My 360 has been acting wonky the last couple weeks. About 9 out of 10 times when I turn it on for the first time that day either:
a) nothing happens except the power light coming on
b) The 360 logo comes up but all glitched out and then it freezes
c) Error code E74 with player 4 light red.
All I have to do is power it off and then turn it back on and it works like a charm.
I haven't called tech support on it yet because it's not too big of a deal and I want to play Halo 3 for a little while before having to send it in.
Hopefully my bad luck doesn't continue and H3 doesn't kill my system again. My first 360 RRoD'd just a couple days after the Halo 3 beta began..
The video out on my 360 died and there's nothing I can do other than send it in for repair. I tried different video cables, I plugged it in to different inputs on my TV... nothing. I can hear the regular sounds it makes through my TV's speakers when it boots up, but all I get on the screen is a grid of white boxes and then nothing but black.
Exactly what happened to me, and I had to pay for repair.
But they got the system back to me fairly quickly. It's a unit manufactured in Summer of 2006. It sucks, because while I now have a new 1 year warranty, my last unit died about 16-18 months in.
So, yeah, when this one fails on me, I think I'll get a unit with HDMI.

The level one tech that I got Monday night was incompetent and couldn't figure out how to spell my address even when I spelled it out letter by letter. After 45 minutes on the phone, he tells me that it will be 3-4 weeks before I get my console back. I called bullshit and tried to get transferred to a supervisor, but he wouldn't have any of that.
So I called back on Tuesday...
The level one tech that I got Tuesday morning was no better, but she did transfer me to a supervisor after 30 minutes of me being firm (but nice) about how 3-4 weeks is completely unacceptable. Her supervisor, "Mike," repeated the same line, but did compensate me with a free month of Xbox Live (I'm sure this is standard).
So now I'm waiting for my pre-paid FedEx box. Looks like there won't be Halo 3 at launch or COD4 beta for me :x
You do realize they always say it will take that long or longer, right? They told me 4-6 weeks. And, apparently, they tell everyone that. And it still usually only takes a week.
You were making a big deal out of nothing.
They told me 2 - 3 weeks, I called on Sept 4th. status as of yesterday was 'Console Received' and now the site is down for maintenance. and the free month of live.... yeah they gave me that to w/o asking for a sup. Not necessarily making a big deal out of nothing, it seems that they are a bit choked at this time.

In the grand scheme of things, no, it's not a big deal. I'm fully aware that it is a video game console and not the cure for AIDS. I'm just frustrated that it decided to crap out on me right now; right before Halo 3, right during the COD4 beta, and there's no chance I'll get a fixed system before Tuesday unless I go out and buy one.
I'll live and the world will keep spinning, but that doesn't mean I can't be frustrated with the situation.
There's a sticker on the side of the box. Somewhere on there it will say Zephyr or Falcon.
Cool, I'll check that out when I get home from work tonight.
So, Zephyr is the new mother board, which is in the new XBOXs with HDMI out. It can take the 90nm or the 65nm falcon chipset.
In other news, my XBOX got the red ring of death on 9/1/07.
Requested a ticket, they said they would send me an email with further instructions.
No email for 3 days, so I called.
Could barely understand every 3rd word the person on the other side of the world said, but I got a box to ship my XBOX in.
Days later. . . I go to check the status again. The serial number I registered has changed and it says that it is not in repair and that there is no warrenty. wtf.
Log in today to see if it has changed, I now have no xbox registered and when I go to reregister it throws an error. I think Microsoft stole my broken XBOX. Fuckers.

Makes it difficult for someone wanting one to get one. >_> I know most problems with them have beer or are being resolved. One thing for sure...
I'll get the extended warranty.
That, and make sure on the sticker on the box, where the serial number and other bar codes are, that you can read the word "FALCON" which means you would have the newest chipset revision (65nm) which runs cooler and will avoid you hours of pain hopefully...
If I had to buy another one now, I'd absolutlely would get a falcon or nothing...
There's so much rumor on these 65n chip that I can't see taking someone's suggestion from a messageboard on whether the chips are on shelves yet. Also, they have not changed the GPU yet.
If you are waiting for the new CPU revisions, wait until images start popping up online as proof.
Ouch. I am on number 4, and it looks like I will soon be headed for number 5. A lot of hard lock-ups, and some interesting noises/features with the DVD drive. By "noises," I mean a strange, brief, grinding noise at startup (no disc scratches), and weird clicking noises when I get DDEs (which I am super unhappy with, having lost a lot of progress in a number of games). By "features," I mean that it occaisionally won't close... at all... looks like the gearing/track for the open/close mechanism is faulty. It does work from time time, but mostly, it's a coordinated "close tray" and me pushing it in.
I am reading alot about the timelines people are looking at for replacements, and since it's been a while since I had a problem, I thought I'd look at the support page to see if the "Warranty and Service Enhancements" page was still there. If you recall, it was the one that purported to provide us with better customer service, "customer service champions," and the "once we have received your console, we will repair and ship it back within five days" guarantee.
Guess what? I couldn't find that page anymore...
So, now that they've given up, I have to hang on to my struggling 360 so I don't miss the Halo 3 launch (because, you know, I won't miss it)... but it looks like the majority of folks are talking about a 3-4 week return window. That just plain sucks.
my 360 was working fine for over a year, with only a minor load error here and there. but the day that i got NHL 08 all hell broke loose. unreadable disc errors, coupled with my cd tray would not eject. so now, after almost an hour on the phone with a HORRIBLE level one tech, who could barely say the words "circle" or "zip code", i have to shell out $100 to get my 360 fixed because i'm not under warranty. YAYYY!!! also, it's been almost 5 days. no fedex box. no confirmation email. but of course, my $100 was taken.
I've been looking to use my in-store Best Buy warranty replacement option, as my 10 month old 360 is starting to freeze, glitch, and generally be annoying.
What's the status of the Pros on store shelves at this point? I'd like to wait to go into the store until the only option they have is to hand me an HDMI-capable box. Are we there yet?

