Hey everyone!

I'm trying to remember a series of books I read over 10-15 years ago. I believe it was in the fantasy genre. It takes place in a time where things are pre-technology.

People have the abilities to wield certain elements; fire, water, earth, wind and I believe something like empathy? Anyway, I think they had to go through trials together to prove their group was the best, in order to be the rulers of the land?

I remember the cover art of the books were distinctive. It was in a style that looked hand drawn and coloured. It always showcased the characters. One in each corner of the page and then one predominately in the centre showcasing their element.

I remember the 3 men were water, earth, and wind. The two women were fire and the empathy-like power. Of course the fire and water characters were a couple and earth/empathy were another couple.

Any ideas?

All I can think of now is Captain Planet.

And it seems like all is dying, and would leave the world to mourn

Probably too new, but I'm coming up with The Alchemancer series. It says 2010 though.

Couldn't they eventually combine all five of them into one 'hive mind' like entity? My friend has those on his shelf, so if I can't think of them tonight I can call him tomorrow.

Might have been Guy Gavriel Kay's Fionavar Tapestry trilogy?

Haha, Ceres as I was typing it I knew people would think Captain Planet. But no, not Captain Planet. Lord pallington, yes! I do remember they could eventually combine into one entity! I think you've probably got it. A name would be awesome. It's been bothering me for days.

Geez, it does sound like Captain Planet.
