Becoming a Big Brother mentor?

FleagleFleagle Registered User regular
Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the Big Brother/Big Sister program. A bit about myself, I'm 29, male, single and finally at a point in life where I'm somewhat comfortable financially. I had a very strong support system growing up, and lately I've been looking for volunteering opportunities to give something back. I'm a nurse, which means I have 4 days off a week, so time isn't an issue. I've always been good with kids (Nieces, nephews, cousins, etc), and I was thinking of signing up to be a mentor.

Does anyone have any experience with the program, either good or bad? How did the application/training process go? Am I biting off more than I can chew with this idea? Thanks in advance for any feedback!

I think I remember @deebaser mentioning he did BBBS. At least, I think it was BBBS and not some other mentoring program.

I applied to the program myself several years back and got denied because they didn't think I had enough free time, so unfortunately I can't really answer your questions in any more detail than you'd get off their website.

Time commitment I believe is a minimum of 2 meetings a week, flexible on your schedule, so you should be able to make it work.
