I've heard both that pointing a fan at my 360 to keep it cool is a bad idea and a good idea.
Can anyone confirm either way? I need to cool it down every way I can come my Halo marathon on the 25th.
Well, I doubt it would be a good idea to point it at the back, anyway. The 360 draws air in from the top and bottom and blows it out the back. Were you to blow the air back into the back of the 360, you'd be ruining the airflow that its fans are achieving.
You could try the top or bottom, though (sides if it's verticle).

Yeah, I would point it at the side it takes air in through.

It probably won't hurt, then.
Also, if you opened your 360 up and pointed a fan at its innards, you would probably achieve a good cooling effect. Your warranty would not agree it's a good idea, however.
Im buying a 360 at the very latest november 30th. Ill grab myself a years XBL subscription for 50.. and then a warranty!! What do they offer? A year for..? Two for..? Any incentive to wait a few months for improved hardware? That sort of thing...
The warranty the 360 comes with from Microsoft is one year for any problems, but if your console suffers the Red Ring of Death, your 360 will be covered by warranty for 3 years (and it seems to be the most common cause of console failure). And that's all free and automatic with your console purchase.
If you do have to have Microsoft fix or replace your console, it will be about a week and a half to two weeks before you get your console back. If that's acceptable, I don't see much reason to purchase a warranty from a store or anything, but that's just me.
Nope, not even close to 1.5 - 2 weeks. When I called them, they were quoting 3-4 weeks, and think that's closer to the target.
I sent mine back 3 weeks ago, and the latest update was that they sent it back. Presuming it comes early next week, including the time that it took to GET the empty box to send back, we're looking at probably 3.5-4.5 weeks, which kind of sucks.
Well, we did the "towel trick" and the 360 started running again ... with a difference. When you play Bioshock the colors are "off", for example things that where a blue-green like EVE hypos are now a dark blue. I'm hoping it just needs to cool down more or some color settings got changed somehow. The XBOX dashboard seems the same. Weird, but I guess that's what happens when you stress the machine.

Maybe Microsoft hates you. To get my coffin took me two days, shipping it back to them took six days for some reason, and they had it for 3 days. Shipping it back to me took another two days. If everything had gone well with UPS, I would have had it gone for little more than a week.

That has only ever been a temporary fix. Your 360 is still broken you know
Or you could be a man and fix it yourself with new thermal paste, I'll see if I can dig up the tutorial somewhere. It has to do with reballing something too, not too familiar with it.
I didn't try, because apparently I don't have enough balls.
Well my 360 finally packed it in after a long and painful death. I think I was playing Halo 2 co-op the night before Bioshock was released and a power failure shut the entire house down for a minute or two. Boot it back up and get the RoD, swearing, and cursing the gods ensued. For some reason though I unplugged the power, plugged it back in, and it worked. So I managed to beat Bioshock... then a few days later it just started freezing a couple minutes into any game, sometimes when it started up, and every time I tried to play music. But it still let me stream video... so... I had that I guess for a while but it finally RoD'd permanently a couple days ago.
Anyway, when I phoned up Microsoft about it I have to say I was impressed with the customer service. Basically the complete opposite from the times I've had to call in and get them to activate Windows. But I forgot to mention that my 360 was having disk reading issues where it thinks a game is a movie. Should I call them up and get them to add that to my current repair?
Well my problem tended to be I'd play something like Gears and then switch over to Dead Rising and it'd think it was a DVD. Usually I'd have to power cycle detach everything and then spend a couples minutes trying to coax it into playing the game. Seemed to be entirely tied to Gears, Dead Rising, Lost Planet, and to a lesser extent DOA4. I guess it really hated those Capcom games because it happened the most with them.
I have an airconditioned room and the vent is right next to me pc so what i did was i moved my xbox and placed it standing on top of the vent. So the cold air rides up through my 360 and then out into my room.
Is this okay? Anyone against this idea?

