How does it work with an existing account that has characters on it but isn't currently subbed?
edit: I ask because I like the game's ambiance and just sitting around and mining shit while listening to the music and shooting the breeze in chat, but I'm too lazy to do even the barest amount of real work to pay for plex, nor do I like the pvp. I would like to keep my current character though, just because

There is no such thing as unsubscribed any more. You're limited to alpha skills (and thus ships and modules), but you'll still have all your isk and assets.

So really what you're saying is... we all lost EVE.

Which skills are considered "alpha" skills? Is there a list?
edit: fuck it, jumped back in. Holy shit this game has changed in the three years I've been gone. I'm guessing it's been three years anyway, that's when I was kicked from MerchI

Ed: Hahaha, I couldn't refund my five bucks.
Okay, CCP, I'll see it. I heard this went F2P so I bought the starter pack. Who is MERCHI attached to nowadays?

I tried Eve for a little while. It's uh... weird. I'm pretty down for space sci-fi in general, so I might piddle with it here or there. Is there an up to date youtube tutorial series or anything like that?

Well a good place to start is the in game tutorial. CCP put a lot of work into upgrading it for this expansion. Back in the day the tutorial was pretty much "Here's a ship, click in space to move, now go fuck yourself. PS you're being shot at: think fast, asshole."
Now it's really impressive.
Youtube is rammed with EVE-related videos, but the game has, Darmak correctly observes, changed a whole fucking bunch. Anything over 3 years old should be considered completely obselete. (Anything relating to mining that's over a week old should be considered highly suspect.)
Your best option by far is to join a well organised group with lots of infrastructure and experience in helping their noobs. Goonswarm (Either via Karmafleet or using your Penny Arcade connections to join Merchi) are certainly one such group. If that culture doesn't appeal, then there's Pandemic Horde (constant nullsec fleet fights, and calling people cucks), TEST (constant nullsec fleet fights, and memes), Brave Newbies (constant nullsec fleet fights, and arguing about being classy and also poor), EVE University (hi-sec based, very structured), Signal Cartel (purely exploration focused) and quite a few others.
Right now, helping new players is the fashion, so join up to one of these groups, log in and get involved.

EVE Uni was pretty decent when I tried it.
They are constantly at war though, so if you join them all major trading hubs are inaccessible.
So hypothetically, what's stopping somebody from making two dozen alpha accounts, putting them all in cheap mining ships and making ridiculous bank? Or making 100+ alpha accounts, putting them all into rifters and making their own one-man rifter swarm? Bearing in mind that there are tools out there that let you fly 10+ ships at once and have been for a while. I know that EVE really didn't like it if you tried to make more than one trial account, but how does this work now that there ARE no more trial accounts?

1) Ship limits. The biggest thing you can get in to is a cruiser with t1 mining lasers.
2) Client limits. Only 1 Alpha client can be launched.
So there are ways around it using virtual machines and automation, but it seems like way more effort than it's worth that I don't see more than a tiny minority even trying it.

The extra earnings potential. of an omega is far.More than a.plex per month.
also ore prices and minerals are probably going to plummet a bit now with the rorqual changes. Holy God do rorquals tear through belts. Basically that ship + its hulk-sized 'excavator' drones count as something like 5 hulks, and they get buffs from the ship. I recall DBRB saying something like 200 rorquals could mine a titan up in less than 2 hours.

Wait, what? I missed those changes.
For business reasons, I must preserve the outward sign of sanity.

I want a Hel, so this is great for me.
Actually, what I really want is an Angel supercarrier but CCP are dragging their feet at introducing angel capitals. And I have my 6,000,000 Angel LP waiting.
Plexing from an Alpha could be painful unless you are a market wizard, without a carrier to sit in I think the couple hours at real job is a better use of time :P
Essentially you are restricted to T1 cruisers, T1/Meta/faction modules and the most basic industrials. What lengths the big alliances go to accommodate the new players remains to be seen but everyone is pretty excited. I look forward to helping out some newbies
As long as I can buy things off the market and make contracts, I can at least make some isk.
"I will write your name in the ruin of them. I will paint you across history in the color of their blood."
I don't know the exact reference, but I'm assuming that the alphas are the "Mundanes" and the omegas are the "Psi Cops" because of the usage of Greek lettering in psionic organizations in sci-fi (yes I know alpha is a Greek letter too, but omega and and stuff tends to get used for the psychic things more)
It is a reference to Babylon 5. The PSI Corps symbol was psi, however they had an elite dirty tricks group called Omega Squadron, who used the omega symbol on their fighters. Mundanes are the people without psionic abilities (telepathy mostly).
Is there a way to change the mouse zoom function? This game has a ton of options. I'm not sure if I'm just missing it or it's not there or what.
I guess I'm not sure about your question? Do you want it to do something besides zooming when you use the scrollwheel on a mouse?
I just want to switch the function. Scroll up to zoom in, scroll down to zoom out (Eve has this inverted from every game and application I've ever used, and it's hard to get used to).
logged on to play a little EVE but im an alpha clone now
I have small energy turret 5, but since that's an omega skill, the game just thinks I have no energy turret skills at all now, so I can't even use tech 1 guns
i feel like... that's probably the FIRST thing i would have tested if I were CCP, but hey, they're professionals right?

Aren't the weapon skills locked to faction?
So you need to be Amarr to use lasers.
Skills are dictated by character creation race, yeah. It prompted me to diversify with my next alt
thats a really crummy and poorly communicated thing for a pre-existing character. the UI error just says "you need the skill" and the UI panel says you have it
yeah that is something i was not aware of, that kind of sucks, feels like you are already limited severely as an alpha clone, but then you also are stuck to a specific race huh

If you wish to join, please follow the instructions in the OP of the (hilariously outdated) PA recruitment thread. Application instructions are still fine.

Is it real Free to Play or like SWTOR free to play where they let you in the door, but they'll cut your balls off on entrance?
The latter.
It's closer to an unlimited trial.
