As an example, I designed and ran this scenario for a Stompy Bots party I threw a few years back.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_YEdzSswGjNWGo0YnY3Mk5sUk0/view?usp=drivesdk

Two IS Companies plus supporting Battle Armor, versus a Clan Supernova Binary plus two supporting Stars. Took us about a nine hour play day, but we ran to completion. IIRC, I had two to three players per side, controlling lances/stars.

Having run and played Company++ size games in both BT and AS, I muuuch prefer those large-scale engagements in AS.

You can actually do a whole battle in a single day's play, as opposed to six turns or so of BT. Also, because AS is built for it, and moves quicker, it's just more fun moment to moment.

That's the scale of conflict I really want to play at, I think. Companies/binaries of mechs, with some supporting elements of infantry & vehicles, maybe some way to model air/artillery strikes as well. I wish they'd do a PC game tuned to make that scale of play fun (or just something like Megamek for AS).

I finished my AGoAC miniatures, plus a bonus! Yay!!

Here's Team Yellow versus Team Purple:

Team Yellow, including the currently-unavailable Classic Wasp:

Team Purple, including the currently-unavailable Classic Valkyrie

    Q5zd8w8l.jpg

I split the teams into roughly-equivalent groups (lol double Wolverine), but I'd not stat'd out the BV to see how close it comes. My curiosity might get me around to that at some point.

The purple 'mech paired with the Wolverine is a Shadowhawk, yes?

That's a really awesome looking Shadowhawk.

Yup, it's a S'hawk. The new classic sculpt of it is really, really good. It's also available in metal from Iron Wind, if that suits your fancy.

I've never liked BattleTech minis in the past, but those are really nice. The Thunderbolt and Catapult in particular are enormous improvements over any of the previous sculpts. I think the Wasp and Valkyrie are still derpy-looking, unfortunately, but the rest look like they had professional artists behind them, with much better use of proportion and detail than I've come to expect from BattleTech.

  • NipsNips Luxuriating in existential crisis.Registered User regular
Since they were pulled due to reasons, there's been talk from the sculptor wanting to do another pass at the Valkyrie and Wasp to clean up the detail on the sculpts and maybe fix their stances a bit. I honestly think sculpting good Light 'Mechs might be a bit harder now that bar's been raised so much by the rest of the Classics.

Anyone know if they're they going to make more of the BT: A Game of Armored Combat boxes? I put together a few mechs from non-terrible Iron Winds sculpts and some third party guys and played a lance vs. lance game, the boxed set would be a nice way to get 8 good sculpts for a good price if it were actually available for purchase.

Did a 2v1 last night using the scenario in the AGoAC book that features a Command lance consisting of a Thunderbolt 5S, Shadowhawk 2H, and Catapult K2 supported by a Recon lance of two Commandos (2D and 3A), and a Locust 1V facing an Awesome 8Q, Thunderbolt 5SE, Griffin 1M, and Wolverine 6K. Not wanting to get tied up by lights while their command lance sniped me I spawned in on the southwest corner of the map closer to their Command Lance.

I took up position in a really nice hill with the Awesome and Griffin getting pretty comfy pretty quick and used the Thunderbolt and Wolverine as screeners. The K2 got some good shots off on the Wolverine but quickly noped out when the Awesome and Griffin returned fire. Meanwhile they did try to flank with the lights but the Locust NASCAR'd ahead and ended up getting its leg shot off and promptly dead after I did a slight shuffle to ensure that it would be running into effectively a dead end alley of angry lasers and punching. This caused the OpFor to get really hesitant with the Commandos and caused them to veer off buying me time to continue chewing on the bigger mechs.

I moved my Thunderbolt along the west to help prevent myself getting encircled and try to draw them out of position a bit. Their Thunderbolt took the bait and tried to close in on me but didn't notice I was standing one level above them and received a swift kick as their reward along with a shitload of PPC fire. The Thunderbolt tried to maneuver to get on even ground but I was able to get one level above again not that it mattered because the next round the Thunderbolt's LRM ammo detonated. From there they just weren't sure what to do and tried to trade shots but the K2's MG ammo detonated next, then a Commando received a healthy dose PPC fire next and promptly melted. The OpFor conceded after that and I felt kinda bad cause it was such a thorough stomp and the K2 missed a lot of shots which could have put me on the back foot.

That game was my first time with the Awesome and it really lives up to its name. That thing is terrifying when it gets planted in cover and can start doing non-stop volleys. Pretty much anything it looked at just got promptly deleted. I was also kinda surprised by the Griffin. The 55 tonners I was never a fan of in Mechwarrior cause they felt so awkward but it's turning out that they're really great mechs that can do a ton of work in tabletop. The Griffin runs kinda toasty but can still lay down the pain for a few continuous rounds before needing to cool off for a round.

I need to start getting new scenarios to use for different player counts since we've exhausted the AGoAC ones which means delving into the wonderful world of Battle Value to come up with new match-ups.

Not gonna lie the first I saw of that I didn't look closely and accidentally thought it was for the Battletech computer game and I got really, really sad because I didn't want them to go there.

