So does the Elite suffer from the same problems as the older 360s?

Well, I can say it now.

    So, my 360 died. :x

I played geometry wars to see what would happen while playing an xbla game. about 5 minutes in the game it froze. then the screen went blank and red lights came on.

I turned it off then on and it is on now. I am gonna test it again and probably go to EB tomorrow to get a new one.

Will do. It figures this happens a week before the Halo 3 Beta. Damn you Crackdown for making me buy you!

Hopefully EB will not give me any problems and I can just exchange it. This is the day I was fearing before I even purchased my 360. Oh well, I took the risk in buying it.

So why do you guys continue to buy a console that is clearly faulty?

(as much as that may sound like me trying to a prick, I am actually curious)

two years from now is a long time, i'm willing to be these hardware failure will be fixed as they were with the ps2 a few years back

and regardless, i like live and enjoy the 360 games coming out for it. we bitch because it shouldn't happen, but that doesn't make the games any less fun

Well some of the games are good and I will admit have got me quite interested. But doesn't supporting a bad (in manufacturing wise) console just bread more products with the same issues (just like the new Elite console).

Called MS to see where the hell my 360 was. Turns out it's being delivered tomorrow. The guy said they repaired and returned the same console but I am skeptical. I don't want to pay another 50 for a two year warranty but I don't want to pay 400 for a new console either. Piece of shit hardware :(

Exactly. I am willing to put up with this crap because of Gears alone. Playing with friends that have transfered colleges or graduated makes this experience worth the pain in the ass effort it is to make it work.

Although, if my 360 breaks again, I will very much consider jumping off a bridge. I hope all of my XBLA, themes, gamer pics, etc. will still work.

For the record for all my prior posts, I am not passing judgement. If the PS3 had some problem that is dropped a pound of nuclear waist every time you used it for more then an hour I still would have bought it for MGS4. The whole 'I buy the console for the games' statement is (I think) very bloody valid and should be the only reason you buy a console. With that being said, I still don't want to buy a console that will brick in less then 6 months.

Yea, but a lot of them do.

I know three friends and a couple of Arcadians who seem to have these mystical 360's that don't break, but even still, I've heard even more stories about the console breaking. What he had to say is pretty understandable.

They're pretty loud. I have a Home Theatre PC in my lounge room, and the 360 is quite a bit louder than that.

    revolve wrote:

Yeah, not every 360 breaks, but it seems that the defect rate is certainly high enough that everybody should factor in a service plan as part of the console's price. You'd be crazy to rely on the standard 1-year warranty.

Echo: Yes, it is that loud. It's never really bothered me, except when watching some really quiet scenes on a dvd. Other than that, volume is your friend.

I have had my situation with MS support resolved.

To recap: my third 360 went in for repairs just over a month ago. Worked my way up the ladder, first dealing with the MS India contingent (CSRs and Supervisors), then a Repair and Replacement Specialist ("Manager") out of the Southern US, and finally a "Global Support Specialist." The key? Polite persistence, and respectful behaviour. Quoted all kinds of their own policies back to them (plus that Peter Moore quote that came out yesterday - the one that says, essentially, "Hey, I'm a busy guy, 36 countries and all, and people should focus on their experience, and I don't know what the failure rate is, it's a moving target.")

Blah, blah, blah... the end result?

Well, they finally got me a console. It is a refurb, but it has a manufacturing date more recent than my last console. I was able to get a full one-year warranty on the unit, a month of XBL (woohoo), and a wireless controller for my troubles.

All of this for a month without my 360.

I am so glad to have it back.... *sniff*

Quick FYI - as long as your unit is still under warranty, for US$20, you can purchase an additional year of coverage. I was told this by the R&R Specialist. So, if you are concerned, $20 seems a lot more reasonable than $140 for an out of warranty repair.

(My apologies to those who are already out of warranty)

Lies, I bought one last night for 30.

From a guy that sold me one even though my xbox was OUT of warranty.

Which ended up hilarious, because I got to confuse an indian man that told me I couldn't extend something I didn't have. To which I replied "But I already did!"

Now I have a 1 year warranty, and am getting mine repaired. Kickass.

Huh. Then you either got ripped off 10 bucks, or my repair and replacement specialist was full of crap. I have his number, I'll give hima call, and see what he has to say about this.

Perhaps there's a $10 charge for an out of warranty waranty? That doesn't make a lot of sense.

In any event, I do know that because I have a recorded conversation with a quote for $20, that's what I'll be paying, sucka.

EDIT: Forgot: Congrats on the repair!

So I think we all agree... had Gears not come out and if Halo 3 wasn't an MS title there would be some fringe support for the 360 for other "staple" titles but people would be kicking down Microsoft's door (with harder kicks).

But you're pretty much saying if the console didn't have any good games, it wouldn't be worth it at all. Which applies to any console and is kind of a weird point.

Here's what I don't get: didn't Sony get sued for the technical hardware issues revolving around the PS2? Or, was that a result of them not offering some sort of warranty service or something? I really don't know, I just remember reading about a class action against Sony a while ago.

I might add, I seem to be one of the lucky few that only ever needed a single PS1, and only had two PS2s because I eventually got a slim. My PS2 gave me fairly frequent, maybe once-a-month DREs that were all resolved with a cleaning disc. Hell, it became a ritual, but it kept me playing.

So what are the chances of me buying a 360 and then it gets the 3 red lights of doom as soon as I play them?

And whats this about ventilation? My PS2 and GC are in my room but not anywhere near any vents or windows (well the vent is on the other side of my room). So do I have to move my whole gaming area so the 360 doesn't heat up?

Well, no, 6 months, more or less, if it does break.

More ventilation means just keep it in an area with some room. Like, at least, 4-5 inches from all sides.

    No no... not quite.

I hate to use the words "AAA title" but they don't universally imply "good games".

I'm saying Gears came out just in time and it pretty much saved Microsoft from the wolves. Now that there's some focus on hardware failures on the 360 Microsoft is lucky yet again to be saved by Halo 3 and to a lesser extent Forza 2.

Also people forgave the 360 for a year because there was "nothing else"

    It's really quite fascinating

If Gears was never a game though the 360 would not have that "i'm cool" schoolyard fanboy buzz that you know is going on with teenagers.

So I have to basically center it? That seems a little werid as my PS2 is like near a shelf but has breathing room and my GC is mean my laundry hamper.

I tend to move my PS2/GC it around (both while on and off, but mostly off) as I like either to lie on the bed or sit up on the bed while I play. Will it be a problem if I move it both while on and off or will it scratch the disk?

No you don't have to move your 360 unless you plan on playing it wrapped in a rug. The 360 failure rate out of the box seems very low. It's the 6 month mark and later that a lot of people are having problems with. It's still under warranty, but still annoying. Compared to the PS2 or PS1 I have no idea what the failure rate is. They are both probably not very favorable.

From most reports, keeping it on carpet is a bad idea.

Really, all three of the current-gen consoles have heat considerations and need space in a way the last gen didn't.