Well, it won't hurt it, unless its at risk of falling. The idea is to make sure the console has plenty of breathing room, so it is not recycling air it just pushed out (as it would in an enclosed rack.) You can improve upon that by placing it an area that is generally cooler, and using a fan to draw away the hot air that the console pushes out. The console won't take in air any faster than its capable of, so pointing a fan at the console is pointless. Cooling the atmosphere around the console and getting the hot exhaust away from the console are more effective.
Also, position the console horizontally, because when standing vertically, you are blocking the most efficient path for air flow. The bottom (when standing) is where the console draws in most of its air.
So my repair status has been "Device Received at Service Center" since the 12th. Is this normal? I just want to play Bioshock again... must complete hard mode!

It can take about a week. Sometimes less, sometimes longer. If you're worried, you can always call up MS's support and give them your service ID number.

my 360 recently died, and I assisted it by playing Oblivion with all the downloadable content.
It had a DERP moment, and then quietly died. I will get it back exactly 1 week before Halo3.
Someone, please, tell me that the new heat sink and associated fixes work.
Just tell me that. Please. I can't risk the strain on my heart to fire it up with Halo inside and have it die.

I might have a conniption fit.
Well, I don't know if the new heatsinks and stuff work long-term, but my 360 has the new heatsinks and it has fewer problems than my old 360 and I know a guy named Nailbunny who you probably have never seen post has a refurb with the new heatsinks and it has lasted more than two months or something like that, I don't know.
It's anecdotal and only two people, obviously, but the increase in heat pouring out the back of my console is quite noticeable and quite probably a good thing. Also, it's not broken. My old 360 was broken. This one is not broken.

I posted like 3 posts up about cooling/air flow. Also, I do not have the new heatsink. I just never shut my console off since I got the refurb. I think its been about 3 months. It was the beginning of summer when the Crackdown/Halo 3 beta was going on.

Well, fine. And the you not posting thing was a joke. Stop being so serious. God.
So I got my Halo Xbox 360 and it has a manufactured date of 8/7/07. Is there a way to tell by serial number or something if its a Zephyr or a Falcon?
btw, Viva Pinata is horribly addicting. It keeps taking me away from zombie killing.
Viva Pinata is fucking awesome/frustrating. My pinatas wouldn't stop fighting, like for god's sake, stop it already. It was easier to just kill one of them than to heal them, cheaper too.
It was so frustrating, I wasn't surprised my 360 gave up on me (I was playing Viva Pinata).
There's a sticker on the side of the box. Somewhere on there it will say Zephyr or Falcon.
Cool, I'll check that out when I get home from work tonight.

Received my refurbished 360 last night. Manufacturing date is in 2006/08/23 .From what I can tell, It has the new Heat Sink inside. Hopefully, this means that #6 will be the good one this time.
Happy to see I might not miss the Halo 3 launch after all.

I looked all over the thing and couldn't find mention of either Zephyr or Falcon. I do know that it was manufactured on 8/7/07 and that engagdet reported that the falcons went into production in late July/early august. The thing runs pretty damn cool. After nearly 16 hours of straight game play when I first got it the thing was just slightly warm to the touch. Much cooler than my Wii runs.
I guess if you want a close-to-guaranteed-but-not-guarenteed Falcon, get the Halo 360.
The video out on my 360 died and there's nothing I can do other than send it in for repair. I tried different video cables, I plugged it in to different inputs on my TV... nothing. I can hear the regular sounds it makes through my TV's speakers when it boots up, but all I get on the screen is a grid of white boxes and then nothing but black.
The level one tech that I got Monday night was incompetent and couldn't figure out how to spell my address even when I spelled it out letter by letter. After 45 minutes on the phone, he tells me that it will be 3-4 weeks before I get my console back. I called bullshit and tried to get transferred to a supervisor, but he wouldn't have any of that.
So I called back on Tuesday...
The level one tech that I got Tuesday morning was no better, but she did transfer me to a supervisor after 30 minutes of me being firm (but nice) about how 3-4 weeks is completely unacceptable. Her supervisor, "Mike," repeated the same line, but did compensate me with a free month of Xbox Live (I'm sure this is standard).
So now I'm waiting for my pre-paid FedEx box. Looks like there won't be Halo 3 at launch or COD4 beta for me :x

You do realize they always say it will take that long or longer, right? They told me 4-6 weeks. And, apparently, they tell everyone that. And it still usually only takes a week.

Mine gave up the ghost for the first time this weekend. No more Bioshock/Street Fighter II (XBLA) for how long?
really depressing.
