the first place. Plus... I can't imagine playing this on a handheld. I'm sure it'll look and play great, but god damn the environments were gorgeous. This shit deserves to be in 1080p on the big screen.
"The sausage of Green Earth explodes with flavor like the cannon of culinary delight."
Did they mention whether the new 3DS is gonna be region locked? Cause if it isn't, then holyshitfuckwhattheohboy.
They didn't mention it so I assume it will be.
[rant]Which is good, as I want to buy this but don't want to support such blatant anti-consumer practices as removing region locks. Yeah, you read that right. Seriously, folks, region free gaming's no substitute for proper localization and all you region lock abolitionist philistines are doing is drawing attention away from the real issues, fighting against the cause you pay lip service to, and making it that more likely that companies won't even bother bringing their games to our shores. You're our - and your own - worst enemy, and we don't need you making our pursuit of harder than it already is, thankyouverymuch.[/rant]
*Ahem*. So, how about that Xenoblade? Can't wait to spend another 100+ hours on that game.

But it's not "new generation" powerful. I want them to save the successor marketing for an actual successor, and I expect the successor to be a merging of the console side with handheld side. This is probably more justified a stopgap than ever, since they're not prepared to unify both platforms just yet.
They've done this with every handheld except the GBA. GBC, DSi, and now this. I don't necessarily like the splitting of the userbase but I don't think it will be a big deal. Devs won't make a lot of New 3DS exclusive games because of the small userbase. We'll still see tons of regular 3DS games. Remember, the DSi had like 5 exclusives and generally they weren't important games.

New/modified content would be enough for me to buy it.

I highly doubt they made the system for the game. It's probably the other way around, they were coming out with a new 3DS and wanted to have a big exclusive release to help sell it. It's not like having a new digital storefront with DSiware as a selling point, so they had to come up with an exclusive game release.
I'd be less annoyed at the prospect of any upgrades if Nintendo had an even remotely modern account system like...I don't know, both their competitors? How there is no account-level content ownership with Nintendo yet is utterly baffling to me.