If they will let you trade up, get the Halo 360. Mine was manufactured on 8/7/07 and a lot of reports say that Falcon went into production before that date.
I've been very busy but now have time to websurf again so here I am... Well I finally got my 360 replaced. I did not have my warranty receipt but they were able to look it up at Gamestop. I got an HDMI Pro 360 back (Zeypher, they didn't have any Falcons).
I doubt they will let you get one of the Halo Edition 360s in exchange, you might have a chance if you paid $400 for your 360 like I did and have the receipt. FYI when they zapped my console it rang up at the $350 price.
I was looking at 360 boxes at best buy yesterday, and I couldn't find any indication of the hardware revision. All i saw was the manufacture date and serial number in that little window on the box. Same for the halo 3 editions. Where am I supposed to look to tell if it's a zephyr or not? Are falcons supposed to be out yet? Is there going to be any indication that it's a falcon (i.e. an explicit label, or a manufactured date I can judge by)?

that's probably not it, i forget what the exact numbers are

We should keep rumor mongering about the 65n processor revision (GFX is not being revised any time soon), even though no one has seen pictures of a console opened up with evidence of the revision, and MS has not confirmed anything about them.

pretty much all 360s premium, elites, and halos on the shelf right now are zephyrs, with the extra glued contacts and the new heatpipe.
There is no 65nm chip on the market, and it is not needed to avoid the RROD. The new consoles are free from that burden by nature of the redesign. 65nm really shouldn't mean anything to you.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
I'm suprised we aren't getting more "RROD Halo Edition". I figured with all the game time people would be putting into it 360's would be dropping left and right. Perhaps Microsoft is actually beginning to fix the consoles before sending them back.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

I know this is a minor annoyance compared to all of you who have had to live through RRODs, but my 360's DVD tray has been giving me problems ever since I got the console in Oct. 2006. I press the open button (on the console or on the remote, doesn't matter) and I can hear the motors working, but it's like it's not strong enough, or a gear or strap is slipping, and it doesn't open. So I repeatedly hit open/close dozens of times, and after a random amount of time doing this, somewhere between one and five minutes, the tray finally opens.
I keep my 360 upright (I don't have enough room to keep it horizontal, plus it seems to me that vertical would be better for ventilation.)
Also, I tried removing the faceplate, and the problem still happens, which confirms that it's not the faceplate that's blocking the tray.
Also, sometimes, while the tray motors seem to be struggling to open the tray, if I push the tray in, it'll sometimes open (only works maybe 20% of the time.)
Has anyone else come across this? It's really annoying, but at the same time, not worth the hassle of sending it back to M$ and waiting for weeks for a fix.

I've ran my Halo 360 for more than 12 hours straight a couple times since getting it with no sign of failure yet.
I think it's fairly safe to say that in 10 years from now the Xbox 360 won't have quite the strong presence other nostalgic consoles have, like neogeo, saturn, etc.

Most likely because there won't be any operating 360's by that time.

Microsoft is just trying to stamp out counterproductive, nostalgia driven pack-ratting. Live fast and die young is the console motto for the 21st century! Wooo!
The console I finally got back has been running very well for about 5 months now. Flawlessly, you might say. Long, long gaming sessions, being left on for a weekend accidentally, etc. All good.

But only a little. I sprung for the replacement plan at Best Buy and am HOPING it fails on me within 2 years so I can get a newer model
Step 2: Pay for Halo 3 in full, in advance to make sure you're going to be able to get the game in one stop
Step 3: Load the game, select Heroic, and watch the difficulty select screen fade away

Do NOT buy this.
Wrong. By keeping it upright, you are blocking its primary intake for ventilation, especially if you are using the HDD.
