Digital audio out of my PC?
Right, so my motherboard has a S/PDIF output, and I'd like to figure out the most cost-effective way of using it.
I don't own any kind of receiver or amplifier at all, let alone one with an optical input. It seems like I could use one of those small portable amplifiers with a 3.5mm output jack to get the sound into my (powered) 2.1 speakers. This is the part where I need help. What are some good hardware options? I can't tell just by looking on Amazon or wherever which ones are actually good+cheap.
Also, I'm not sure but I believe the speakers/phones are quality enough to hear a difference in a cleaner signal. They're the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 set I got years ago. The headphones I use are Audio-Technica ATH-A700's.
Please post your thoughts.

something like a magni/modi combo is great: http://schiit.com/products/magni and http://schiit.com/products/modi
or a FIIO E17 if you want something portable.
DAC+AMP as a single device do exist, but from what I remember you tend to get better quality and about the same cost by buying them separate.
Go try the folks over in the audophile thread: http://forums.penny-arcade.com/discussion/142270/audiophilia-headphones-amps-daps-and-empty-wallets/
That's where I've learned what I know, but there are people in there who know way way more.
