Well, yea I agree, if you put it that way.

But you're pretty much saying if the console didn't have any good games, it wouldn't be worth it at all. Which applies to any console and is kind of a weird point.
    No no... not quite.

I hate to use the words "AAA title" but they don't universally imply "good games".

I'm saying Gears came out just in time and it pretty much saved Microsoft from the wolves. Now that there's some focus on hardware failures on the 360 Microsoft is lucky yet again to be saved by Halo 3 and to a lesser extent Forza 2.

Also people forgave the 360 for a year because there was "nothing else"

    It's really quite fascinating

If Gears was never a game though the 360 would not have that "i'm cool" schoolyard fanboy buzz that you know is going on with teenagers.

    Eh

I'm guessing your point is that, if those two games didn't come out, it'll be much harder to forgive the system faults. Yes, well, that's a given.

Though, that's somewhat of a slipper slope there.

Hey, if the Wii didn't have Zelda and Mario or the PS3 didn't have FFXIII and MGS4, they wouldn't really be much. Leading to more grievances.

But they have them. So it's moot.

Though the 360 (or at least, a whole bunch of them) does has shitty hardware and that's more of an incentive to give it up. I can agree with that.

katchem, you don't ever put systems on a carpet. it's just generally bad. a wooden plan would work because my friend does the exact same thing

I have a PS2 and a GC on the carpet and (knock wood) nothing has happened. My brother has a PS2 launch system which has worked (knock wood) for all these years on the carpet and never broke.

I guess the new gen systems must be out only one at a time instead of 2, like my PS2 and GC.

It's just a risk to put it on the carpet. It doesn't always brick systems.

If you want to do it, go ahead.

You always have a one year warranty if anything.

I owned a Dreamcast and I put it on the carpet and the Modem stoped working (so I got a replacement one free of charge from Sega). This however was my only problem with a console ever.

I have owned 2 PS2s (I got the slim line for the modem and sold the older one) and a gamecube and now I own a PS3 and a Wii and with all the 'new gen' systems I have ever owned I have never once had a problem. I have had one friend who broke his PS2 by claiming that it just stop working one day (turned out he modded it) and I have had 3 friends who had X-Box units magically stop working.

Well no, I was speaking of my knowledge with some consoles I have had.

The PS2 never had wide spread reports of consoles just dyeing, as far as I know the original run did have some issues that were hit or miss with some people. The 360 has now gone past it's original run and we are breaking in to a whole new version of the console and the issues persist. There is something very very fucking wrong with that happening, it would seem that Microsoft is avoiding the problem to ensure the death of the console so that consumers would have to buy the next generation console due to there older Xboxs not working.

I don't put any computers or game consoles after the PS1 on carpet. I prefer to keep them out of the "dust zone" which is about 2-3 feet off the ground.

No, the PS2 had many problems. A major lawsuit happened because of it. The slimline is near-perfect as far as I'm concerned, however.

The Xbox had the same problem for its first year and a half until they replaced the disc drive to a samsung and hitachi brand.

One thing though, Microsoft is probably raking in money with all these extended warranty purchases. Hopefully they fix the problems when the more efficient cpu hits this fall. They are doing a terrible job with this problem, so far.

More efficient repairing and better warranty deals shouldn't be a substitute to fixing the overall hardware altogether.

There were issues with both the PS1 and PS2 and their power supplies generating too much heat on components nearby.

Yah after reading this thread I took my 360 up off the carpet and put two small pieces of wood underneath each edge, so its about 1.5-2 inches off the ground now.

My Wii is on the carpet, but its in its little stand thingy so it should be ok. I really should turn off WiiConnect 24 though.

I find myself wanting to play certain games that eventually would have been on the Wii or PS3, but because of the 360 early entrance into the market 'we consumers' gave it some ground. Now developers will start making games for 'next gen' with the 360 in mind on it's hardware. Everyone here can claim the console is not faulty but we all bloody well know it is. I have not talked to one person in real life who owns an Xbox 360 who has not had issues and these forums appear to have few who have not suffered any issues. Peter Moore himself continues to state that the failures are a moving number and I can only assume that it is getting higher and higher as the age of the consoles increases. If they had nothing to hide they would have shown us numbers clearly stating that the hardware is not faulty. Yes, you can get your replacement console now and for a while that will be okay but you will eventually have to face the fact that your warranty will die out.

