So, my game froze once the night before playing Two Worlds and tonight 2 times playing the same game, the beginning of the end? Haven't even had my console one year, I got it at Christmas. Also, it dying right now is pretty much horrible. Halo 3 is so close and I most likely won't get it back before then will I?

Minor note, I think you mean one year as there were no "great" games in the first year of the 360.

    Project Gotham Racing 3
    Geometry Wars
    Oblivion
    Dead Rising
    Gears of War

all say you are wrong, amongst others.

Fraggle, I'm not going to call you an idiot or anything, but I'm a bit surprised at what you find to be acceptable.

I'm glad that you had the foresight to (presumably) purchase the extended warranty for the 360. Thus, when it broke, it barely put you out at all. However, I don't tend to buy extended warranties, on the principle that, at least with electronics, if it doesn't break right away, it should last damn well near forever.

And, of course, the extra cost. The extended warranty is, what, something like 50-100 bucks, right?

No, I just got a £1.79 a month "no quibble" store insurance plan to swap the unit in the case of failure.

Years of PC gaming taught me to buy hardware protection, unfortunately, not to mention other consoles I've owned. I'll be doing the same thing when I get a Wii/PS3.

I have no real problem with the red ring thing. The shitty, shitty DRM issues, on the other hand... :v:

    But ... that's, what, ~3 US dollars/month x 24 months = 72 dollars for insurance?

If I were you, I'd be PLEASED by the red ring thing. Not that your 360 broke, but that 360's in general are breaking at record pace. Because, in the end, it really justifies your insurance, right? And not only the insurance on the 360, but all of the insurance that you've ever bought. I mean, if you keep up with the plan, you may end up getting like 4-5 360's for 3 bucks/month ;) That's how I'd be thinking, anyways ...

I've never bought insurance on a console ... and have never had one break on me, until now. Of course, I never had a PS2, either, which I hear were pretty prone to breakage.

I got my 360 for Xmas, so I can't complain TOO much. And I've had a ton of fun playing my 360 over the past several months. GoW was potentially the most fun playing a console game that I've ever had (Live Coop FTW).

But at this point, considering the poor reliability, and the continuing hardware problems (i.e. my refurb will also likely break at some point) ... if I had to do it all over again, I think I'd either:

    -Get a PS3, or
-Hold off on the 360 until the new chipsets are out

Option 2 was actually my plan all along, but Xmas gifts are Xmas gifts ... :)

So I noticed that my refurbished 360 from MS ran really hot, even after only like 10-15 minutes of being on. So I propped it up on two DK Bongos (one on each side), so it's got a lot of room to breathe on every side (used to be flat on a wood surface) and now it's not just cooler, it's quieter too.

So my 360 Elite has to go in for repairs because the DVD drive is apparently all sorts of fucked, unless scratching discs with a horrible grinding noise with the power of a thousand tiny gods is what owning an Elite is all about. I've only had the fucking thing for four months.

That's one thing I find silly about the US returns.

In Australia they just email you a prepaid address thingie that you just print out whack on a box and you pop the xbox in.

Waiting just for a coffin to show up seems to be another step in an already excesivly long process.

Okay this is really weird. They recieved my xbox yesterday and I checked the servive website today and I get this:

    * Device: Xbox360 Hardware
    * Serial Number: 016479509999
    * Warranty Status: Out of Warranty

    # Repair Status: No pending repair
The thing is, that is NOT my SN. It was a different SN on there the other day, ending in 2006, I even have my EB receipt with the correct SN on it, only, it is written in pen, since I bought the EB warranty with it, it died the first few days,I took the unit to EB and they gave me a new one and just wrote down the SN on the receipt, but the SN on the service website isn't my old SN either, so WTF do I do?

Edit: Also, since they received my box on monday, is there a possibility it will be back before Halo 3? I mean, everybodys is going to be playing it, and I don't wanna be the one guy not drinking the juice

The coffin generally takes 2-3 business days to arrive. It's really not that bad.

You don't need your own box and you can be sure it's packed properly because all the packing materials come with it and the box is perfectly sized for it to never bounce around, requiring no effort on your part.

And excessively long in this case means about week for the repair with 4 days of shipping. It's not that long either.

