So my 360 died. Again. 3 Times Now.
Posts
So would it be a good idea to start the now? What if the thing doesn't fail for a bit? Will it matter? Do I tell them just about the freezing or lie and say I have the RROD?
So last week my year and a half old 360 suffered a RROD without any warning at all. I had bought a 3 year warranty from Future Shop when I bought it because I knew it was going to die at some point. They called me back after two days and told me that they wouldn't be able to fix it, so they were just going to give me a new one. I decided that I would just pay the $100 difference and upgrade to an Elite, knowing that I would be losing all my saves and whatever else from my HD. It was worth it because I ended up getting two game I didn't have - Marvel: UA and Forza 2 - plus the upgrade to the Elite for only $100.
However, I am having that problem where the stupid DRM is not letting me access my Live Arcade games when I'm not connected to Xbox Live. If I call Microsoft are they going to tell me off or do I have a chance at getting this resolved, either by them refunding me my points or by some Microsoft magic that I don't know about to make it work?

I would give them a call now. No need to lie about it. If you can't get more than 15 minutes of playtime out of it, its definitely failing and worth starting the repair process. If they give you any flak or suggest you are out of warranty, then maybe wait it out until it goes for good.
The first things they are going to ask you to do is disconnect everything from the console for about 60 seconds, then connect it all again. Then they'll ask if it happens when the HDD is removed. You can do that ahead of time, and maybe save some time on the call.
Also, try to call them during business hours, or you run the risk of dealing with an out-of-country call center. Thats never fun.

Well, the problem is it doesn't happen all the time. I can get good long stretches of play out of the thing still. So I'll probably wait until it actually fails which, judging by what everyone is saying, will happen right on the day Mass Effect comes out.
Have you tried redownloading any of the content? If that doesn't work, you need to give them a call. I don't know if they'll be very helpful since it wasn't replaced through them, but its worth a shot.

Well, I had to redownload it when I put it on my 120gb HD. I'll give it another shot though.

Here in Australia a store called GAME is offering a deal that if you trade in 10 used Xbox games, and an xbox console, you can get the xbox 360 with viva pinata and Forza 2 for $199.
Since EB match prices, if I go in there and get them to match it, along with their (2 for 1 used game deal) I could buy 7 games, at say 18 dollars each. And get 3 for free. Then buy a used xbox for 99 dollars. So all up, I spend 225 dollars. add this to the 199 and it comes to- $424 for a Pro console. Retail here is about 530 upwards.
Is there anything to stop EB from telling me to fuck off? If they say they will price match, they have no right to refuse it I suppose.
I'm debating between making microcenter give me a new boxed one (I have an extended warranty), or just sending it in to MS... if I knew I could nab a Falcon, i'd probably just use up the microcenter replacement, but I think I might just see what MS does (and hope that the refurb dies 6 months from now when the store will only have falcons left)
As long as the deal's valid, you could just buy the used xbox/games at EB and drive straight to GAME with them, so if EB'll honor it there's not really a reason why this wouldn't be legit... it might piss off the EB employees working there, though..
is this covered by the RROD warranty? cause, I dunno, if MS gives me a faulty console, I think that's sort of shady.

That might not work. My understanding is that when you get an extended warranty from a local store, they record the serial number for future reference -- so you couldn't for instance, just bring in a broken box from your friend the next day to get 2 new consoles.
If you return to MS, they're going to send you a refurb (after like a month), and it may not be (?definitely won't be) the same one you sent in. I suspect, then, that if you try to bring this one in to your local store, you'll be refused, since it's not the same system that they initially agreed to warranty.
If I were you, I'd go for the microcenter deal -- the refurb they sent me has a squishy power button, and a build date that's older than my original 360. I'd much rather have a new one, with the possibility of HDMI/65 nm chip.
Then again, if they make you return the HD and everything, and you have a ton of xbox live arcade stuff, MS seem to pull some shenanigans transferring XBLA stuff to a new box, so YMMV.
Well to be honest it really isn't that hard to deal with. I am waiting on my coffin for my 2nd repair and it does suck. But the 4 weeks I have not had a working 360 doesn't invalidate the 48 weeks of pure awesome that I have had a 360. A couple of weeks off just means I get caught up on games on my pc, psp, and DS. Now if MS hadn't stepped up and came through with the longer warranty I would probably be a lot more pissed off.
The guy I spoke to (who, honestly, didn't seem to be able to explain things all that clearly, so who knows) specifically said that after I get the refurb back from MS I should bring it in, and they'll switch the S/N in the warranty record... which they should do, it's not like a 30 second call to microsoft wouldn't confirm it
and yeah, I'm semi worried about xbla stuff (I have a lot)... when I brought it back yesterday I had taken the HD out and was carrying it around in a separate bag in the hopes of making sure, but it didn't get that far
*edit
The people at microcenter seemed to want me to send it to MS anyway (probably because it saves them money, and if the one MS sends me actually fixes the problem and works for the next few years then they get to pocket my warranty)... now, whether they'll also try to screw me afterwards is an open question, but I can see why they'd rather I deal with MS instead of them while I can
It takes about 3 weeks to come back, mine just came back on Friday. I was wondering whether or not I should buy a fan for my 360(the intercooler). I do not want it to overheat while playing Mass Effect.
Jesus, all that and you still have to fucking pay them $199? Sell that shit on ebay for some cash man... Fuck GAME.
It's like 350 US for a 360 pro console with HDMI, viva, and forza.
Got it today. Went to Dick Smith, bought 10 xbox games such as black, GTA etc... for 98 dollars. Bought a used xbox for 79. Traded it in at EB with the game deal. And got forza 2, viva pinata, xbox 360 pro with HDMI for only $376 Australian Dollars.
Bleh. My 360 RRoD'ed on me tonight. I have the bronze protection plan from Microcenter too, and was hoping that I would be able to switch my broken one for a new console. It sucks that we'd have to go through MS to get it fixed instead. I'm going to call them on Friday and see if i get a different response. Did you get yours from the Santa Clara store too?

Anyone know what the deal with this is? I don't seem to remember it doing it the first few times I turned it on.

my 4th 360 just gave me a "this disc cannot be read" error in the middle of Mass Effect.

Don't know how you keep your consoles, my brother launch PS2 bought on the day or release is still working.
shut the fuck up and get out of this thread you damn troll.

Don't know how you keep your consoles, my X launch Y bought on the day or release is still working. Replace X with any acquaintance or relation and Y with any poorly designed product.
Example: Don't know how you keep your consoles, my father's launch NES bough on the day or release is still working without any need to blow on the cartridges. Obviously, nobody has ever had there NES break or have had to blow on the cartridges because of one experience.
