Honestly, I never ran into problems with losing humanity. Up to a certain (optional!) boss I ran around with like 20+ effigies. I burned through all of them at that boss, which I pretty much knew was a really dumb thing to do but I gambled on being able to summon someone to help me. Before and after that I never came even close to having no effigies.
And yet I died quite frequently. Thing is you don't NEED effigies to beat pretty much anything you're having trouble with. 20% more health isn't a stopper. Especially not in a Souls Game where your primary defense is either rolling (which negats all damage if timed correctly) or blocking (and there's 100% resist shields for any situation).
I don't understand why the hollowing mechanic is blown out of proportions so often.
Old habits from other RPG's is my guess. People don't really think to themselves "50/25% less health really doesn't matter, because this is a one-touch-death game most of the time anyway!".
Also, perhaps people didn't play Demon Souls, so they aren't aware this mechanic existed before. If all you ever played was DaS1 you'd wonder what in the christ this was all about.
You can get a nice permanant burnt human effigy if you just go offline. =P If you want to have multiplayer that helps you, then you have to risk multiplayer that hurts you.
See I thought that was just certain covenants/areas, what an incredibly stupid idea that can plummet you into a hole of failure. You can't summon as undead can you, so you can't call for help and you're at a distinct health disadvantage.
I do alright in a fair fight but I'm getting more and more gods running around and rolling in full armor with 2-handers...I can't win against that, especially in areas where they can activate more enemies/traps.
As I've leveled I've gotten less and less reason to stay online, I don't get summoned to help anymore...I can't find anyone to call for help but I'm still getting invading.
This is crazy hyperbole. Getting killed in an invasion is not going to put you into a hole of failure. You can do co-op to get your humanity back without using an effigy, and if you're wearing the ring of binding the max health decrease is not even a big deal.
Also, unless you're getting invaded by someone who is cheating, then it is a fair fight. For good or ill, the people you're matchmade against have similar soul memory as you. Maybe they have a stronger build than you, but they're not statistically super powered compared to you. If you're talking about getting pulled in to rat covenant worlds, you are the phantom there, so it's no cost to you if you die so there's just no reason to be worried about it. Being summoned there is literally no risk all reward for you. You either get a pharros lockstone for making it to the fog or beating the invader, and you lose nothing at all if you die.
I feel some bits are being missed here. It'd be really nice If I could move like I'm in light armor while wearing and swinging around a maxxed out glowing 2-hander and heavy armor.
You and I have very different ideas of fair. I don't even see summoning icons where I'm fighting and am invaded long before anyone else summons me...hence a spiral of failure. The system clearly isn't working in a balanced fashion. I went ahead and went offline though I was already arbitrarily cutoff from co-op so there was nothing but the most annoying and smallest part of the game as a whole left to entice me online.

You can't do those things because you aren't built for it. They aren't covered in some secret sauce, they've used a soul vessel and specced themselves that way. They are also within the same Soul memory range as you, or they wouldn't be invading. At most they have 10% statistical advantage on you (as the invasion range is ~+/- 10% statistics either way). You could just as easily soul vessel and build exactly the same way and turn the tables on them.
e: And there are PvE focused builds that wreck in PvP. I'm a pure glass cannon Sorc/Hex caster, and I regularly beat these heavy armor super roll two handed fuckers because I can just output so much damage, so fast, they generally aren't ready for it. Dark Fog + Soul Spear is a great way to give them pause and make them realize you aren't just dead weight.
Dude! I completely missed that door. Also, I just found Majula has another exit leading to some spooky mist woods. I had no idea. Iron Keep got done offline though.

I'm not sure what you're advising here. Most PvE builds are complete ass against invaders. Invaders come in with focused builds designed to kill players who PvE. That's the point of invading: fighting someone who isn't as prepared or willing as you when they aren't ready or in a situation to fight back effectively. If invaders were serious about PvP, they'd be dueling their peers...not engaging in an activity which nets them no reward apart from the satisfaction of hampering someone else's gameplay.

