since the CAT-astrophe, not only has there been one hard to find, yet still visible kitteh in each cartoon; there has also been one, if not more, completely hidden kittehs also.
in this case, the unseen kitteh is under the bed and it confiscates the shoes, so they can be taken back for hairball insertion and returned in the morning.
