I buy my dress clothes at Kohl's because I make $10,000 a year

I do it because I'm cheap and don't care. Not that I have anything besides my one suit that people would call "dress" clothes anyway. Lots of khakis and polos, though.

Will Ferrell magically becomes involved in all sorts of things I like

but I find his personal acting style to be kind of obnoxious

maybe that's intentional to hide his true genius

or maybe he's just a comedian who I don't really like who happens to have really awesome taste in things

This is such an important fact of life, and I'd like to expand on it a bit.

Yesterday, my buddy and I were discussing hiring a stripper for his upcoming birthday.

And then I remarked ... why not have a stripper here every Saturday night?

And we couldn't come up with a good reason because we're adults dammit and we can do whatever we want.

Is there a reason we shouldn't have a weekly stripper appointment that I haven't considered, chat?

These are the big problems in my life.

It's a decidedly mid-range department store. Better than Wal-Mart, "worse" than Mall-level stores like Belk or JC Penney.

My mall has a Von Maur in it. That shit is hilarious. $300 for a fucking cardigan, come on.

    I don't know.

People seem to think that expressing stuff you like is some kind of sacred right, but that expressing stuff you don't like is petty and nasty.

Have some damn courage of your convictions. If you think anime is cool, fine. I might look down my elitist nose at you. If you can't live with that it honestly says more about you than me. (I'm actually OK with anime, its just not for me. But to use the example that's being tossed around). If you want to be an individual, be a fucking individual. Part of that is people disagreeing with you.

A short list of things I don't like: Homestuck, most JRPGs, regular (as opposed to diet) soda, first-person shooters based in real-world environments (eg, Call of Duty), the movie Memento, the current cultural trend of putting bacon on fucking everything, India Pale Ales, and getting up before 10am.

I will be adamant and harsh about some of the things. I think Memento is a steaming pile of shit that is only interesting because of the chronological gimmick.

But I try not to be insulting towards the people who like them. Maybe you like Memento's visual style. Maybe you like Guy Pearce. Maybe you just disagree with me that the story sucks.

I'm going to try to avoid being, "Ew! Memento fans!" or "Guy Pearce fans gross me out!" I don't always succeed, but I try. There's a difference between expressing disgust towards a thing versus expressing disgust towards a person (or class of people). I think it's okay to sometimes express disgust or hatred towards people, but I feel pretty strongly that we should reserve that sort of thing against the behaviors that really matter morally.

For some forms of art that line isn't so bright. Art that sexualizes children for instance - which puts some (not all!) anime in a weird spot. But Memento isn't cartoon child porn and neither is Call of Duty.

Sometimes I'll get really frustrated when it feels like the popularity of one thing overshadows the thing that I like. There were a few years where every damn FPS coming out was WWII-themed. Or when fans of something just get in my way, like when I used to work right next to a major ballpark. "Ugh, Giants fans! I just want to go home." But I try to recognize that karma comes full circle and there are times when I get to talk about Mass Effect for days or the concert I've lined up for is blocking traffic on the highway.

every person who doesn't like an acquired taste always seems to think everyone who likes it is faking it. it should be an official fallacy.

the "no true scotch man" fallacy.

man fuck people who express the things they like to others in public, the nerve
you're supposed to be a bitter emotionless bundle of conformity like me who derives nothing from day to day existence

    i definitely have this issue

i guess i want so strongly not to be typified or pigeonholed that i try and not really associate with anything: guns, jiu jitsu, running, video games, fashion

everything has its negative connotation and i don't want some theoretical funeral for me to be 'john chu: in total, a man who loved outkast, blowjobs, and sichuan food'

it is a p stifling, world-is-closing-in-on-me feeling, that i am reducible to certain things

so i guess i only really want to show off or advertise those interests of mine which are sort of sterile and mature and hard to use as ammunition for typification of my character

nobody I work with even knows I play video games and its like a huge part of my life, I'm afraid to even talk about movies because if I let on that I thought Frozen and Lego Movie are two of the best movies of the last year they might think I'm childish or a pedophile or something

so I just pretend to like the packers and alcoholism and other stuff adults in wisconsin are supposed to like

like i don't even wanna be the packers guy or the alcoholism guy

i guess in my ideal world i know a lot about everything, i can talk intelligently on a given topic

but i'm so stingy with my interest, focus, and passion that i'm not 'given' to any one thing and no one thinks of me as the ____ guy

no posters, no stickers, no fandom, no attending concerts, no going to sporting events

because i can't like a certain thing, i must be aloof for fear of social compartmentalization

    it is horrifying

    This is incredibly sad.

Life shouldn't be that. I've spent far too much time with people who were dying and regretted every moment of not being who they really were much of their lives, regretted conforming rather than living for me to think it's every okay to live out of fear of other people's judgement. In part because you're going to get judged, you just are, it's part of life...so, why not enjoy yourself along the way?

I get that there's some amount of conformity that comes down to being polite, and, as I've taught my kids, we're polite because it makes other people comfortable. And that there's some that could be argued to really be about morals (be excellent to each other). In my experience (which I have a lot of as an openly Christian - yeah just try and tell me I'm not inviting all kinds of shit by saying grace before eating when I'm at Whole Foods -, overweight, middle aged, woman who until last week had bright blue hair), being genuine only brings negativity from people who feel so trapped they can't stand that you're okay with who you are. And those instances are really pretty few and far between, plus they give one an opportunity to help the other person see it's really alright to be who they are. The vast majority of interactions end up having actual depth and bring about real connection even if it's two minutes in the grocery store line.

In short, I think John Green does a very good job, through the language of the nerd, of making my point:
"Nerds like us are allowed to be unironically enthusiastic about stuff.
Nerds are allowed to love stuff - like, jump-up-and-down-in-your-chair-can't-control-yourself love it.
When people call people nerds, mostly what they're saying is 'you like stuff,' which is not a good insult at all.
Like, 'you are too enthusiastic about the miracle of human consciousness.' "

There are currently too many of us living in too few houses, and unless one of us really ups our ambition / income, we're all quite comfortable with the circumstances.

I mean, are there a million better things to spend money on? Sure.

But should I worry about those things? That's the real question.

    it was a one-shot

about 8 years ago i took frankie up to salem for her birthday to see, like, all the witch stuff. she loves horror movies and, some associated ghostie morbid stuff.

and this russian woman had set up this little vintage-photography store where you could, like, dress up like a witch and have your picture taken

so i bought her some photos as kind of a little birthday present and then posed with her all dressed up like a witch in front of a cauldron and backdrop.

and then i took her on a "hunted salem tour" that night with some tour guide who was a larper with a lantern

i did all that stuff because i love my girlfriend, not so much because i like magic dress-up.

but then made the mistake i guess of posting the photos on like facebook maybe? or maybe they were in my photobucket? i dunno. maybe i even put one up on the forum. anyhow, dyna got hold of it.

i'm not really even embarrassed by it, but i guess it's kind of tiresome to explain it over and over.
