Battlefield 2142 - can't join servers without crash

I used to play 2142 nightly but have recently stopped to play other games. Now I wanted a quick game with a friend and when I tried to join a server, the music would stutter, a blue screen with white text would flash on the screen and the computer would restart. I've got the latest patch (v1.20) and everything.
I have no idea what could have made this happen, could anyone offer some help?
