I take a bit of issue to the notion that Shulk is just another swordguy. Yes, the Monado is in the form of a sword, but it carries a variety of special moves that are different entirely from the swordplay used by the other sword guys. Stuff like lengthening to double size for a strike, whipping out an energy blast, summoning a whirlwind, and whatever the heck Eater is.
For similar reasons, I don't particularly find Isaac or Robin to just be swordguys either. What with their magic and stuff.
The problem is that A-moves have traditionally been more significant than B-moves in Smash Brothers, with the former being used for most combat and the latter being situational, to say nothing of the fact that there are always a lot more A-moves than B-moves. Link may have his bag of wonderful toys, Marth may have his fencing techniques, Ike has his fire and a hypothetical Shulk, Isaac, or Robin would have their magical spell-powers, but they'd all still be spending most of their time beating on people with a sword of some kind.
(I totally want Shulk, Isaac, and Robin all playable, mind you.)
My favorite musical instrument is the air-raid siren.
I dunno. I could probably come up with an Isaac or Robin moveset using a majority of spell moves for physicals.
Also, they each have different fighting styles in any case, even when using swords. You'd never mistake Link's fighting style for Ike's. Or Marth's for Meta Knight's. Much like it is with the slew of characters who use their fists and feet for fighting.

You know, I have such a hard time selling that logic when the topic is Wolf.
I never thought Ike would be back, but I'm really psyched he is. Even better, his Radiant Dawn version! When he first shows up in that game, it's like "wow, Ike's been lifting since last game... " and then he backs it up by being devastatingly powerful for the rest of the chapters he's in. He may seem like just another sword guy at first glance, but the difference between a power-based greatsword user like Ike and a fencer like Marth is pretty big. It WOULD be nice to get a rep like Hector, though.. Hey, do all the best FE characters have blue hair?

If there is one constant rule Smash Bros seems to follow, it's that franchises lead with their main playable character. For games with multiple playable characters, like F-Zero and Pokémon, they seem to pick the most prominent/popular. For RPGs, they go with the lead, like Ness and Lucas.
Jigglypuff.
Jigglypuff isn't Smash's lead Pokémon representive. I didn't say anything about when they go beyond the main characters, but that trend seems to be prominent/popular secondary characters and the main villain/antagonist of the series.
JP was straight up added because they could reuse the Kirby model + was popular enough at the time
Coko's right, there's no series represented by some oddball choice - if you're looking at who would be the lead, check the front of the box or the beginning of the character list. In xenoblade's case it's shulk
Isaac would definitely need a few sword moves, but I can't imagine that Isaac would need to rely on his sword that much. His smash attacks and a few of his aerials could easily be psynergy moves or unleashes.
In Golden Sun, it is possible to make unleashes and crits more common than regular attacks.
Edit: However, quite a few magicky attacks consist of summoning projectile swords.
Some of the weapon unleashes get pretty ridiculous. The Sol Blade has seemingly a 50% chance of hurling the sun at the enemy each time you use it.
In The Lost Age, you can get it above 90 %. In Dark Dawn, weapons have up to three unleashes, so nothing is that reliably powerful, but a lot of different magicky bullshit can happen every time you try to hit something.
If there's a reason as to why Pikachu is the defacto "lead" pokemon in SSB, it's almost certainly because of the anime, which brief wiki'ing puts it at debuting in '97, two years before SSB in '99.

A lot of Pokemon stuff in SSB is from the anime. Pokemon don't speak using their names in the games, like they do in both Smash and the anime. Also, the Smash Bros Goldeen is a direct reference to it's appearance in the anime.
Plus Mewtwo uses Shadow Ball as one of his primary moves since he tossed around similar blasts in the anime. Not to mention Lucario being able to just straight up talk.
Pokemon not speaking their names in the game is more of a hardware limitation and nowadays just a practical way to cut down on dev time. You'd need voice actors for each language to voice all 700+ pokemon which is just not economic compared to hiring a handful for whatever appears in a given episode.

Well no its because theyre supposed to be animals . They've never really said their names in game its always gyuu or growr or some other onomatopoeia. Pikachu is the sole exception for mascot reasons I guess.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.
Pokemon in the games are often subtitled, and the subtitle doesn't need to match the soundclip, so voice-acting is a marginal factor at most.
There have been cases of pokemon in the games being subtitled with their own names, but those are the minority.

Pic of the day. Here's a look at the revival platforms. The color of the bottom mechanism changes from yellow to red to warn you how much time you have left before you drop into the fray.

It's kind of hilarious when you get to that point too.

A bee! Better unleash my ultimate moves!
I've never played Golden Sun but I agree on principle alone. Fuck bees.
And Jigglypuff, iirc - as each was a version exclusive.

Don't worry too much. Sonic and Megaman are pals these days.
Archie Comics had a big crossover where they sorted out their differences.
Although Dr. Wily hates Robotnik for trying to murder Dr. Light. So, that's a thing.
Why I fear the ocean.
Also all archie crossovers are canon.
Especially Archie vs The Punisher.
