I just finished the big baddie for the first area and...

HOLY SHIT WAS THAT BATTLE EPIC!
Braccus Rex just decides to summon his 3 buddies. I'm not sure if that's supposed to happen, because I surely went and killed them all earlier, but damn. A 4v4 for the ages. I had my rogue start combat, eat a fireball or 2 and ran through the doorway (where my party was waiting on either side of the door). Braccus runs through first, and I "close" the door behind him with a Fire Elemental (who also gets Fortified). The-Twins-Joined was next in line, so he couldn't hurt the elemental and the other two couldn't get past Twins for most of the fight.

So it was my Party vs. Braccus for a while, and nothing was working man. NOTHING WAS WORKING. Until finally a boulder drop got him into CC territory. 3 out of 4 of my party has Bully, so that helped immensely. Then Braccus starts hitting and... running? He gets a good bit away, a sliver away from death, and launches tactical fucking nukes all over the people holding the door. Instantly kills 2, with fire trapping my mage in the corner with no escape.

Madora finishes off Braccus (FINALLY) and the baddies decide to get smart and go around the fire elemental right at my mage. !! FUCK. I Fortify the mage and chug a 30% fire resist potion. She has to hold the line, trapped in corner with cloth armor, a bit of magic and a prayer while Madora regens enough action points to raise the rest of the party.

Thank God it was enough. The rez's go off and the rest was clean up. But holy hell, that fight had me sweating. I was feeling sincere fright for that mage trapped in the corner (my Scarlet).

    I love this game. <3

I'm in the exactly same spot, though my fight went completely differently.
I'm pretty sure he is meant to summon his buddies because it would be way too easy otherwise. In my fight, we were all in the middle of the room and everybody got hammered by his first barrage of fire. I summoned an ice elemental and a fire elemental and started healing back up, but before I got my hitpoints back up Ghoul shot poison at my fire/earth wizard which of course reacted violently with the fire on the floor. She went down and the fight had barely started. Enemies concentrated on my elementals, so I killed the Twins fast with ice magic while Madora two-shotted the ghoul with a lucky huge crit. Braccus ran away, buffed himself with Rage and then killed one disposable elemental after another. I took down the Baron and then moved on to the King himself with Madora dealing most of the damage.

Besides the early part of the fight it wasn't really that hard for me, though I'm playing on normal. Enemies really love killing elementals and with the low cooldown on them you can cast more than one per battle so they are awesome tanks.

    Still, a great fight. :D

OK, so the quest from the "Fabulous Five" apparently completes by talking to the mayor. My brother and I killed the mayor (I swear he was coming right for us). Is there anyone else we can talk to to say "oh hey, we finished that thing" and get our xp?

That fight got slightly hairy for my friend and I until I managed to line them up properly. I hate to admit that we kind of cheesed the fight after it went tits up the first time...by dropping two oil barrels and an ooze barrel right on top of where the Ghoul spawns, so he died on the first turn to a fireball. Then an ice elemental and myself as a tank goaded the other 3 into a line so my mage friend could keep 2 of the 3 frozen for...infinity I think...while I beat the everliving tar out of whichever one wasn't frozen at the time and to pen it in.

The whole two Lone Wolf playthrough got a bit too easy for us, though. We're playing on Hard now and have actually had to reload a couple of non-boss battles (I didn't know it was lava, honest!).

Everyone should get the "leech" ability.

Everyone. Caster, melee... doesn't matter. Its just free heals.

I'm not sure how the heal scales, I think its a % of your life thing. Cause my casters get hit for say, 100 and heal for 30-40 from it (which is still awesome). When Madora gets hit for it, she might get hit for like 60, but she will heal for 100 or so... she does have 2000 life though, so probably a % healed from the blood.

I've had times where 3-4 melee mobs are on Madora, they all do MORE healing to her than the actual damage she takes.

Another thing people should use to break the game are those teleport pyramids. Some puzzles and barriers are easily solved with them. Also its important to note that no matter where your characters are, their inventories are still able to transfer. So if you need to put the pyramid on someone else you can and take advantage of it.

I'd love to give this a try, but I dont really have any gaming buddies able to play co-op with for significant amounts of time. If I play solo am I going to have a restricted experience?

Also the turn based nature of this really appeals to me - will I be able to play it in bed on my laptop with the trackpad, or are parts of it Diablo-y click fests?

Not really, you just have more people to control, and the NPC AI isn't quite done, so your companion can either be loyal (agrees with your decisions), or random - which means sometimes the other 'main' character will argue and you play a rock/paper/scissors metagame to figure out who wins the argument.

No click fests at all, but there is enough clicking (inventory, picking things up, etc) that a touchpad will probably get annoying at times.

I'm playing single player and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. With the inventory management, crafting, etc I'm not sure I would like co-op too much. It would be a lot of waiting around, I think.

You'll also be fine with the trackpad. There isn't anything spammy about the game; it's turn based after all. Clicking on rats (if you took the pet pal talent) can be annoying if you don't sneak up on them. Just sneak and it's not a problem.

Man you guys. Glass Cannon is so great on a Mage once your intelligence is high enough that cool downs aren't an issue. I'm dropping fireballs and knockdowns and buffs every round.

