What is Love Live exactly?
When people talk about Love Live, they are usually referring to the music group "μ's" which is a fake idol group composed fully of voice actresses/singers. It's a little like idolm@ster in that respect, and like it, it has its own anime and game on Android and iOS. They also have their own card sets in the Weiss Schwarz card game.
But THIS thread is about the rhythm game only! Story-wise, it's about a group of girls who form an idol group to compete in the Love Live competition in order to gain recognition for their under-enrolled school so that it won't be shut down. Don't worry about the story, in fact, you'll probably want to press the fast forward button on any story in the game so you can play the game.
Then what is Love Live School Idol Festival?
LLSIF is a card-collecting (with stats and levels!) rhythm game that's been out on the Japanese app stores for both Android and iOS for about a year now. You needed a JP account to play the app, which was easy on iOS, but terribly hard on Android as Google really likes their region locking. But now it's out globally I think (or at least on the US stores). Other Asian versions are forthcoming, but in this thread, we'll be talking primarily about the English version. Each version is on its own server, so you will have a different account for each version you install. It appears the English version is essentially 1 year behind the JP version, both in terms of interface and content. However, both Android and iOS are on the same server for each version.
Isn't this a F2P game? Does that mean it's going to suck a ton of money out of me?
This game is actually one of the most forgiving games as far as paying goes, assuming it follows what they've done for the JP version. The premium currency in this game is Loveca stones. You'll get a stone every few days from the daily login bonus, as long as you actually log in every day. You'll get 5 stones during any of the 9 official member's birthdays (45 stones a year). They hand out a couple stones whenever they screw up or when they reach certain milestones. You get stones from event rewards, even at the lower tiers where stones are not required. And you can easily get SR cards if you're diligent at using up your LPs during events even without using stones. So in short, if you play regularly, you should get 2 SR cards a month (the most common rarity level people's groups will be made out of after a while), and accumulate enough stones to do 11 card draws every couple months even without spending a penny.
Yes, you can waste $$$$ if you really must, but at 1% chance of UR cards, it's pretty much not worth it.
Please don't be this dude.
Or this dude.
We will point and laugh at you if you do what those guys did.
Is this game updated with new content frequently?
Yes, traditionally there are two events every month, which is when they introduce the new songs and it's also your chance at getting an SR card easily. Given this seems to be following the path of the JP version, eventually there will also be an Expert level for songs, rotating songs, and extra hard Expert mode songs, including random note placement songs during events. There will also be events where each event song is a 4P head-to-head competition and your ranking determines the points you gain towards the event.
Alright, you've convinced me, but the app store search is terrible, and I can't find the apps, link please?
It doesn't help that they removed the Love Live title from the English version, so use the links below:

That means your device is rooted, and the devs want to try to cut down on cheating as much as possible so they intentionally break it if it detects root access. You can work around this by installing SuperSU and disabling root access for the game. It should run after that.
Okay, as a veteran do you have any tips and tricks for this game?
Why, yes! (LONG)
1. As soon as you're out of the tutorial, go to settings, and issue yourself a Transfer Passcode. SAVE THIS SOMEWHERE SAFE! This code is your ONLY way of getting your account back if your device somehow dies or if you accidentally uninstall your game. It is one-time use and expires after a year. I've never tried waiting a year, but you can just use up the code on your own device and then issue a new code if it comes down to it. It will also wipe the account on your old device, so don't let anyone get ahold of it.
2. You will probably find the timing to be kind of off, which is critical in a rhythm game. On iOS, it seems I have to press late. On Android I have to press early. Luckily, there's an Adjust Timing option in the settings. After you go through the timing adjustment, you can say you don't like it and it will let you manually modify it or try again. I like to add +5-10 to whatever result I get normally based on my personal play method. Adjust as you see fit. For some examples, on my Samsung Note 2, I had -20, on my HTC M8, I have -11. On my girlfriend's iPhone, I think it was set to around +10.
3. While it's cool at first, you will eventually come to hate the girls blocking your view every time they activate a skill. Just go to settings and turn off the Live Show Pop-Ups and it'll only display some text and effects, making it much easier to play.
4. Create 3 teams, one for each color. Colors generally represent a character's strength at the type of songs, so it will make it easier to S rank songs. Characters also give a small bonus when a note lands on them if their color matches the song, so if you're using an off-color character with a good stat, you will want to stick them near the top sides so they don't receive as many notes. On really hard songs, you may want to focus having a bunch of characters with healing skills just so you can make it through initially until you get better at it.
5. Only R+ characters have skills. Generally, UR > SR > R. However, occasionally you may get promo UR/SR cards from promotions (the JP version had them packaged with various LL merchandise). They have the same skills as R cards but with better stats so they're inferior to real UR/SR cards. Unless you're just trying to collect cards, eventually you'll stop using them as you fill up with real SR+ cards.
Center skills only activate if they're in the center of the group, and they will also activate for your friends when they use you if she's set as your main group. Experienced players are more likely to accept your friend request if you use your highest rarity cards as center in your main group.
6. If you use the same color cards as fodder for the card you're trying to level up in Practice, you get a 20% bonus to the XP received.
7. If you want to level character skills, you MUST use a card with the exact same skill name under practice. You also have a 100% chance of raising the skill IF the skill of the fodder card is the same level as the card whose skill you're trying to raise. This is easy for R level skills, but you will almost be unable to raise skills to any significant level with SR/UR cards, so don't really bother trying unless you're made out of money. You'll probably get more use out of the UR/SR card by simply leveling it and using it in your groups
8. Alpacas and teachers are basically practice fodder. Alpacas can also be sold for money but you'll be swimming in money eventually so don't do that.
9. If it's like the JP version, don't do 11-card draws until they announce that they're doing the Guaranteed-at-least-one-SR+ 11-card draw. Usually these happen between events. That's the best bang for buck time for using your stones for card draws.
10. Maxing out a character's bond (only possible after evolving), will unlock a side story for them, which nets you money and a heart. So yes, even the crappy characters should be used until you max out their bonds, after that you can keep them for collection purposes or just feed them to a better card. Also it's once per unique card, so maxing a bond again on a duplicate card won't get you anything. You also want to max their level after they've evolved, as these are part of the album stats, which give you rewards at certain milestones.
Are there other resources for the game? Like a wiki?
There is, but it's for the JP version.
http://decaf.kouhi.me/lovelive/index.php?title=Main_Page It's still useful as it explains some game mechanics in detail and also has card lists, and you can also see what sort of songs and events we can look forward to in the future.
How can I help my fellow PA players with my lucky UR card draw, or just see how I compare with y'all in the rankings?

