It's less effective than you'd think, the deathsplosion doesn't really make up for the reduced max health.
It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

So I just picked this up the other day and I think I suck. What are some good pointers and strategies for a rookie who's currently just playing the base game?
Currently Playing:
The Division, Warframe (XB1)
GT: Tanith 6227

Don't use autofire. Wait for all your weapons to charge and then hit in a volley.
Explore each sector as much as possible before going to the next.
Auto-fire is a trick. Wait for all your lasers to charge, and fire them in one burst so you have a better chance of dropping the enemy's shields and striking their hull.
Cloaking is important for the final boss. Try to get that.
Scour each sector for stuff. You'd think you want to get to sector eight as fast as possible, but that just leaves you under-equipped.
Long Range Scanners + Scrap Retrieval Arm = all the scrap.

Play on easy and die a great many times.
Other important things in no particular order
Upgrade your doors
Upgrade your shield to 2 fairly quickly
Rockmen and Engi crewmembers seem to get the most 'blue text' options (better results from events). If you have a choice between blue and normal text, always go with blue.
The final boss is REALLY HARD.
Alien spiders are no joke.
In my opinion, many of the rank 2 weapons are more effective than the rank 3 versions. They tend to be quicker firing and use less power.
The scrap recovery arm is civilization
Autofire is the enemy of civilization. Volleys are much more effective.
Space is pause. Use it. ALL THE TIME.

It takes a while for the game to "click"..once you get a handle on how the game works your success rate will go from abysmal to bad.
so I'm down to the slug b to finish unlocking all the c classes. this ship...wow. I mean, engi b was terrible too but it didn't feel as wrong as playing this ship does. I guess I'm willing to play with a single engi before trying to make two slugs - and a heal bomb that has to charge up for at least one enemy ship barrage worth of time before I can safely board - work as a teleporter ship.
I started up two runs with this ship and neither of them got past the second sector. I have something like a 1 in 3 win rate these days with decent and up ship types, so...is there some kind of trick I'm missing or is it that bad.
Yay! I finally unlocked the mantis cruiser!
*starts game with mantis cruiser A*
WTF IS THIS SHIT
Soon... soon I will install you, my precious.

At first I wasn't too keen on the cloning bay as I much prefer having all my crew at full health all the time but I've grudgingly come to accept it's usefulness.
Getting boarded by 4 mantis was too much of a match for my puny crew but luckily there was another way out
Still, one mass suicide later and everything is all good again. Yes I don't know why i haven't upgraded my doors yet.
In other news... YES IT CAN ACTUALLY HAPPEN.
Though I never would have tried it without a clone bay.
Breezed through stage 1 and 2. Stage 3 I got a boarding drone to the cockpit, then missile spammed. Actually, no, that was Stage 2. I'm really not sure what went wrong here.

Damn.
It looks like what went wrong was not having enough dodge from your engines to not get your shit wrecked by the power surges.

Perhaps. I usually have Cloak at this point, but skipped it for more guns.
I think I just got unlucky with some missile hits.

Even having maxed engines, the surge has enough shots that you're likely to get some hits through your shield. 3 bars of engine is a recipe for hurt without a cloak.

With 45% in dodge, that's usually enough to be safe from the surge if you've got 3 or 4 shields. Sometimes you might take a hit or two though, but that's just the luck of the rng.
And then hopefully those hits don't take out your critical systems.

Was it the super shield?
Looks like you're relying on teleportation for your own defense. And you can't teleport through the super shield without a special upgrade.
That, combined with the low dodge rate means you probably ate some missiles earlier...
Yeah, I had pre-igniter combined with a Burst Laser 3, Crystal Burst 1, Crystal Heavy 1, and Small Bomb. That was enough to cripple shields right off the bat, so the second volley went into piloting and weapons. The super shield let him tank me for long enough that the lack of avoidance became a major issue.
Ah well, next time. I only have 76 hours logged, barely scratched the surface.
I use the Rock B when I want to pretend to be a Space Marine from 40K/Space Hulk. "Let the purifying flame cleanse this area." You always know that the Emperor is smiling upon you when you find a Teleporter.

I have literally never used cloaking to beat the final boss!
But, I always rely on a high-evasion strategy with 3 bars of shields. So I guess the corollary would be "evasion is important for the final boss." You're going to need to mitigate SOME of the shots the boss fires, either by having multiple defense drones, high evasion+skilled pilot+skilled engineer, or cloaking.
Got a teleporter and boarding crew for the first time ever. Slug nebulae were actually fun to be in. Slugs don't stand a chance against a rock/mantis duo.
I think beating the spiders depends on having a large enough crew.
Nope.
It is, to the best of my understanding, a 50/50 chance of losing crew or getting a lot of scrap. Given that you'd have to get 50+ scrap to replace a rookie crewman, and you can easily lose an experiencing one to that event, I can't really see a reason to do it unless you have a blue option available.
Just had a victory with Mantis A that gave me a newfound respect for Hacking. It was my go to method for disabling medbays during my quest to board every ship I encountered, and it saved me twice against the Flagship. During round 2 I distracted the defense drone with a missile so I could attach it to the Shields, letting me plink away with my Burst Laser I, the only non missile/bomb weapon I had. Then in round 3, after I finally wore down the Zoltan Shield, it turned the Flagship's normally deadly Mind Control into a harmless annoyance.
MVP is still the Zoltan Shield Bypass I picked up in sector 7, though.

Wow, you're brave to enter the last fight with anything other than 48% evasion, 4 shields and a Defense I drone.
Or maybe I just overprepare...
Anyway I finally have a mantis ship and I'm excited to try a boarding party for the first time.
Never jump with someone in the med bay.
Never.
Because if the enemy ship has a hacking device, there's a chance it'll latch on to your med bay.
What happens if a hacking device latches on to a med bay?
They lock the doors.
Then they extract your health.
Until you die.
~_~
Zoltan explode on death
Clone bay replicates Zoltan
I see a strategy here

Mantis ship is pretty fun and then you run into zoltan shields or AI ships and have no actual weapon and you're fucked.
Penny Arcade Rockstar Social Club / This is why I despise cyclists
You start with a laser that fires a single 1 damage shot every 11 seconds. You can't even penetrate one layer of shields.

Clone bay to the rescue!
Also vulcan lasers are Civilization, once you've got enough resources to keep them online and supported through conventional weapons.

(Blue) Ram the bastards!
First store I get to is in sector 2
It has a Glaive Beam and a Burst Laser III for sale
I have 122 salvage. If I strip my ship to the bones I'd have 181. I need 190.