Early on I managed to die like... a lot on some regular enemies. Many many times losing all the souls gathered. It's probably getting close to them not spawning anymore. Should I just... start over? Because it's probably been like 4-5 levels worth of souls that are gone forever. And I know later I will make those back but it's still some helpful stats that I just won't have for the early game...
Ugg, why is the Brotherhood of Blood Arena so dead? You would think you could get constant matches as it is the only reliable way to farm cracked red eye orbs.
Ugg, why is the Brotherhood of Blood Arena so dead? You would think you could get constant matches as it is the only reliable way to farm cracked red eye orbs.
What are you playing on? It seems to be very much alive on PS3.
I have a feeling the PC crowd is going to take some more time to get a good bloodbro dueling community going. On PS3 you get duels instantly. But on PC people are still making their way through the game. Not everybody is already going to be SL150 and have their PvP build ready on PC, especially those that are first time players and not double-dippers.
Also, if this is anything like Dark Souls 1 the PC version may only sell ~10% of the total sales of the game, so the community is just plain smaller.
Another point about PvP: You lose in exactly all the ways you don't normally lose in dark souls. That's ass.
Shitty hit detection? Dark Souls would rarely ever burden you with that... but if you're online and lag is happening, you bet your ass you can circle strafe somebody while targeting them with a greatshield up, and somehow still get hit as if you stopped blocking, or randomly do the same to your opponent.
Tells on attacks that basically always allow you to avoid them? Who needs those, you're going to take damage and then see the hit, or start your second swing and then see if your first stunned.
Consistent hitstun? Nope! Whether you can swing once, twice, three times, or until your stamina runs out while attacking your enemy is seemingly random! And the previous issue means you don't even know if they rolled until your first missed swing!
Instakills? Occasionally present, in obvious danger. But here? You have to assume the merest touch of a sword, and every single spell you have zero way of having seen before, will kill you!
Yes, a lot of this is, essentially, whining about lag. Except I'm on a 10 MB/s internet connection that averages 20-40 ping on other steam games, so it isn't even my lag that's being problematic. I love dark souls, but everything about it's PvP is and seems forever likely to be ass.
On the PS3, I have gotten more positive/neutral/friendly PSN messages after Invasions and Duels than hatemail. It's actually kinda nice.
I remember getting oh so much hatemail on the PC version of DS1.

PC. My level/soul memory is below the standard 150 or whatever, but I would think people would want to invade as they are going through the game. Maybe I'm too low? What level/memory is average for getting into the Brotherhood of Blood?

I'm advising he should tone down the hyperbole. Invasion is not that common of an occurrence outside the PvP areas, and the hyperbole about "spirals of failure" and "completely unfair, broken, unbalanced system" are untrue.

My thing with PvP in Souls games is while I don't usually seek it out and do a lot of invasions myself, and while I don't consider the PvP mechanics good enough to play the game specifically for PvP the way some do, I think being invaded is fun as shit.
There's really nothing dangerous about PvE in Dark Souls, especially once you've been through an area once. So fighting enemies that aren't predictable and are trying to hunt you down is just a fun thrill for me, win or lose. I don't get worked up about losing my humanity if I die or whatever. You can co-op or use an effigy if you need to. Or just kill the invader. =P
Yeah, that's why I'm only really bothered about the constant invasion areas. The ocassional invasion is fun, even if I lose 90% of them, because it's a five minute break from the way the game normally works and then win or lose it's back to business. It's a sort of interlude. Getting constantly 2-on-1'd and not being able to get through is less so, though.
I guess you're talking about the bell towers? Just skip them if you're not keen on it. And if you're just trying to get the skeptics/simpleton's spices, or the bastille key or whatever, just go offline if you really feel like it.
I agree bell keeper PvP is pretty trash though anyway. Most of the people who stay in bell keepers are either just trying to farm chunks or they're the kind of people who do it only because they know most of the time they'll get to 2v1 you.
So people get Titanite chunks for it? It does make it harder to be annoyed at them. I guess when I hit maximum hollow I can go to Luna and spend some time dying to people so they get chunks.
Also honestly screw the Doors of Pharros. There is nothing to indicate what lockstone doors do anything and which don't, and my lockstone supply is super limited.
The PvP in there is way more fun than the belfrys though. Yeah, it's really hard to win, but it's a lot more interesting than 2-on-1 simple beatdown. Being summoned every two minutes plays havoc on my durabilities though.

