Video LAN player not working (or any video player)

So, a few days ago VLC player stopped playing video for me. When I open a video file, any video file, the screen is black, and there's no audio. Then the file skips forward seven or eight seconds and there's audio, but no video. I've tried playing the same files in Windows media player, but I get the exact same problem.

I've tried reinstalling VLC, updating my video card drivers, and so on, but none of that has fixed the problem. Any ideas?

I have the same problem. I fix it by playing them in another player, then opening them in VLC. Or opening them in VLC from the file menu. Strange.

I just tried that, and it works for me as well, but it's awfully cumbersome fix. Anyone know of a proper solution?