This kills me... I fucking want to own Dead Rising and I refuse to buy something as unstable as the 360...

Again Vicious, previous consoles had these problems and yet, they were still supported and some even turned out to be a complete success.

Does that make this okay? No, but that's just how things work out. What matters is what they end up bringing to the table and, as of now, it is pretty damn good.

You are assuming this problem will last forever. I'm willing to bet it doesn't.

Mine magically dies after being just a few weeks outside the warranty.
It sucks so much I have never ever had a console problem!
Did the towel trick and got it to work for a few minutes. It crashed again.

I toweled it again for over an hour and even had that cooked board/metallic smell and let it cool.
It actually played games perfectly afterward but I turned off the system to avoid risking it dying again.
Right now I have it lying in a bag awaiting word of an available 360 Elite so I can do the upgrade trade...

I havent seen this written yet but has anyone found out or posted the exact price for the extended warranty? Im trying to decide wether the upgrade is worth it or if should just get a warranty swap.
My TV is a 32 in. that handles 1080i so HDMI is a moot point for me, and the HDD sounds nice but again is it really necessary for someone that already has the system? I am well aware it brings the component cables and my friend keeps telling me to upgrade that I can't lose with it but w/e its a long wait either way!

I bought the two year warranty for $60 last summer. Half the price for a single year, obviously.

The price has been confirmed to still be the same by SniperGuy. If you really want an elite, go for it. It doesn't seem like you do though.

Thanks! I have about $50 credit plus the $250 the system would net me. It's basically coming down to 179.99 vs 30~60 for the extended. Or better said im paying for the new HDD or getting new warranty. My TV has HDMI ports but only goes to 1080i. Everything else about the system is the same, so I think Im gonna save me some money.

Is MS charging for the shipping and if so how much? I think I would fight it since the warranty should cover my loss!

Thanks for all the help man:P
Someone had mentioned that they had been charging for it and I wasn't sure.

My friend had to go through this last year in May.
His warranty was still active back then though.

I called last night after receiving my 360 since no Free Live was in the box eventhough I have a letter saying "Here is a free Live Card". anyway it turns out that according to my case no console was shipped to me and I should not have received one. They will call me back tonight after they contact the repair center.

As it stands I've waited 1 month and got a refurb. Now MS is going to try and find out what happened with my console.

Well they had created a new case ID which is why the operator was confused. Now as for the missing card for xbox live all I can say is INCOMPETANCE INCOMPETANCE INCOMPETANCE. Also talking to them about their new warranty policy will yield no result, they don't seem to know anything about it and repeatedly said it's a US policy eventhough xbox.ca points to the same page. It should not have taken 1 month. I am calling billing now to talk to them. My next step will be e-mail with a scan of the letter.

edit: Do not call french support, things will go badly. I was transferred to english support and my case was escalated immediately and all errors in the case notes were corrected. They also know policy. But now I have a new call set up with the french support center since they created the problem I need to deal with their supervisors.

Looks like I'm going to hold onto my 360 for now since I want to try out the Halo 3 beta.

The disc drive is hit or miss, but it should work for the time I want it. I'll see if I can extend the one month "hold" for the coffin. I'll call them up and see if that's possible.

I finally got the box to ship my 360 today, nine days after making the initial repair order. It is going to some place on Don Mills zerocount, so maybe they have stopped using the location that gave you so much trouble.

Edit: brought the box to Puralator and there was another guy in there bringing in his 360! It's crazy how unreliable these things are. Wouldn't suprise me at all to hear that the failure rate is > 25%. I'm starting to believe that until they redesign the internals everybody is living on borrowed time.

The failure rate is the deciding factor for you, eh? You do know Microsoft (an American company) makes the 360 right? Any JRPGs that appear on the 360 are likely either not worth owning or destined to appear on the superior PS3. I think you should buy a PS3. Made by Sony. PS3. Japan.

Do you know any details on what exactly will they fix? I thought the Elite that came out recently (Did it? I am unsure about this) fixed this problem. Also is it a revision for sure or will it be a repackaged system with supposed "new" features?

The new CPU is smaller, more efficient, and will result in a cooler running 360. It won't be in 360's until Fall.

The Elite is a regular black 360 with more HD space.