    Glad they haven't.

Also, are there any "standard" tt rules that allow you to get additional spaces in either the head or CT of a 'mech? I know there are compact gyros and engines, but iirc those are considered experimental. And I know there was something with a torso mounted cockpit, but I think that was the same thing.

Just imagining a JagerMech variant with a RAC-2 in each arm, a third in the Head, and a pair of MLs. Might have room for SRMs as well? A pair of Streak-2s would probably be fine.

Pretty much no, unless you dip into higher tech.

Extra head space: Torso Cockpit, Small Cockpit
Extra CT space: Compact Gyro, Compact Engine

That said, depending on where you are on the timeline, all of these become widely available tech (even if they're not used much).

Hey thread. I've suddenly come into an overstock of AGoAC figs, via some questionable life choices. If anyone's interested in supplementing their collection I'll be liquidating a decent chunk of these miniatures, and I'd like you guys to have a first crack at it.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM or pipe up here, and I can distribute details.

Listen, I'm watching the BT forums thread where they announced this like a hawk. If I've learned anything, it's that like 18% of the Battletech playing population thought the KS was supposed to go up this month instead of July.

Whew. Finished my second year running Battletech at RAGECON.

Lots more people this time around! I think we had players right up to the end on Friday and until an hour before closing on Saturday.

Already making plans for next year.

Infinitely jelly over here. I'm really feeling missing the Con season two years going now.

I'm going to try and make up for it with a Battletech party at the beginning of September. I'm planning to host "The 256th Reenactment of The Sack Of Talisker", with two companies of Oosik 'Mechs invading to knock out the local authorities and the HPG in the center of a heavily industrialized zone.

Just gotta finish up this last lance in Bravo company. 🤪

Oh, hey, a Davion Guard lance. How'd that get in here?

I'll tell you how: they shot a bunch of holes in the wall and walked through.

So, a Davion Guards lance in parade colors. I knew the Davs favored 'Mech-scale Axes, so in comes the Hatchetman and Axman. I bought the Hammerhands because I love all things Warhammer and Whammy-like, and the HH is basically a FedSuns Whammy with AC/10s instead of PPCs. The Wasp gets in there as a light scout for the heavier hitters, and makes the lance fit my Light-Medium-Heavy-Assault paradigm that I vaguely hold to with my lances.

Now here's a thing: If you squint and cross your eyes, and imagine the Axman is the -1N model instead of the -2N (pictured), this is what the lance throws downfield in a round:
    One AC/20 round.
    Three AC/10 rounds.
    A shit-ton of laser fire.
    A smattering of SRMs.

And then a round later, *chop* *chop*.

I love my big axe boys. I almost replaced the Wasp with a Nightsky, and the Hammerhands with a Berserker, but I already had the models and didn't want to put out the cash.

Then again, that leaves room in another Davion lance down the road for more axes.

I don't see how the courts really come into it. The article says Harmony Gold and Tatsunoko came to an agreement.

Yep, I had to do a double take last night. Guessing HG had a briefcase filled with money and promise of more money that Tatsunoko couldn't refuse... It is just sad that HG is going to continue for a long time in the USA. I'm not surprised given how much HG needs the Robotech label to survive and actually figured something like this was going to happen (because yeah, everything sucks lately).

The article seems to think the Sony movie deal is a big part of it. But honestly, I feel like Tatsunoko and Sony would've been better off to cut out the middle man, bring Studio Nue and Big West onboard, and just make a Macross movie. I don't think Robotech is a stronger brand in any meaningful way these days. Back in the 80's, or even the early-mid 90's when it was in syndication? Sure. But I feel like nowadays pretty much anyone who cares about Robotech knows its origins, and I never see product or promotional stuff for the other series it used, just the Macross part.

Also, they're all Japanese companies, why do they need a poky little North American production company owned by an Italian criminal to help them get this made?

To make things worse, I imagine that the Robotech movie is either going to be shelved or at best a streaming exclusive. Like you said, Robotech as a name just doesn't pull like it used to.

Heck poor Battletech doesn't have the draw towards younger generations either. I still haven't bought a box set of the new game and I loved the game back in the day. I don't have the time or friends anymore to play any campaign let alone a skirmish. All I have is 20ish minutes a day to play with my friends at work.

    Hey Mechwarriors!
I'm a long time casual mech enthusiast having enjoyed the Mechwarrior games in the past and HBS's Battletech mroe recently, so naturalyl when my FLGS randomly got the Beginner box in I bought it like the system whore that I am.

Having looked into things a bit, it seems like Battletech: A Game of Armoured Combat is the proper big box starter set with the 8 mechs. It also happens to be out of stock everywhere local as far as I can tell. From the OP I guess that Total Warfare is the big proper rules manual so I'll look into finding that. Does it include proper army composition and scenario stuff? Coming from other wargames, I'm pretty curious on is how list building works and you know, how to play game. I'd be keen to hear peoples thoughts on how to use the Armoured Combat and Beginner mechs to build a couple of lances.

