A lottery system would have been the only smart way to do this. All preorders are assigned a lottery number. Each day at a set time they call a number range, those 1000 get to claim names.
Worked pretty well for the draft....it's the only reason my dad didn't go to nam and that I'm here to type this. As much drama as these name queens are creating it certainly would have been less of a clusterfuck of who can spam the server the most consistently.
If you lost a name and have a screenshot, it seems like there may be some hope. Someone lost a guild name and #WildStarOps wants their email ....presumably to "fix things"

So wait I am confused, what's happening/happened with name reservations?
That's so weird that link says pre order required, when I have the digital deluxe edition, I wonder if that's an issue?
Edit: This saddens me. How will I bring about The Great Calamity this way?
refresh every few seconds or so. I had to refresh it a couple of times, but You know what you have when something like this shows up: (I replaced some numbers with 1's, because I'm paranoid that those are id markers)
"Take name reservations down" =/= undoing or reverting names that managed to get registered.
This is what I said they should have done hours ago. Not revert it, not force a do-over. Just put a stop to registering until they have it sorted out and can set another day up where things will at least vaguely sort of work without forcing people to essentially attempt a DOS attack against their website to get a name through. If they had done this much, much earlier they would have been left with the embarrassment and dissatisfaction, but far fewer people angry because they actually lost a name.
In all honesty - had they not done reservations, this would have played out anyways day 1 of early access. People would still be losing out on the name they wanted to faster people and server issues and...

The reason they did reservations may have been to keep everyone from planning to all log in at the exact same moment on the first day of early access (there will be plenty of people doing that anyway, but not everyone).
But the web page they set up for this was just horrible.

Yeah, it should have been set up as a queue thing - you fill form, submit, and go to a waiting page until the server can reply.
I hope they let people keep the names they got. While that may seem unfair to those you didn't, and it most certainly is, one of the reasons I preordered was name reservation. I wanted a specific name for once, because I always seem to lose it to an asshole who never plays.
They could wipe the databases, set up a new system, and do this a few days before head start. I wouldn't complain.
I would complain about having to stay up till servers go up, make my dude, go to bed, and pray everything didn't get rolled-back during the initial stupidity which is an MMO launch.
The number one reason for this fuckup was a poorly designed website. Servers be damned, I would have rather refreshed a 404 page, than that fucking bullshit.

I ain't too fussed about name reservations, but I feel for the people who were all chomping at the bit to make sure they had their dream name lined up.
On a positive note, in the course of looking into this process, I discovered my GMG pre-order copy code, for whatever reason, had not gone through and I was for all intents and purposes not yet 'pre-ordered'. I have that situated now.
A bunch of people successfully get the names they want and relax, lay off the game for a few days.
In the meantime Carbine announces that because it went so poorly, they're wiping it all and scheduling a new name registration day in a couple more days.
Imagine all the people who never get the memo because they had relaxed and thought they were all set!

Good lord. I am always exceptionally torn on my character selection on MMO releases, but I think Wildstar might be the roughest of all. Faction...race...class...path...crafting...I JUST DON'T KNOW.
I'm tempted to peruse the forums just to bask in the nuclear glow, but I know that way lays madness and pregnancy.
I always just get really depressed when I read official forums. Seeing that much hate makes me lose faith in the game. It's an irrational "sheeple" psychosis, but I'll be damned if it doesn't happen every time.

Just remember, even when faced with the volume of the Official forums, that it is typically a Vocal Minority and not representative of the playerbase as a whole.

Yes, but it would be MMO business as usual. We've been dealing with that system since unique names became a thing. It's hard to get angry over a system that is a decade old. At least with no name reservation, you could hop servers in hopes that your name isn't taken elsewhere. Unfortunately with global name reservation, that is also not possible.
Also, if anyone thinks that this name reservation system is going to somehow lighten server load on launch/headstart day, then I have a bridge to sell you.

I'm fuckin' shocked. Like, happy you kept it.
But, shocked.
edit: explanation is "server lag" , but people have been able to at least take other people's guild names.

{"character":"Ratzputin","guild":false,"tte":{"character":1411131111,"guild":null}}the false and the null points mean that I didn't put in a guild name and thus, don't have a reservation for guild name.

Guess I took a good time to not pay attention.
Who knows if it will remain ,though.

I did get Skeeter though.
I think.

Either way, stay away from the official forums till things cool down. (or you know, just don't go there, it's not safe)

You all should just bump my post to make name registration guy a killable npc. It's catharsis for everybody!
I didn't get as many supporters as I had hoped for.
(yes this is a plug, )
It would be, a god damn PR nightmare.
I'm pretty sure I'd be the joke of the office if I took off a day to reserve a name in an MMO
Pre-order canceled?
You save those comp days for the fucking launch, you scrubs. Jeebus.
If I can't due to MMO reasons?
I'll grab the wife, a pony keg, and go camping for a long weekend. I mean, I've got the time off and it's just beautiful here.
Fuck sitting around and watching a "Logging in..." box for ten hours.
I'm too old for that shit.
yeah I don't see them scrapping it like that unless they've exhausted every other possible solution and that was the last resort.

They're just so vocal.
Like, if that guy was doing that in any social setting I could just spit back at him to shut the fuck up. Can't do that on the internet.
People are allowed to be fuckin' tools here.