edit: Also, what do stats do? Are they just used for scoring purposes? As far as stats go, do the individual members' stats matter at all, or just the overall team stats? (That is, if a note lands on someone with 1000 smile, versus someone with 2000 smile, does that make a difference?)
Spent two hours playing already, totally late for work because of it. No regrets.
Edit: Just saw this part:
Nah I'll just get the iOS version instead.
Idolizing a card basically increases max stats cap for a card. It doesn't really matter when you do it except for one caveat. The way it works is you need two ards, Card 1 and Card 2. Card 1 is the card that will retain all its stats. Card 2 will be completely consumed. So as long as you only level 1 card, you're good.
Stats basically help with getting higher scores on songs. Early on even with a full combo you can might only get a C rank on a Normal song. Later on you could miss half the combo and still get an S rank on an Expert song. Combos are pretty important like most rhythm games. Every 50 combo you get a bonus on every note as long as you maintain that combo, and it stacks, so your score rises faster and faster the longer you can maintain the combo.

This looks like a solid backup game for when I'm out of energy in PAD, at least until BoF6 is out.

Also evolving, level maxing, bond maxing are all part of the album stats, which give you rewards at certain milestones. So basically every card deserves their time in the spotlight. After that if they're N, they can be sacrificed or collected as you see fit. Spare rare cards should be used for leveling skills. SR+ cards are basically cards you'll want to keep forever.

Also my feeling is they won't start the event till the beginning of next month. We need time to level up our cards or else none of us will be getting higher than a C or B ranking in the event songs.

Just be aware that later on when they release Expert songs, it does get legitimately hard, and if you're just using level 1 normal cards with no healing skills, forget about full comboing, you might not even survive the song. Here's one of the new songs that I can only C combo so far.

Also, later events have expert event songs with random placement of notes (the notes will always come at the same point in the song, but it will be in a random position).

My guess would be next month as well, though I bet you'd be surprised at how many people prolly can get a good rank already. If you look at current rankings, there are already people with pimped out SRs and rank30s. I'm sure in a month's time they'll beat my rank for JP LL >_<.
The short answer: take your team's combined "primary" attribute (i.e. smile for red, pure for green, cool for blue) and divide by 90. This is your "threshold" -- it's roughly how many "attribute points" the same-color bonus is worth.
For example, let's say I have a green team with about 18000 combined pure rating. 18000 / 90 = 200; this is my threshold. So let's say I have a green normal-rarity card on the team with 1500 pure, and a red rare card with 1800 pure. 1800 - 1500 is 300, so swapping in the red card would get me another 300 pure. Since 300 exceeds my threshold of 200, I should make the swap. On the other hand, if I have a blue rare card with 1650 pure, I shouldn't swap: 1650 - 1500 = 150, which is less than 200.
(Of course this is all just a rule of thumb, not a hard and fast rule. In particular, it doesn't take into effect card skills or card bond levels, both of which will favor rare cards over normal cards. Also, remember to put off-color cards near the outside of the formation, where they'll see fewer notes.)
edit: actually, screw it -- "divide by 100" is an easier rule. 90 was overly conservative anyway.
I have 2 Rare Blue Umi Sonoda Cards (#49). I leveled the first one to level 40, and maxed the bond at 100. I can't perform the Special Practice with the second card though. Am I doing something wrong, or is it possible that one card came from an Honor Student Drawing, and the second came from a Regular Student drawing. Thus not actually the same card? Both cards look identical in every way.
PROBLEM SOLVED: It appears if you have a card set as favorite, you cant use it for the Special Practice.
Also, this morning I was unable to connect at all on T-Mobile on my phone with data, but wi-fi was okay. It looks like T-Mobile set my APN to IPV6, which the game doesn't seem to like. I made a duplicate APN and it works if I set it to IPV4 or IPV4/IPV6. So if any of you encounter that, that may be the fix.

I sure hope so. I've FCd everything on Easy and Normal, but barely gotten through the songs on Hard - in fact, I still haven't survived the last song on Hard. The last long section just throws me off. I feel like I'm doing it just right, I even checked out a perfect playthrough of the song on YouTube, but NOPE. Fail, fail, fail.
