It's kind of exciting to stay tuned to a thread that has pages and pages of people talking about how they can't wait to play/need to play Wildstar. It's so different from...the typical MMO thread.

This makes me curious as to how bad other threads might be. I really don't wish to venture in to the other side though.

You must not be following many MMO threads, because this pretty much IS typical.
First the hype, then the excitement, then the launch, and from there you get the confusion, followed by the anger, eventually it all decays into the bitter cynicism, and then it ends with the switch to a free-to-play model.
Note that during the excitement there's also guys who play in the beta, say "huh didn't seem that good to me" who get yelled at until they stop posting.
Don't worry, CripTonic. I remember what you said about TOR. I remember when you were validated.
I think Wildstar does a particularly good job of being up-front about what it is. It seems a little more clearly focused and specific than a lot of other pre-release MMOs, and I bet that does a good job of filtering out disappointed rage. This is a game that's actually not claiming to be revolutionizing the genre for once. You pretty much know what you're getting, and its either for you or its not.
That said, I actually am not even 100% sold yet, but I'm hoping this beta weekend does it for me. I'm actually not sure why exactly I find myself so distinctly wanting to fall in love with this game despite not being swept off my feet by last month's weekend. Hopeless romantic, I guess.
I wish this game wasn't so goddamn ugly. TERA, even Aion, are so much more advanced graphically that's it's really like stepping back a generation. The combat system seem solid and I guess people like the gameplay, but it looks a lot more like WoW than a 2014 MMO which was really kind of shocking to me. Has this been in development for 10 years or something? Why would they pick such a dated looking engine?

Well now that I am sure there shouldn't be anything stopping this from happening, a more noticeable final announcement;
PVP NITE WILD STYLE
When: 9PM EST (6PM PST) Where: Nexus server, Dominion side What: BG PVP in Walatiki Temple, Lvl 4-16 bracket
Basically, we will be doing group pvp queues on lowbies because it makes it easier for people to get involved. And also because starting noobs can be fun in beta.
Going to use the PA vent (the one in the sticky on the G&T forums). If you can at least get on to listen, that would be greeeeeat.
I plan on going kinda late. In my current state, 12 would be late, but I want to beat that. So if you think you might have trouble getting to 6 in time, or you aren't EST and won't be around till later, you can jump in. No worries.
I also plan on streaming but for the sole purpose of putting up some youtube vids. But don't be afraid, no one will judge you. If for some reason you AREN'T playing (come on, there were keys EVERYWHERE) and are online you can watch HERE.
I think I should be under the name Petranilla (mispelling of my other spellslingers name) for tell purposes. But I have yet to make this char so I dunno if I will get that name or not. I will post what my name is that night in case its different so you can contact me.
For those of you who want to get involved but worry you can't get to decent level in time, I offer these tips (not for those who don't like rushing);
You can complete the 1-3 tutorial in like 15-30 mins. If you want to prep, you can watch a video or two of the Dominion tutorial ship. Learn the quests ahead of time and fly through them tomorrow. After that, you should be on the instanced zone. You want to pump out those main quests asap for gear but also because you can't get to the main game till you finish the quest line. However, you should hit 6 in 30-45 mins of intense questing. After that, you can just pvp from there or if you have more time, try to prep up a little for more levels/better gear. However, you will level VERY QUICKLY in pvp at 6. But I still suggest at least pushing for 9, you get a better foundation of skills then.
If you wanna push further, continue to pump all the main quests out. However, at some point you will prolly loot a quest starting item - do this because it will lead to a solid blue weapon that will prolly serve you well until you would get a 15 pvp weapon anyway (which you will not be doing, it would put you in the T2 pvp queues). If you can finish that instanced zone you can hit up the main city. This is important because you can start buying pvp gear for prestige at level 10. And if somehow one of the amps you can get for prestige is actually good for your class you could pick up one of them (you can use a T2 amp at level 12).
I should note that if you get to level 12, 13 MAX you should stop - while pvp leveling slows down around then, you prolly wanna give yourself a good amount of room not to out level our bracket cause we might lose you. It might be inevitable for some of us though anyway.

I think too many people confuse graphics with aesthetic these days. Wildstar has normal mapping, a fully dynamic lighting engine, screen side ambient occlusion, and strong shader support. It has all of the bells and whistles that you would expect from a DX11 compatible game. MMOs will always look worse than contemporary single player games, and even the most beautiful KMMO will look like pure ass in just a few short years. MMOs being long term investments for both players and developers need to look good 10+ years on and honestly the only way to do that is a highly stylized design. Compare WoW and Lineage II for example. Both games came out in the same year, Lineage II was built using the then amazing Unreal 2 engine and WoW was built using the WC3 engine. Both games have had visual updates over the years, but updates aside WoW has clearly aged better, all because of the art style.
I scored a beta invite at PAX East, so I guess I'll be playing a little this weekend. We'll see if the fact that you have to self-root to autoattack as an Esper infuriates me as much with practice as it did on the show floor...
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.

Also, the game has been in development 7 years, or damn close to 10, and I think they made their engine from the ground up.
Just, y'know, sayin'

You get your mobile builder at level 11 now. And after multiple updates I think your initial builder is literally the only attack espers have left that makes them stand still anymore

Remember, Bolster + concentrated Blade = instant PP. No need for a builder every 8 seconds.

as opposed to looking like pure ass before it's released? I honestly don't care - I'm not trying to be contrary. As a potential customer and a fan of MMO games my first impression is that this looks like a 6-7 year old game, not a modern MMO. I think it was a mistake to go that route.

So if I do join up for some of this PVP action, does anyone have any kind of tips for early Engineer PVP? Spec/skill wise.
Then this game may not be for you then. Art is a purely subjective thing and arguing it has been done to the heat death of.certain celestial objects. If you like it cool, if not, also cool.

At those early levels, Engineer "In the zone" mechanics don't come into play really. A lot of your PvP DPS is going to come from pulse blast, electrocute as your main volatility dump, using energy auger and artillery bot barrage on cool down. Bioshell doesn't go instant cast until T4, two second cast otherwise which you wanna stay away from in a rumble.

Don't worry, CripTonic. I remember what you said about TOR. I remember when you were validated.
as someone who doesn't play MMORPGS or come to this to this part of PA that often? out of curiosity: what was said?

Considering me and someone else already are streaming (and I am sending most of it to youtube) join the club
BTW jelly of all you who will not be working today, and get to play very soon. I wont be home for more than 12 hours from now
I'd suggest those of you at home try and log in right now.
the devs pushed another update through and it looked sizable enough to make not playing a 700a irksome.
I'm with you Kai, I had a job bid way under what it contained yesterday... So here I am today trying to get it done early...
Did they ever add a way to manually switch instances? I know the game has multiple instances like Tera/SWTOR etc, but never found a way to move from fucking-overcrowded instance 1 to maybe-it's-better instance 2 short of joining a team with someone in instance 2.

only the lowbie area is super instanced that way I think. I think it has a max of 50-60 players before it shards off into another instance. The only manual command I remember was if you and a friend ended up in different instances of the same area then you'd group up and whoever wasn't group leader would type /pgoto
