I keep going back and forth on whether to buy Betrayer now or wait for a few more impressions. It sounds tantalizingly atmospheric, but I'm less keen on the Dark Souls comparisons; nothing against Dark Souls, but I'm more in the mood for exploration than make-one-mistake-and-get-skullfucked combat.
Times like these I miss old-school survival horror. Seems like the genre as a whole made a turn towards action and never really looked back.
There is an option for easier combat and it appears to be a toggle. You can probably flip it in a game that's already in progress. I haven't found the combat too brutal so far. And stuff isn't instantly respawned when you res like in Dark Souls. So if you take your time and just pay attention chances are you won't get any nasty surprises on a corpse run.
Someone mentioned that melee is useless. It's not really the case. If you can strike an enemy unaware with a melee attack then it's an instakill. This is your only attack that doesn't use ammunition for one thing. Also you can make for some serious bursts of damage but you have to be ready for it. Your bow is your fastest shooting weapon but unless you are great at headshots with the bow, while on the move you can't purely rely on it. In my experience your really can't rely on any single weapon. You can carry two loaded muskets with your bow. If you've seen Last of the Mohicans you may see where I'm going with this. Use your muskets for troublesome targets, fire and then switch to your bow to finish them off if they are still standing. If they start to close on you nail them with the tomahawk. Whatever you do, don't reload your muskets or pistols in combat. Fire, switch to another weapon and go. Also you can lose enemies by breaking line of sight, so running is always an option.
It seems there are people complaining that this isn't another FEAR as far as combat goes, but I think that's a pretty ignorant complaint to make. The guys at Blackpowder are responsible for more games than FEAR for one thing. Also the AI guy for FEAR is a professor at MIT or something now. The AI isn't like FEAR's but it does what it needs to do and it does it effectively. The approach to combat is very thoughtful and if the player takes advantage of what is at their disposal they can engage groups of enemies with little trouble. This isn't a game for someone looking for a return to the pinnacle of corridor shooting though. If you enjoy STALKERy exploration and mystery I think you'll find a lot of love here. I've been sick unto death since the weekend so I haven't been able to devote nearly the attention that I want to give, but it has compelled me into a few sessions despite my feeble status. The way the games mechanics fit together feel really neat to me, and I expect this game to garner a solid following. It's not standard FPS fare at all, and while many seem to be knocking it for this, I'm pretty happy about it.
Aw hell, you said the magic S-word.

I actually somehow missed that it was the old Monolith team. That piques my interest substantially, even if it's still not the survival horror fix I was looking for. Think I'll check it out all the same. Thanks man!
Regarding the survival horror comment. While the game doesn't seem to go out of it's way to try and scare you what little I've played felt entirely creepy and unsafe at all times.
So I don't think I am doing this game right. The tutorial suggested you could crouch in the grass and they couldn't see you if you weren't moving. That does not seem to be the case. Also, the bow is supposed to be stealthy, but I can be out of LOS from everybody else, my target can be out of LOS from everybody else, I drop him with a bow shot, and everyone for like 3 miles suddenly knows exactly where I am. So that's rough. Also I have killed a couple of the armored knight dudes, but this next area has more than one along with several soldiers and since I apparently can't single guys out, I run out of damage and healing way to fast to be able to clear it out.
I'm not really sure if I am enjoying it, but I'm still double clicking on it, so that's a thing I guess. I think I just want a better idea of the rules.
That's the one - thanks! So many bundle sites out there now it's hard to remember them all.
We could always have the various sites listed in the first post, if all of them could be gathered. Say by folks posting the bundle site address and an @ to Iolo.

@Werewolf2000ad was kind enough to send me Pool Nation! I wishlisted it a couple SteamThreads back when people were talking it up as a really fun game, thanks so much! This is another one I can play in front of the kiddo, assuming there's no violent, bloody fights over the rules and such...

I'm going to be doing a new HTPC build when I get in my new apartment, and I'm thinking of using SteamOS on it. Is there an easy way to see which of my games would be supported, like a webapp that could check my library against what games Steam has on Linux?