I'll give you Gears since it was released 15 days before the 360's 1 year birthday. Now the rest of those I only consider good games. Yes semantics I know but we all have our opinions. What ruins some of those games is that the PC versions are/will be better and cheaper. Dead Rising, sorry but I have Resident Evil 4. I'm not into raceing games and geometry wars doesn't interest me either. Oblivion is better on the PS3 and best on the PC. As for Gears the PC version will have much more content. I decided to wait on that game since my 360 was already dying and I'm glad I did.

I started gameing on the PC and started playing both PC & console games when the NES came out. I play games on everything, but PC comes first as they are usually the best version. I have a strong enough pc for most games and now the PS3 is strong enough to truely bridge PC & console gameing with nice little tid bits like Unreal using K&M controls and letting PS3 & PC users play each other over the network.
Years of PC gaming taught me to buy hardware protection, unfortunately, not to mention other consoles I've owned. I'll be doing the same thing when I get a Wii/PS3.

Writing off Dead Rising because you have resident evil is possibly one of the more ignorant things I have seen here.

It's like saying you don't want to play Metroid because you already have a Guilty Fucking Gear in it and you fire weapons in that too.

They are two completely different games and should not be compared. It's like comparing Call of Duty to Red Alert.

I didn't write off DR and RE4 is not "Resident Evil" as most RE games suck. Now one game has zombies while the other has zombie like people. In both games you kill zombies/zombie like persons. One is just about fun-time killing with a bit of plot and is really just Dawn of the Dead the game. The other redefined a series, had a strong plot, great voice actors, incredible graphics, and a lot of replay especially if the you the PS2 or Wii version. I have the GC version and my bro bought the Wii version.

I'm not saying Dead Rising is a bad game far from it, it just lacks substance. So I feel there are better Zombie games out there. Now despite that I still want to play Dead Rising among other titles but my 360 is now dead. And by the way, your comparison of Metroid and Guilty Gear was weak, lucky for me my brain is still working just enough to get the point you were trying to make. At least Dead Rising and RE4 are both Zombie games. So in the mean times I'm glad I got Bioshock for the PC until my brother finds our warranty info as I will not wait on MS for a useless refurb that we'll ROD the day we get it.

Yes my link was weak, luckily, you, the paragon of intellectual intelligence managed to nut out the hidden connection between these two mysterious ideals after I explicitly state the connection.

They are two completely different games, the only thing they have in common is fucking Zombies. They have different controls, treat zombies differently and have compeltely different gameplay mechanics. If you want to say it lacks substance, go find Stale who's played it through a dozen times.

If your serial number or warranty status changes, one of two things is happening:

    1) service.xbox.com has been flaky and weird for a couple of days. Refresh a couple times and see if your correct information comes up

    2) your console is not worth repairing, so you're being sent a new one

and what the hell is up with the console wars and game fanboyism all over a thread about hardware failure?

Last week, I've sent my 6th, yeah 6th xbox 360 for repair. After the 5th one, Microsoft sent me a brand new one which lasted.... *drum rolls* 4 months.

While I want to say," Man that is some shitty luck." I also have to wonder how you keep your 360s. Do you place them in a small cubby or something or an oven? Because really.....wow.

No, I do not believe that the area where I place my xbox 360 is the issue. My computer, is in a far worst situation (even close door in the front) and it won't have issues.

No my 360 is indeed on my TV desk, the back of the desk is completly open, making sure that the hot air being extracted from the 360 is being push outsite of the 360 area. While in use, if you pass your hand around the 360, you do not feel any real hot air difference compare to the rest of the room. I doubt the area where I place my 360 is the cause of my misery. I understand the question though but trust me, I made sure it wasn't an overheating environement..

Well, that's just, like, your opinion, man. But you know what? I couldn't care less about Halo, yet here I am wondering, in the month Halo 3 comes out, when I'm gonna have the time to finish playing everything I want (BioShock, Stranglehold, Forza 2, DiRT, skate.) before PGR4 comes out.

And speaking of PGR, "I don't like raceing [sic] games" means (a) jack and (b) shit when it comes to determining whether PGR3 is a good launch title to the general 360 audience. Speaking as someone who does like racing games, it was digital crack and actually justified my launch purchase for at least two months. I don't like JRPGs but I sure as shit ain't gonna say that FFVII wasn't a system seller.

    Agreed.

I've been reading this thread since the beginning and have been adjusting my 360 to extends it's life based on peoples examples of death.

