I'm up to lv21 now. I'm probably gonna bail on this beta and just wait for release - I never like investing time into characters that are just gonna get wiped anyway. I'm already theorycrafting mass PvP setups though.
So as I understand it - if you pay the subscription fee you get twice as many Labor points when you're logged in and you also generate them when you're logged out? I bet you could get by with fewer. I only ran out of them once because I was doing those "self-sufficient" (or whatever they're called) quests.
Yep. I think it's 10 logged in and 5 logged off for patron. Freebies are 5 and 0 and they can't own land (no houses, no farms). I think those are the biggest differences.
Some people have said that changes are coming to the labor system before release, but no firm numbers that I have heard.

I'm considering taking the plunge on this. Are the beta events every few weeks now? I know there's one going on, but I'm up in the air on if the alpha access is worth it too. No MMO's at the moment are keeping me interested, but the PvP videos I've seen look rather fun.
Seems like a cross between Rift / UO / Final Fantasy? Does that sound about right?
Yea I am probally done messing around with the betas. Don't wanna burn out on it. Unless they do something with labor before it launches then i might check it out.
This beta was my first one. I had a good time. Now, I'm just torn/wondering what class I want to play (I did a caster-type this time, but next cb I think I'll try a more melee character (not sure if I should start a new character or just respec my current guy who's in his late 20's).
One question, any plans tonight for the last night of this beta? I was kinda hoping to go exploring, ride on a boat, die in new and exciting ways, things like that.

my boat is available for hijinks, but I will not be on tomorrow so it would have to be tonight

If you don't mind doing the zones again I'd say start over. It gives a better idea how to play it and you don't have to try and regear from like phys to magic

So whoever suggested Songcraft/Shadowplay to go along with Sorcerer, good call. The added utility is really good, and Sorcerer already lays waste by itself. I'm going to keep trying different combos in the alpha, but I'm filing this one away as a definite possibility for my first release character.

During this beta session that's what I ended up playing (sorcerer/songcraft/shadowplay). The spellinger was a blast (lots of dps from sorc, cc & utility from the other two trees... and that's only at lvl 30, I imagine it's better the more you can unlock) and that class combo is one I'll be considering as well.
Sounds like the consensus for trying a melee dude is to just make a new character next time around. I guess I'll have a while to figure out what I want to try (tanky-guy, dual-wield guy, two-hander guy? anyone have any feedback/experience with any of those types of characters) before the next beta.
I had fun this go around, almost tempted to pay to get into the alpha so I can keep playing/experimenting, but and extra $100 is a bit steep I think (I broke down this weekend and ordered the cheapest founders pack). Do we know when or how many more closed beta tests they plan on having?

At least one confirmed, CB4, in about a week and a half. I would imagine open beta will follow a few weeks after that. So you'd probably get a couple solid weeks in alpha to experiment. Whether that's worth it to you depends entirely on your cash flow situation vs. how much you think you could play.
Is it just like UO where you get killed and your stuff taken over and over/you find people to kill over and over and take their stuff, or is it organized?

it is somewhere inbetween
world PVP is a thing, but there is no stealing of stuff on death beyond trade packs (which is a big deal)
There is also a somewhat organized running battle ongoing in one of the zones

Pvp is not very punishing. You are safe at a res site. You lose no gold. They get honor/ or a criminal history dependant on situation.
orginized pvp falls into gladiatorial arenas that give a nice chunk of honor either way. also keep stuff in the north and events in the higher level zones. Ie the battle of golden plains where you defend an attack at the start of war time in an enemy zone.
Alpha egg runs tonight? I can bard us to a faster donkey speed.

Trying to think what other classes I want to try in the alpha. Maybe Paladin and Inquisitor. Probably something archery based as well; Ranger and Ebonsong caught my eye.
Didn't get very far in beta after checking a few of the starting areas out. I was liking Sorcery/Vitalism combo I had going but hadn't decided what third skill group to go with it.
I'm going to put the brakes on as well until the live release. I played enough to know that this is worth buying a month or two of patron access and fully exploring. Don't want to burn out on the quest grind in the meantime.

Had some fun sailing on some guys giant Galleon last night. not much happened and we only shot up some rowboats on our patrol of the enemy coast. But it's really cool how interactive the big ships are.
a lot of stuff about this looks interesting but I'm getting an Eve vibe from it where I'll just get griefed for all eternity unless I'm in like a top 5 guild
I didn't get to play a whole lot - I only got two characters to around level 10 each - but nothing really grabbed me about Archeage. However, I feel like I didn't play it enough to give it a fair shake, so it's hard to really judge things. Will my characters be around for the next beta test? I think there is one more beta test right?

I made it to the low 20s and the questing doesn't get any better. It's the same mindless slog that every MMO since WoW has done. That said, it seems like the pace is really fast and there are lots of other interesting elements to make it worthwhile. The world is beautiful and vast and the crafting system is deeper than any other game I've played. Endgame conflicts aren't going to revolve around running dungeons over and over - it's going to be economic competition for rare crafting materials and income streams with all the bloody feuds that go along with guild warfare. I hate, hate, hate PvE raiding and I have high hopes this game will be different.
It seems like the $15/mo. "patron" charge is basically required for anyone serious about the game, but at least there's no $50 up front cost.

There are a number of systems in place to prevent that.
Even though open seas are full PvP you still rack up Infamy for killing same faction peoples. This can lead to jail time or worst case being labeled a Pirate and getting kicked out of your faction completely (which means no dungeons, quests, merchants, maybe no AH, you can still craft however doing so puts you at great risk). It should also be noted that Pirates cannot be a member of a player faction either.
Auroria is full on PvP as well and is the land where Guilds can claim territory. However, Guilds can only control one piece at a time. On top of that the Guild Siege system they have in place puts all guilds on equal footing. When initiating a Guild Siege (which can only happen at the same time each Saturday) each side can only bring 70 people from their Guild for the fight (defending Guild can hire an additional 30 Merc players). When the Guild Siege starts a giant "bubble" pops up around the battlefield and expels anyone not directly involved with the Siege until it is complete.
There is only cross-faction PvP on the two main continents, but even then it seems the "defending" faction has to initiate hostilities. Apart from that there or four or so open PvP areas on the two main continents. However, after the killing reaches a certain point it enters "peaceful" mode and there is no PvP allowed for X amount of time.
Large Guilds will, of course, have an advantage when it comes to gathering resources, but there'd be little reason for them to attack their own side and the other faction is just as likely to have a bigass Guild protecting their faction peoples as well. Even if a big Guild created their own faction they'd be at war with literally everyone else in the game.

this game is about 30 +.
The quests to this point teach you systems and get you levels. After that its farming and pvp zones and trade and hate and love and blood in the water and hunting man for sport and piracy.

From what I've read / heard in game, this actually happened on Alpha. A large guild got a bad rep, and a number of the smaller guilds ganged up on them - to the point that the large guild had to disband.

I've gotta say the closed betas have been too close together so far. No changes between the ones I've experienced so far.

Not sure what else to run it with though
Shadowplay and Archery?
You can sneak up on them, peg them in the knee, and then play a whimsical ditty over them while they writhe in pain on the ground.
I don't care for archery

They were on their way to Auroria, where they became the first guild on the server during beta to claim land