You will know when you get there. Within seconds of going through an arch, the fog will close behind you and you will get invaded by a gray spirit, followed by a second within 15 seconds. If you manage to kill them, you will have a short break before it happens again.... or if it's a Rat pvp area, you will leave your game and invade the Brodent's world.
So, random thoughts with my weekend experiance with DS
Holy shit do you start off weaker then in Dark Souls 1. In Dark Souls, I was pretty comfortable making theme builds with minimumish vitality and endurance, and instead pumping my stats to use different weapons/builds.
Dark Souls 2 is having NONE OF THAT SHIT. Start off as a Warrior? Grats you have some pretty nice starting stats to equip different things! But WHOOPS, KINDA ignored Endurance/ADAPTABILITY, THE MOST IMPORTANT STAT IN THE GAME.
Oh, and by the way, there are no 100% physblock shields FOR A WHILE. And they all have SHIT stability. And your rolls are SHIT GARBAGE USELESS.
So you can't block much, and you can't roll anything. And poise is useless...But...uh...grats on being able to equip some of the pre-order stuff?
Did we mention you only get 1 Estus flask and limited consumable health items to start?
I am the master of alts, so it took awhile(pretty much a day) to figure out anything that wasn't Cleric(olol Heal crutch)/Swordsman/Knight was going to be an INFURIATING early experiance. Warrior is the trap. Knight is the light, giving you decent health, bare minimum acceptable endurance, and actually functional Adaptablility.
SPEAKING OF STATS.
Adaptability. I can't believe I loathe a stat so much, and love it at the same time. For one, it creates BUILD PROBLEMS. MASSIVE early on build problems. You have 3 stats that are fairly necessary.
ENDURANCE
Vitality
Vigor
Endurance lets you do things. Pretty important. But since they split DS1 Endurance into Endurance and Vitality, you will need a minimum amount of Vitality to make sure you can at least Medium roll in heavy armor. Vigor, of course, is straight health. Which could be ignored, except that with the lack of healing items/limited estus early on, having more than minimum health is VERY good, especially with the hollowing penalties. However, ALL of these hilariously important stats, are dwarfed in comparison, to
ADAPTABILITY.
It's so much better than three HILARIOUSLY NECESSARY STATS, it borderlines on DUMB FUCKING SHIT. Would you like to roll out of the way of an attack? ADAPTABILITY. Would you like to raise your shield in an appropriate amount of time? ADAPTABILITY. Would you like to MOVE, AT AN ACCEPTABLE SPEED? ADAPTAFUCKINGBILITY.
When you put an excessive amount of points into it? It's God. Plain and simple. It's better than anything. You can be naked with a highly upgraded single weapon Vs. someone who made the most ridiculous overpowered Saniter's spear build of all time. If they had 3 adaptability vs. your 40? You could literally walk all over them.
PvE? More I-frames and roll range then God ever intended man to ever have. Without it? Good luck BLOCKING THINGS.
All of this, and I haven't even gotten to, you know, your MAIN, PRIMARY STATS THAT ALLOW YOU TO EQUIP DIFFERENT WEAPONS AND ARMOR.
They are BAD in comparison to Adaptability/Endurance/Vitality/Vigor. BAD. The ability to wear different things, and equip different classes of weapons are BAD, TERRIBLE, in comparison. That's a LITTLE bit of a problem.
Now I know this was a concious descision From made, and I know it becomes less of a problem when you get aclimated to the game.
Now I know all of that sounds like I hate the game, but it's still hilariously good, which speaks volumes. And I haven't even gotten to complaining about the enemy design.
I'm going to reiterate how important the Ring of Binding is, and that it should be on your list of "things to do first on a character". Especially since the path to get to it is incredibly good practice for several mechanics, and worth a huge chunk of souls early game.
If you're having trouble with the three pull, see spoiler for hint.
Burn down the two handed guy then run back to the start of the area. The two shield guys will stop perusing and turn back, at which point you can single pull them.
I beat the game on my first play-through without ever even knowing about its existence.
Dude! I completely missed that door. Also, I just found Majula has another exit leading to some spooky mist woods. I had no idea. Iron Keep got done offline though.

