So the software is just looking to see if it's being run on a GBA for those bonuses yeah? How hard would it be to just force-toggle that setting to ON exactly? This is why I'm dismissive when people explain the shitty pacing of VC is due to how much work goes into it.

Yes, it's a toggle. Nintendo is just lazy. In some cases though, it does make use of GBA hardware features that their emulator might not be programmed for. I believe Shantae for example uses an expanded color palette. I'm pretty sure the Oracle games do not though - they literally just look to see if it's a GBA and "reward" you for upgrading I guess by unlocking a couple extra rings.

Really Nintendo just needs to let M2 handle all their VC stuff - they do a fantastic job always (see - Sega's 3D Classic releases and Wii U GBA VC, both of which offer a bunch of nit-picky options for purists like type of sprite smoothing, resolution options, etc. The Sega stuff takes it a step further and adds a bunch of extras like giving Sonic the spindash in Sonic 1, a "CRT television" filter mode, etc)

If you want Zelda on the go and you have a 3ds, play ALBW.

This was my opinion of Minish Cap. It's the only Zelda game I was glad to be done with, since everything seemed way more obtuse than it should have been.

Then do the fire temple first.

Ocarina of Time 3DS would also be a good choice.

I really liked Minish Cap. It had a nice pace to it and I don't remember getting stuck anyplace. Getting around to previously visited dungeons was a bit of a pain, but the whole affair felt very Zelda-y.

And it had kin stones! They were kind of disappointing to find and very satisfying to match. I'm not sure how I feel about them. I liked the added motivation to talk to everyone in town and the mechanical representation of relationships being built. Did any of the newer games riff on them?

  • King RiptorKing Riptor Registered User regular
Kin stones are a war crime.

There was no way to keep track of fusions you hadnt done yet. the drops were random and way to infrequent.

I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

That was the best example of how to remaster a game. Totally beats out the original. If you look at the side by side photos, you will see how they drastically improved the graphics.

They also hit a home run with ALBW. I was impressed with how well they folded the 3D graphics into it and used it to add to the gameplay. It is a sequel in the truest sense. It directly builds off the design of ALttP.

Also, I love to do this OoT:
Get the hammer from the fire temple and whack Shadow Link with it. It is the perfect counter to his bullshit.

Quick question for the thread -- are the L and R buttons for the XL as prone to giving out as the ones on the vanilla 3DS? I don't think I'll be able to resist the Smash model.

I haven't had any issues with mine. Then again, I never had any issues with my original 3DS either before I traded up in size.

It's got a few less games... IGN says 16 total. Unless they're not counting the ones that pop up in the later challenges?

Is it possible to automate daylight savings time changes? I worry about messing up time-sensitive games like New Leaf whenever I do it manually.

    YL9WnCY.png
  • Care Free BombCare Free Bomb Registered User regular
I don't know if there's any way to automate it but games just take your word for it that the system time is the real time. So long as you don't play a time-sensitive game in the hour you intend to roll back it won't have any idea that something happened, though New Leaf in particular won't even call you out on time of day changes, just date changes.

I believe New Leaf only cares about time changes if you go backward in time. So as long as you never "replay" a time you'll be okay (all your turnips will rot if you do.)

Yeah, but even then it only cares about the date, if you go back 1 hour or 23 hours as long as the date doesn't change it doesn't acknowledge it.

So I've cleared Story mode in EO: Millenium Girl, and I'm probably like 40% in to Etrian Odyssey 4. Sooner or later I'll finish it and get back to Fire Emblem.

Any suggestions for what to look into after that, besides my original DS backlog?

The Keep, which I posted about last page, is pretty good. My log says I spent 12 hours on it but for some of the time I was multitasking and writing down stuff from the game because I think I want to make a guide for it. It's probably a 6-9 hour game depending on how thorough you are and the difficulty you play (I played on normal).

It's nothing like the Etrian Odyssey games though, it's very much like Legend of Grimrock, which means sparse items that are significant upgrades, real time movement and battles, switch and lever puzzles, secrets behind sliding walls etc. You will want to dance around most enemies so they can't hit you and you can let your mana and stamina regen. Obviously that sort of gameplay isn't for everyone.

There are 10 chapters, but more than 10 floors. A lot of chapters have 2 significant floors and a lot of minor areas like pits you fall in which lead to stairs to climb back out. Unlike in Legend of Grimrock you only play as one character and there's no class choice, so there aren't a lot of options as far as who gets to equip what or how to build your guy. If you're thorough, you will end up wearing all the best available gear all the time, not much choice. You do get to pick between 3 weapon types which have different combo moves and stamina cost for using them, and magic is handled in an interesting way where you lay out runes on a grid strategically so that you can cast the most spells from them at once as possible. And you get to distribute some stat points at each level up to lean more toward physical combat or magic.

Graphics are pretty good for being a downloadable game and the audio is done very well, it's critical to be able to hear where enemies might be in relation to you, and there's a lot of creepy background noise.

Like I said I want to make a guide for it, I'm screenshotting all the maps and cataloging all the items and spells and such. I've 100%'d the game so if anyone has any questions I can help.