I'm not sure if the desktop client itself will let you filter your library by that platform.
One option would be to use the Enhanced Steam extension through your browser and log into the store through that. Then go to the Linux compatible part of the store and the extension will highlight the games you own in a green background.

It amazes me that they haven't just added a "view Linux" tab into the library part if the desktop client yet considering how much they've been pushing Linux.

Yeah. Atmospherically that's great. Figuring out what was going on with the whole listening thing was neat, the vague story hints are cool.
Mechanically, I can't figure out why the same situation will sometimes result in everyone who can't see me magically knowing where I am and hunting me down, and sometimes result in a quiet one hit kill. Or why an enemy can look directly at me, walk away, walk back, look directly at me, walk away, start walking towards me, get pissed off and shoot me, without me touching the mouse or keyboard the entire time.
I can't figure out the rules if they aren't consistent. That's why I asked.
How trustable is that though? I know I've booted up and played Universe Sandbox a year or so ago for a good hour or two but it shows no playtime for me...
Probably a lot more actually considering I've idled some games for cards.
Exciting day - I bought the Crazy Machines bundle for the kid and we have a day home together tomorrow thanks to teacher workshops. I also bought the Extreme Sims 2 bundle for me so I'll be towing people's cars this weekend. I love mediocre obscure simulation games...almost as much as games that have farm animals.
If I already have Deus Ex: HR, is it worth getting the Director's Cut? What's the difference?
And what about Arkham Origins? Worth 10$? I still haven't played Arkham Asylum but I did enjoy Arkham City
Director's Cut has better bosses (as in, more approaches for people running non-lethal/stealth playthoughs), Missing Link placed were it's suppose to be in the story rather than being separate, and a NG+
Haven't played Origins myself, but I hear that while it isn't Arkham City good, it is still a very good "I'm the goddamn Batman" game.
I added it, @Kalnaur. I'm not sure it's actually any easier to get to the bundles thread from the OP than, say, bookmarking the bundles thread. But the prospect of someone actually reading the OP was so novel that I leapt into action before I really thought it through.
I read the OP when I first came to the thread.
Half of it was Greek to me at the time, but I still read it.
And I do check it from time to time to see if information in it has changed or become relevant to me.
So you're the one...
I was the first person in my class freshman year of college to finish DJ certification, get my license and get a radio show of my own. It was a 3-5am slot, but I loved it. To keep myself sane doing my little show in a remote town in the assend of morning with likely no listeners, I decided that there was one listener out there and addressed what little talking I did to him or her. Even by senior year when I had seniority and my pick of timeslots (8-10pm Tuesdays!), I maintained that dialogue with my lone listener.
In recent years as I have had occasion to take on OP responsibilities for various threads, it has been useful to imagine that lone listener/reader to maintain sanity in the face of regular questions in the thread that are clearly addressed in the OP. I'm sure more people read it than that, of course (maybe), but you can't take my mental fun from me.

Iolo, the moment that one listener manifests him/herself in your life, like when they appear at your breakfast table or in your car while you're driving on a lonely winter night, please do NOT listen to them when they tell you to kill people. Just sayin'.
I'm torn about Arkham Origins. This looks like the cheapest it's been anywhere and I'm tempted to pull the trigger. But I have SO MANY other AAA quality games that I have not even played yet that there is a good chance it will be even cheaper by the time I get around to it. I mean, I'm right in the middle of Mass Effect 1. I still have the 2 sequels, Tomb Raider, Last Remnant, Sleeping Dogs, the Alan Wake games, .... good lord the list is so long.
yeah Arkham Origins is within that sweet impulse range. Hoping Arkham Knights will be a nice return.
edit: return to form. As far as backlog goes, I have like 80-90 games on my desktop that serve as a backlog, and really I get to them when I'm interested in playing whichever game, and usually if I pick up a new game like Origins, or when I picked up Tomb Raider/Bioshock Infinite, I would pretty much be interested in it enough that I finish it pretty swiftly, within a couple weeks at least.