Apparently the undead crypt and forest of giants are pvp areas, maybe it's not that common at your soul memory because it certainly is in mine. When I'm still getting invaded but can't be summoned or summon anyone else I'd say the system isn't working. I'd rather take part in most of the game and miss the ganking part of it.
I never understood what it is with the (mostly PC) portion of the fanbase that dislikes PvP in souls games.
There are going to be a lot of things that account for it but you touched on a big one. The demographics and gaming history of people that prefer gaming on PC versus consoles is going to differ. People that have gaming PCs are more going to skew at least a bit older and gaming background is going to be different. Those are both going to change how people react to different elements of the game. As an example, there is a long history of multiplayer real time RPGs both MMO and not on PC and the separation of PvE and PvP content unless the player deliberately chooses a PvP server is pretty codified. A more extreme example would be how console and PC players approach Elder Scrolls games. The latter are less likely to understand why someone would want to play the game without the ability to mod it.

Based on the bloodstains I've been investigating, a lot of people don't block or roll when in a tight spot.
More seriously though, a 20%ish reduction may not be much but 50% can be when you're still new to the game and haven't found the ring of binding.
But really, the big reason we don't like hollowing is that it interferes with our ability to look pretty and dapper while adventuring.

The Luna and Sol Belfry, Grave of Saints, and Doors of Pharros. The last two actually case you as the invader. The Luna Belfry is the first of these you're likely to see (though it requires a lockstone to reach) and actually has what I think is a fun boss fight so it's worth doing even if you have to go offline for your sanity.
Broken record mode: The de-ranking/losing counting against you in the BoB arena is still ass. I know I said I don't mind losing anymore and that's still true; the only thing that makes me sad is that I lose a point when I lose a match. And all that does is make me wanna really switch to Dragon/Rat/Bell covenant so I can PVP more freely. This also means that I don't experiment in Arena PVP.

