Don't how many people are into their noodley weird black metal meets post-rock stylings, but the new Deafheaven sounds pretty dope so far. Much closer to Sunbather than their last album, but still pushing in new directions.

Oh, I guess Hello Nasty was released 20 years ago today.

That makes me feel old, but it also seems like a good time to post this:

Hello Nasty is a record that has aged remarkably well for me. When it came out it was easily my least favorite Beastie Boys album to date, but nowadays it might be like my second favorite.

Ah, it stinks, it sucks, it's anthropologically unjust

The Hold Steady have a new, very solid two-song EP out. One track has the Hold Steady-est stanza they've done in a while:
"The amphetamines did what amphetamines do/
And she was chewing through her cheek at the National Zoo/
And the dress she was wearing made a nice case for natural selection."

I am such a mark for Craig Finn's dirtbag poetry, goddamn

I feel like it depends on the band and the style, prog metal bands turning their 9 minute songs into 15 minute songs is pretty okay. If you like prog metal.

Yeah. It's a different beast when bands are turning their 3 minute pop songs into ridiculous long jams.

The White Stripes are the exception that gets a pass on this.

This past weekend being Pitchfork in Chicago got me nostalgic for a band I saw at their 2k9 show that I didn't quite know how to process, but I knew that I loved them. The singer of Ponytail also makes goofy live show faces that put Dave Matthews and Este Haim to shame.

We went to see Kesha live this week, after seeing Cracker on a boat last week. It was a very odd contrast to go from a small booze cruise where where I was eye to eye about a yard from David Lowery (which was amazing) to a giant stage show with UFOs and confetti cannons. Both were great in their own ways and now we're possibly doing another trip down to Boston for another boat ride to see Roger Clyne. Busy year for shows for us. Now if I can just get good seats for Hanson life will be complete.