Seems like for a mage you want Int and Speed? I played a mostly int-focused mage to level 6 or something, and was always very tight on AP in combat. It was not a comfortable feeling.

Mostly Int but the occasional point in speed yeah. Glass Cannon halves your HP but doubles your AP recovery. Int will increase damage done by spells and reduce their cool downs. I have all but the absolute most powerful spells on a one or two turn cool down. It's great.

This goddamn game. slight spoiler for mayor staff quest.
Every time I reload the stupid fucking fight on the beacc for the staff the mayor is looking for, the enemies are invisible, so they basically get a free turn on me to fuck me up before I can attack them. Fix your shit Larian studios. I basically cannot complete the fight without a massive amount of goodluck rng. Fuck.

Oh, I didn't know Int lowered cooldowns. I've been throwing the occasional point into Constitution to absorb mistakes, basically.

Anyone who has gotten to late game, is it better to kind of razor focus your mage on a couple schools or spread out a bunch? Basically I have two mages and I've been focusing on Aero and Hydra on Jahan and Geo and Pyro on Scarlet. Problem is I now have a bunch of extra ability points floating around that I'm not sure what to do with. My rogue is my crafter, so that's out. Weapon skills are useless. I guess Willpower would be okay but I don't want to lose out on the next big thing for pyromancy.

    Advice?

Yikes. Bugs happen, especially in huge games. Breathe in, count to 3, breathe out. Repeat. It will be okay. Submit a bug report to them with details if you want to make sure they're aware of it so they can fix it.

I have two mages as well. They're focusing on two schools each but I've put a few points into all the elements for them (and witchcraft for one of them. Mass Weakness and Oath of Desecration are too good to pass up).

I restarted to have three mages and a meat wad who will one day prove his worth but for now is building his strength by dragging a sack full of heavy armor and weapons around behind the rest of the party while they blow everything up.

All three mages have teleport, two of them have summons. S'good times.

So, I gotta ask. Is there a rhyming asshole wizard in this one too?
    Yes.
    Two, actually.

So I guess I finished up everything around Cyseal. I'm kinda confused by the big fight at the end though
Does killing Braccus' minions ahead of time weaken them for the fight, or do you just do it for the glorious XP and loot?

Also, I ended up beating the fight without really cheesing it. I put some oil barrels by the door planning to make a trap and lure the enemies into it. Instead, it filtered out the minions so I was only ever fighting Braccus + 1, and his adds were weak enough that I could focus them down in a round or two.

Really opaque mechanics at work though. I got that Braccus absorbed fire damage, but it seemed like he'd randomly heal himself when i attacked him (without using fire damage). I guess his 'burning ground' effect was triggering, but it would trigger crazy often and was really annoying.

It's pretty common for elementals of all stripes to "bleed" their element when struck and when they die (also zombies bleed poison). I think piercing weapons might cause bleeding more effectively? That's just a guess.

I've learned that summoning an ice elemental can be kind of a pain if I don't think about positioning. It took Madora a few times slipping in the ice to figure out what was happening there.

This game is confusing as hell in co-op. There's basically no way to keep track of anything that's going on, quest-wise. Conversations just happen and quests start and finish and neither person can tell what the other is doing or saying.

Yeah, I think it's fairly accurate. I feel like in terms of (lengthy or involved) sidequests, the first area has more than most other areas. The second area is massive but most of what you do there relates to the main plot one way or another.

The quest journal is excellent, and if you really want you can move around together and take the conversations slower. Combat log also shows the text of whatever conversation is going on. Or you can usually go talk to the same guys your co-op partner already talked with. The potential for confusion is a price the game pays for the amount of freedom you have - you can both move independently which can be a real boon at times.

If you both are running around to different directions talking to different people at the same time with no coordination with each other, then yeah. But that's more on you than on the game since it doesn't have to be done that way.

  • AistanAistan Tiny Bat Registered User regular
Eh, i'm playing the cold-hearted sneakthief looting everything while he's talking to the people and finding out their troubles, so it's working out alright.

I'll probably play single player alongside it just so I can get a context for what we're doing though.

Evelyn. She summons a bunch of things around her immediately, but the fight is made so easy by just using Teleport on one of those burning dog things. Lift it up, drop it down, it EXPLODES and heavily damages/kills everything.

Basically the person in charge can assign as many or as few of the party members to the other player as he wants.

It tends to work out that each of you takes a main character and a companion, you can wander anywhere on the same map without eachother and the maps are super large.

You'll most likely want to stay close together though to participate in conversations together or rob someone blind while your partner keeps them distracted talking.

Combat is all turn based so it works out perfectly there.

If someone does enter combat and you're far away you can use your teleport thingy to reach them fast or just run to them, you'll be slotted into combat when you get there so they can just sit until you do.

For people past "The Initiation" in Silverglen, did any of you manage to
get the Locked In achivement? I assume you have to pickpocket Loic to steal his key before he can make a break for the portal to summon help, but with 5 base pickpocketing I can't even access his stealing page.

I tried blocking him off from the door with pots and chests but he just teleports straight to the portal if you do it that way. I'll make a save here and maybe come back to it if I can find out a hard number I have to hit with gear.