This is my second 360, after the first one (first gen) gave me three rings after about 16 months of hard core use. And it went straight to Egay with a full explination of details. Sold two days before MS official announcement but after over priced shipping I only forked over $54 for a brand new one. Well worth the price of the pending hassle that would have been before me.

Did I purchase any insurance? I said no. But only due to the fact of, I feel, I'm one of the lucky ones. Who if my breaks today, I could afford to go buy another one and not give two winces about it. I would chalk it up to I'll always have a back up after MS repairs my original.

Exactly the same reason I bought a second OG Xbox at KMart about 6 months ago. Because all hardware breaks eventually. It just depends on how important that hardware is to you.

Which brings me to a question. How many Xbox 360 owners are still disatisfied about owning a 360? Meaning knowing what you know now would you buy it all over again?

Well, in canada, and you can check on website like www.futureshop.ca, a premium xbox 360 goes for about 400$. If you factor in taxes, it gets you to around 450$. So 450$ *6 xbox 360 and you get something close to 3000$ (actually, 2700$).

As for repair, I believe the price is somewhere between 100$ and 150$ If you take the later, with 6 xbox 360, you get around 900$ in repair fees.

That would be a very hard question to answers. Features wise, the Xbox 360 is still, in my opinion, the best console available. Game Library wise, the Xbox 360 is still the best console to own for gaming right now.

Hardware wise, technically, it's an amazing machine.

Reliability wise: It's the worst piece of hardware ever built. This is the first time, in my entire life, that I had to get an electronic device to be repaired so often, and this within the span of 12 months. In an average, each xbox 360 lasted me 2 months.

Will I drop the ball on xbox 360. It's very, very temping, but the game library currently is saving Microsoft in my view right now. If they didn't have all those great games coming to their platform, I wouldn't be here still waiting on my 6th xbox 360. If the 360 had the PS3 or Wii library of games, I wouldn't still be a xbox 360 owner...

But there are days I wish I never bought one...

Since all 360s are covered for the RRoD, and if you pay for any repair on anything else you get a year warranty, the most anyone should've payed for is one repair. (since the 360's been out less than 2 years)

But if your retarded math and scenarios make you happy, by all means continue.

Which brings me to a question. How many Xbox 360 owners are still disatisfied about owning a 360? Meaning knowing what you know now would you buy it all over again?

I, for one, am still very happy with my 360, even though it failed once and I had no idea of the hardware troubles when I bought it.

No, would not do again. If I had known that I would be locked into the embrace of a console with a lifespan of somewhere under 1 year, going on 3 weeks of waiting for the repair, I would've gotten a PS3, for 100 dollars more. I've already bought a bunch of games. So let's see ... in a couple years, after the warranty deal is up .. how much longer can i expect the 360 to last, for all these games?

The thing is, I'm still kind of wanting a PS3, but it's really hard to justify, considering that most of it's library of good games will be available on the 360 only.

But if I had to pick only one, right now? PS3.

I'm afraid that when I get the 360 back, I'm still going to be afraid that it might up and die at any moment ... and that sucks.

Im buying a 360 at the very latest november 30th. Ill grab myself a years XBL subscription for 50.. and then a warranty!! What do they offer? A year for..? Two for..? Any incentive to wait a few months for improved hardware? That sort of thing...

The warranty the 360 comes with from Microsoft is one year for any problems, but if your console suffers the Red Ring of Death, your 360 will be covered by warranty for 3 years (and it seems to be the most common cause of console failure). And that's all free and automatic with your console purchase.

If you do have to have Microsoft fix or replace your console, it will be about a week and a half to two weeks before you get your console back. If that's acceptable, I don't see much reason to purchase a warranty from a store or anything, but that's just me.

So, my roommates 360 got the Red Eye of Death yesterday, stalling my anticipated weekend Bioshock marathon. He deploys in a month and says he doesn't want to hassle with sending it in to get fixed, as he doesn't believe it will be back in time. From what I've read of the thread, the towel trick works? We are willing to give it a go.

EDIT I guess my real question is, will trying it void the warranty? In case he changes his mind later.

Will purposefully blocking off all air flow and leaving it running in hopes that your broken console will work void the warranty? I think MS might not look kindly on that if they found out you did it. It might be, you know, abuse.

And from what I've heard, it only works for short stints anyway.

If he's deploying in a month, if he calls MS now, it will definitely be back before he has to leave.
