Man, all these stories about bat-shit crazy state legislatures makes me so glad I live in California. Not that California doesn't have its own problems... but at least we're not shutting down abortion clinics, cutting all sources of government revenue, restricting voter rights, and enacting crazy new gun laws (like allowing guns in bars).

But don't you have to ability to raise spending via popular referendum, but are unable to raise taxes for said spending unless you have a 2/3 vote in your State Legislature? Meaning you mandate more and more spending every year without ever finding money for it?

Like he said, California has its own problems.

Although we do have a surplus right now. And the Governor is basically saying "hell no" to the spending increases the legislature is pushing and is putting another referendum this year which will mandate that surpluses go to pay down the debt or be put into a rainy day fund

    This statement is false.

A California concealed carry license holder can drink at a bar while wearing a concealed firearm. He'll lose his license forever, but since it's not against the law (it's just a rule set by the AG's office), that's the only punishment he can receive (granted, it's harsh enough that no licensee would tempt it).

My guess is that you also don't realize California is a stand your ground state, and that it's one of the very few states that allows concealed carry in schools and universities.

    So... kinda like Leland Yee?

I'm kinda surprised there isn't a thread dedicated to the insane shit he's gotten himself into, considering the (now extremely hypocritical) law he tried to pass against violent video games that was struck down at the Supreme Court that got most of our attention.

So my governor has been using a plane owned by his wife's company to travel to campaign events and not reporting it on his campaign finance reports. The FLADEMs started making noise about it and his campaign released this wonderful and well written rebuttal:
Maybe Charlie Crist and his friends can't read. The campaign pays for the use of the governor's plane and that is in black and white in our report. This is just pure mudslinging from a guy who mounted a record of failure and then ran away.

Considering I had to read that two or three times to notice the trick... I would say that it's technically well-written. As in, someone is good at making you hear something totally different from what they're technically saying.

I'm not sure it actually matters. It initially reads as a "he said she said" - just making the exact opposite claim, so most people will just believe whichever side they already favor. The trick in it mostly just lets him cover his ass when someone pulls out the documents, but unless it's pointed out on the news with the documents being shown and such it probably won't have any effect on anything.

In "my fucking home state" news, one of the five dwarves fighting for the nomination for the at large House seat pines for the days of no speed limits and blames the federal government. This is pant-habidashery because one, the federal government doesn't set speed limits anymore, and two, it was the courts that banned the removal of speed limits, because there was too much ambiguity (you still had to drive the conditions.)

Over in SC, a GOP candidate analogizes the Civil War as a battered wife (the South) trying to flee an abusive husband (the North).

“That’s kind of how that worked out,” Bright said, “but that side’s never told in our history books because if you, um, Napoleon — Napoleon, one of my favorite quotes that Napoleon said was that ‘history is the agreed-upon fable.’”

At that point, technical difficulties with his microphone prevented him from elaborating.

    lol

'...and the story about how he isn’t a racist is lost.'

    EDIT: Holy shit.
When discussion resumed, he was questioned by his Senate colleagues about his contention that the state is subsidizing “pornography” in a K-12 program.

When his Senate colleague informed him that Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel about coming out, Fun Home, was only being taught in colleges, Bright said that he knew his colleague liked him, but “not the way people like each other in this book” as he held up a xeroxed copy of an excerpt from Fun Home.
...the Republican-led South Carolina House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee cut the college's funding by $52,000, the cost of the summer reading program, to punish the college for selecting Fun Home. Rep. Garry Smith, who proposed the cuts, said that in choosing Fun Home the university was "promoting the gay and lesbian lifestyle". Rep. Stephen Goldfinch, another supporter of the cuts, said, "This book trampled on freedom of conservatives. ... Teaching with this book, and the pictures, goes too far." Bechdel called the funding cut "sad and absurd" and pointed out that Fun Home "is after all about the toll that this sort of small-mindedness takes on people's lives." The full state House of Representatives subsequently voted to retain the cuts.

...Free speech: Okay for Rush Limbaugh, not so much okay for gay people.

But it totally protects minorities and academic freedom, somehow. Totally.

Send him to Virginia, we can make him throw a hissy fit over having to drive our interstate speed limits to get out of the state.

Marvel as the whiny man gets pissy at the dreaded 60 mile and hour speed limit of I-95 North towards Richmond! Gasp as he makes a wrong turn and whimpers at only being permitted to go 65 on 288 as he heads for Charlottesville!

EDIT: in retrospect, I suppose heading for Charlottesville might not necessarily be a wrong turn if you're trying to get to Montana :P

That's if he doesn't get stuck in gridlock on I-95, it gets much slower then.

Speaking of Virginia, the GOP of the state is having quite the delightful little civil war in the various primaries. Can'tor's is on June 10th, I doubt he'll lose. That said, we might get a quite a bit of entertainment if the fight between the tea party and the establishment carries on past the primaries into the general. I'll have to see which districts besides the 7th, would have been great ones to field a candidate in for the dems, in such a scenario. I think it's a damn shame the dems didn't get someone on the ballot for the 7th and it might not be the only one. Sure still might not win, but if we're looking at the GOP having a split, it becomes much easier to snag some of these districts.

Yeah, I might not like certain politicians or parties, but it's fucking appalling that there are shitheads who resort to the mudslinging tactic of dragging out the issues of the opponent's family members. Issues that really have nothing to do with the position the race is suppose to fill. Hell, sometimes the sniping at friends is also bullshit. Like if it has absolute nothing to do with the office or how the person is going to run it, I don't want to see shitty sniping like that.

Mr. Pierce also rabidly defends a certain person who claims the solution for all our problems is for liberals to stay home and punish Democrats by not voting, and that threatening politicians with guns is totally awesome. He's fun for snark, but he's utterly hypocritical and can't seem to remember what the people he shills for and against actually stand for from one day to the next. He's fun to read, but nothing he writes should be taken seriously or as the truth.

In fairness, it is better - if only slightly better - to have some immoral conservative ideologues in power rather than insane white supremacist lunatics.

I mean, imagine a Republican party full of nothing But Rand Paul clones. You'd have defaulted, and now be living through whatever the consequences of that default would've been. Boner & McConnell are awful people, but (if we assume the choice is one or the other) it's better to have them than to have, say, birther lunatics or Confederate militia.