On a related note, dual daggers as the worst pvp spec?
I'm SL136... other than when I went to the bellbro tower I haven't been invaded a single time yet.
Its very odd. I co-op all the time, so its not a connection thing.
Is invading area specific maybe? Like will the invader goto a persons world in the same area he invaded from? Because that might explain some of why I don't see anyone... I've done the game is a totally wrong order. Apparently I went and did the hardest areas first, or parts of one area and then I got side tracked to another area since I still unlocked different shit. I know this because I looked at the "normal" order you are supposed to do shit in and what I did was totally wrong. But that might mean I'm an uncommon soul memory for different areas and there is no one to match me with.... but I still co-op fine, so I dunno.
I like the random invasion now and then, its just fun no matter how it turns out. I even have the force miracle attuned, because I want to get invaded near some cliffs and push them off.... but not a single invade in 20+ hours...
edit: Oh, I don't play as hallow much either. I'm constantly doing bosses in co-op to get sunbro tokens, so I'm human form most the time.
It's funny to me that EpicNameBro has taken to calling increasing his adaptability as "Getting my placebo frames." Basically he's not even sure if you get i-frames for increasing adaptability, and if you do, how many it is and if it even makes a difference. But everybody has just taken it as fact that it happens, so everybody gets agility. And he worked on the official guide to the game and worked firsthand with From on parts of it. You'd think they might've told the people making the official guide what the stats do, but apparently not.
It reminded me of last week when I was watching one of the guys who streams PvP on twitch. He was invading a guy who just kept dodging him and knocking him down with a greatbow. This guy must've dodged him perfectly like 25 times in a row. So he's like "fuck this guy must have so much agility," and he messages the guy and asks what his ADP is. The guy is tells him and it's like 8 or 10 or some shit. And he's like damn, he must have sky high attunement and get his agility from that. So he asks and the guy tells him he has like 6 attunement.
The long and short of it is adaptability really doesn't do as much as people think. I beat NG, and NG+ on my Paladin with a medium roll and not even that much agility. The only agility I got was from my attunement, and it wasn't that much.
Then I played a light weight dual wielder and pumped ADP to the moon and had 110 agility, and you know what? Dodging enemy attacks feels exactly the same on both. The only thing that makes dodging feel better to me is lower equip load which just makes you roll further. That has a real and legit effect because there are attacks that you can dodge and get out of the way of that with ~69% you would clear initially but then still be in range to get hit by the back end.

For bloodbros, they invade in the zone they use their cracked orb in, so you may have avoided them by doing areas in different orders and having your soul memory be out of whack for the places you were in, sure. For blue sentinels, they used their cracked orb and invade sinners anywhere no matter where it's used from. But you wouldnt' be seeing them unless you had been doing invasions yourself or killed a bunch of npcs, etc.

Also, anyone know what the best boss to far sun tokens is? And if the 30 token reward is worth it?
I've been pumping ADP to 100 agility on my recent characters. The rolls feel better, but I'll be goddamned if it's just placebo in truth.
Sev: Your gameplay is the most heavily yomi based around. Usually you look for characters that allow you to force guessing situations for big dmg. Even if the guess is mathematically nowhere near in your favor lol. You're happiest when you have either a 50/50, 33/33/33 or even a 75/25 situation to go crazy with. And you will take big risks to force those situations to come up.

Whichever boss you can kill fast and get summoned frequently for, really. I did a lot of guardian dragon to finish mine but just because that's where I was in the game when I realized I needed to hammer out my last 12 medals or whatever. As for Sunlight Spear, it's definitely worth it if you use FTH. It's Great Lightning Spear on steroids.

On PS3 I get invaded a decent amount in NG. If PS3, you're going to have to wait till more people get comfortable with the game and people start making Bloods.
Also, you will get invaded constantly in NG+. Doubly so if you're a Sinner as you'll get both Red and Blue invaders.

Adaptability and agility are definitely not bad. They most certainly have effects. The question is if one of those effects is really increased i-frames, and if so, is it really meaningful enough to spend the points, ignoring the benefits we know exist for sure such as faster estus, recovery speed, etc.
Watching this video you can see how drinking estus is faster, and also the recovery time after he punches.
And here's one that's supposed to be showing increased i-frames, but he just gets hit in all 5 anyway so I think maybe he's trying to show that you recover faster from the hits with higher agility.

My ADP is 3. My ATN is now back down to 2. It was briefly 10.

I slaughter about 80-90% of the PvP foes I've come across. Therefore, ADP is unimportant to me. I'm not saying it is ineffective or doesn't work or anything, but I do fine without it so I frankly don't care about it at all.
I got invaded by the first bell of awakening in my NG+ game. Hard fight, but I actually won! The other guy kept shooting various weird lasers at me, that I would block. Then I hit him with my sword. Then I hit him again. Then I had to run away and heal. Then I hit him with my sword.
Agree with this, but
you don't actually have to fight those three guys.
Run past everyone, up to the mosaic floor, then quit and reload. The enemies' positions don't reset, but they forget that they were chasing you, and now cannot see you.
Re: invasion
This is part of the game, but in the other games, I didn't have to be offline to opt out. Also, why should I burn one of my limited number of effigies when I can play offline and not need to? So far I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not seeing all the useless and rude messages.

