A bunch of people successfully get the names they want and relax, lay off the game for a few days.
In the meantime Carbine announces that because it went so poorly, they're wiping it all and scheduling a new name registration day in a couple more days.
Imagine all the people who never get the memo because they had relaxed and thought they were all set!
That already happened today in a different form.
Lots of people clicked "Save" and thought it was saved, closed their browsers and called 'er a day. Only to later find out that their reservation didn't stick because the timer didn't pop up and there was no indication that clicking "Save" resulted in a 503 error that you could only see if you were looking at your browser console.
Anyone else have a ton of trouble patching today? I have problems before and did all the junk the 'Patch Failed' support page suggested(port forwarding, when it was there and directed you to some ridiculous virus laden program, startup services and new account creation), but I still have massive problems with patching during the day. Is this a fios problem?

I was having the issue described last page - launcher wouldn't run...when it did, wouldn't patch. Couldn't re-download the client.
Turns out it was Fios fucking us over. Flushed DNS, added the Wildstar patch IPs to my hosts file, and now it's working and patching properly....I'd suggest you start there.
Think I managed to reserve Draeven as a name and will most likely use it for an alt, Ill prolly just throw together a Granok name at head start, Thats usualy how I manage to do these things.

I thought my first attempt to reserve a name worked, but it apparently did not. I almost never get the name "Holiday".
I managed to get my second choice of hard-to-get names, though. Hopefully, "Navarre" sticks.
What that means for me is that my main will be a Stalker and it might actually keep me from rolling an alt until day 15. Having a Spellslinger Scientist called "Holiday PhD" would be too awesome.
Good thing my name isn't common. Although I think this whole reserve stuff is silly. Just wait till server are released and live to let people get their names by creating the actual character.
Although I suppose I could understand guild name kinda.
edit: Also saved guild name: IamAunquieSnowFlake in case we really wanted it.
Headstart will at least be better than actual launch though, I would hope. Maybe.
Actually, there's basically no reason to assume that. The reverse is way more likely(Headstart being a mess and release being smooth). Anyone and everyone who buys the game pre-headstart is technically a pre-order. So every person who's bought the game so far can play day 1 of the headstart. Meanwhile, it'll only be the people who buy after the headstart but before the official release date who'll have to wait for release. The number of pre-orders is almost certainly greater than the number of people who'll buy it during that 3 day period. So launch of the headstart should be a clusterfuck of the highest degree(like most MMO launches), and release will be little more than a whimper(comparatively).

To be honest I fully expect both headstart and release to be giant cluster fucks.
But it will also have little to no impact on the life of the game, just like every other MMO in existence. People will bitch about it, they will cry foul, they will scream for refunds, "How did the Devs not prepare for this?", "They should have known better!", "I thought this time would be different!", and then a few weeks after the fact no one will care or remember because the population will have spread out a bit to more normal distribution as people go back to their regular routines, the servers will handle the load they were set up to handle, and life will go on.
And years down the road people won't even remember there was a bad release, they will instead remember it fondly or not at all as every other aspect of the game (good or bad) completely overshadows the brief (relatively) hiccup at the start.
As it always does.

It's going to be rough, because the devs have stated that they aren't going to go crazy with new servers during launch. Releasing a boatload of new servers is partially what killed WAR because it heavily diluted the playerbase.
This is a tricky deal, especially since the headstart begins on a weekend. I mean, not every MMO release has been a WoW-esque disaster, and comparing a website to game servers isn't really on the mark.

Oh I don't even really look at this website thing as a blip. I'm just calling up my past experiences with (probably way to many ) MMOs , and while they may not all hit the scope of the WoW launch they all typically come fairly close in some aspect or another.
Very few are smooth launches, they all have their problems, and the vast majority of the time it's server load. I'm sure the Wildstar Devs will do whatever they can to mitigate it, but it will most likely happen, the players will get through it with the usual hub bub, and then it will be promptly forgotten.
It shouldn't be that way, but from the developer standpoint it's much more efficient to mitigate the fallout of a bad launch (which is typical of an MMO) than it is to rent out/buy additional server infrastructure as you correctly mentioned. The answer is to weather the storm and do PR damage control the best you can until it inevitably stabilizes. Which is no easy feat mind you, but the standard course of action it seems.
e: I'm just cautioning people to not be surprised when/if it happens, and to realize it won't be that way forever if it does. The first couple weeks or so of an MMO are a drop in the bucket of the life of the game.

Someone took a sledgehammer to the Dominion part of the spreadsheet. I've mostly cleaned it up, but a handful of entries got eaten and there are some oddities like "BrightWing" showing up twice.

Someone's having a full blown meltdown on the official forums that someone went out of their way to poach their special snowflake name and the thread has ballooned past 25 pages.
The best way to follow official MMO forums- via proxy of someone else's sanity.

The thread is surreal, sad with the nutty overtones of people being creepy. I wish I could see the looks on the CMs faces in the morning when they come into the office and open their emails
A majority here going Dominion makes me a little sad, because they're right bastards. I do like my Disney villain looking character, though. Bah, I don't know what to do!

No MMO has even come close to the cluster-shit-fuck-storm that was the launch of Anarchy Online.
So it's a bit weird that the default UI elements are considered to be "add ons." Also a little weird that nameplates are consistently breaking for me. Anyone else having this issue?

That game did have some really cool ideas though. I miss traders.
Do you enjoy medic healing @Rorus Raz? I'd heard it was rough because you have to count on the group to be smart enough to stand close for your heals, so I was kind of turned off of it. But it just boils down that I need to get into a dungeon and see what it's like (for any role).

I ended up with an open guild reservation slot if there were any other guild names we wanted to try for.
Didn't get my first choice of name. But that doesn't surprise me being that I didn't even see the screen to enter names till 3 hours after the start. No big deal though. I got one of my second choices.

The spreadsheet doesn't have a PvP section anymore, sadly. That doesn't necessarily mean no one is interested, but as of right now there doesn't seem to be a plan for it. I thought I read before that some people were going to go PvP regardless with some friends and others were invited, though.

I wish it still had the section just so we could easier identify each other and just go to the same server.

I posted saying that my friends decided that they mostly want to run in a pvp server (Exiles), so I'm going to follow them. I'm not ecstatic about the idea, but I'll survive.
Although I don't wish our guild to be a PA-specific guild, I will post which server I end up on so that there is the possibility of a PA circle if others hang up their space-spurs around those parts.
I myself still intend to mostly focus on the pve content side of things, with only occasional forays into pvp content.