If you're going pure Poise/Defense/HP Tank and don't focus on rolling, Agility isn't as important to your build.
You can make builds that don't need it. It's just important if you want to dodge things.
the drangleic shield after the pursuer, who was the second boss i fought
i just got invaded while i was alt-tabbed. they saw i was afk and started spamming the 'hello' voice bomb until i came back so we could have an honourable duel. wat a gent
Starting as a Bandit, I put literally zero points in Endurance/Vitality/Vigor until I had 20 Strength, 14 Dexterity, 13 Attunement, and 22 Faith, and at no point did I feel particularly disadvantaged by the decision. I mean, okay, getting those points in Endurance was kind of a relief and opened up new combos, but I could have gotten it way earlier if I wasn't bootstrapping miracles, so that's still not a big deal. With Vitality I was more excited about having more options for Fashion Souls than the actual defense gains. Starting with an Adaptability of three really does kind of fuck up the early game, though. I gave up at rolling entirely until it was around 14 or so and my Agility hit the low-to-mid-90s. I was stuck relying on shielded circle-strafes on everything like a chump.
I'm going to reiterate how important the Ring of Binding is, and that it should be on your list of "things to do first on a character". Especially since the path to get to it is incredibly good practice for several mechanics, and worth a huge chunk of souls early game.

I went ahead and went offline though I was already arbitrarily cutoff from co-op so there was nothing but the most annoying and smallest part of the game as a whole left to entice me online.
e: And there are PvE focused builds that wreck in PvP.

What are you playing on? It seems to be very much alive on PS3.

Also, if this is anything like Dark Souls 1 the PC version may only sell ~10% of the total sales of the game, so the community is just plain smaller.

Or just go offline and miss part of the fun of a Souls game, which is the collective community experience.
Which areas are PvP areas? I'd like to know which of my PvE areas have been claimed by the terrorists so I can avoid actually pursuing PvE content there while connected to the fun community experience.

I beat the game on my first play-through without ever even knowing about its existence.

Ah, that makes sense. And ya I have no sin yet.
Also, anyone know what the best boss to far sun tokens is? And if the 30 token reward is worth it?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I'm still upset that I...
2) Let Lucatiel die at Last Sinner.
3) Did not let the scorpion boss destroy that tree.
Anyone remember what item was up in that tree?
I've been pumping ADP to 100 agility on my recent characters. The rolls feel better, but I'll be goddamned if it's just placebo in truth.

Here's one showing estus and lifegems
And here's one that's supposed to be showing increased i-frames, but he just gets hit in all 5 anyway so I think maybe he's trying to show that you recover faster from the hits with higher agility.
My ADP is 3. My ATN is now back down to 2. It was briefly 10.
30 STR, 25 DEX, 32 VIT, 16 VGR, 10 END
Right Hand: Lightning Bastard Sword +10
Left Hand: Bastard Sword +10
Full Smelter Demon Set
I slaughter about 80-90% of the PvP foes I've come across. Therefore, ADP is unimportant to me. I'm not saying it is ineffective or doesn't work or anything, but I do fine without it so I frankly don't care about it at all.
And he died from it.
So far I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not seeing all the useless and rude messages.
also
If you're going pure Poise/Defense/HP Tank and don't focus on rolling, Agility isn't as important to your build.
You can make builds that don't need it. It's just important if you want to dodge things.

i just got invaded while i was alt-tabbed. they saw i was afk and started spamming the 'hello' voice bomb until i came back so we could have an honourable duel. wat a gent
But how will you know to "try but hole" and all variations of it whenever a female npc is present?
And how will you know that every single wall is an illusionary wall?