I just started playing too, but as far as I can tell there are no guidelines on listbuilding or points. I've flat out asked a group of BT guys "so how what's the usual game size, lance vs lance? What's the standard battle value?" and gotten uncomprehending stares back. From the very little I've played it seems all completely ad hoc, sometimes 1 vs 1 sometimes multiple players, sometimes 1500 BV per player sometimes 3k, as expected with these wildly fluctuating values sometimes you're expected to field a single mech and sometimes an entire lance. And this was in the 3025 era, I imagine with Clan mechs around the BV values would have to be much higher to allow.

Speaking of which, not only is standard army composition a mystery but there's also the matter of tech era! There are a million to choose from and everyone is ready to defend to the death the superiority of their chosen favorite. Personally the Jihad and Dark Age stuff sounds stupid to me story wise, but more options with equipment sounds kinda neat.

It all seems very open ended and narratively determined, guys just say "hey I want to play a scenario like this, Y year, X BV per side, any takers?"

Anyway so I've just collected some miniatures that I like the look of (they were selling just the miniatures from the AGoAC box at Origins so I managed to grab those plus some of the decent looking Iron Winds minis and a few third party ones) and made my little mercenary company very adaptable. They're all old Star League mechs so low BV 3025 era game? No problem. High BV 3050 game vs Clan stuff? Ok they're all lostech SLDF variants now, no problem. Clan vs. Clan scenario for some reason? Ok these are Clan refits of the Star League mechs they brought with them.

So this question has frustrated me as well but if you get the classic mechs that they're putting out in plastic now you'll be pretty versatile to do whatever, the hardest part is going to Sarna, wading through the variants, picking out the ones you like and printing out record sheets for many of them and you'll be all set.

Oh! Another frustrating thing, there are rules for modifying mechs and designing your own, I ask if this is accepted or considered "that guy" territory and again get noncommital replies!

Hoo, boy, do I have thoughts. Peep this in a little bit; I'm going to edit in things as I go (breakfast with the baby makes proselytizing tough!)

Correct! Once you've moved past the Beginner Box (which, honestly, has more utility in there than you're probably realizing!), the next stop is the AGoAC box. As for stock, CGL has it in stock on their webstore, and they just announced that it'll be back in stores very soon.

From the OP I guess that Total Warfare is the big proper rules manual so I'll look into finding that. Does it include proper army composition and scenario stuff? Yes! Force generation is included in the "Creating Scenarios" chapter of Total Warfare. It gives guidelines (get used to hearing this) for how large forces should be for the kind of game you want to play, and how those forces should be constructed.

As an aside: Battletech is exceptionally flexible with how forces can be constructed. The two best tools you can use to help are Sarna and the Master Unit List.

Sarna is a wiki containing all of the accumulated knowledge about Battletech; more importantly (for force building), it will give you lists and descriptions of every variant of every unit ('Mech, Tank, whatever) in existence.
The Master Unit List contains a database of all those unit/variants, and has data for era of deployment and factions that use those variants; there's more to this though, which I'll get to in a bit.

Using just the 'Mechs in the AGoAC and Beginner boxes (don't forget the cardboard standees! You get a small pile of them to add in for bigger games!), you can simulate almost any sort of scenario from the earliest eras of the Succession Wars to even the 'end' of the Battletech timeline, the Dark Ages.

I hate to say this, but that group of guys is being woefully unhelpful. Let me see if I can clear the air a bit.

Battletech, as a game system, is flexible and allows you to choose just how you want to play. Just like in other systems, say Warhammer 40k, you can play at any number of game sizes and point values. In my opinion, 'standard' Battletech ('Mechs only, no advanced tactical or strategic systems in place) is best played at Lance-sized force composition: four 'Mech units per player, with roughly even forces between sides. Thus, for a two-player game (which is the most common, IMO), each player fields four 'Mechs. As for total BV (Battletech's Point System), it depends; do you want light recon lances bouncing off of each other (at a lower total BV), or big ol' fatty fatty 'Mechs trading high-alpha salvos (at much higher total BV)? That's up to you and your opponent!

All this is to say, the rules just provide guidelines! As the players, you get to decide how you want to play.

Here's another for-instance: One of the most fun (again, IMO) ways to play Battletech is what's called a Grinder. In a Grinder, each player is randomly assigned one 'Mech. All players then fight in a free-for-all to try and score kills on any opponents, scoring a point in the process. When your 'Mech is destroyed, you get a new one that's heavier or otherwise more powerful! Thus, when you're shot out of your light recon 'Mech, you'll come back into the game the next round swinging even bigger guns. It's a hilarious furball of rough play, lucky critical hits, and trying to be the person landing that last one hit on a super-crippled enemy 'Mech.

A Grinder gets run at almost all the big conventions that CGL has a presence at, and it's usually a day-long rolling-player affair. It's fucking great, and I love it to death.

On the flip side, you can go crazy-historical (or pseudo-historical) with the scenario and force composition. I'm planning a game/scenario for September which will pit two Companies of Oosik Regulars 'Mechs (so, 24 'Mechs) against a militia force of 'Mechs and conventional armor (taaaaaanks), in a bid to destroy the planet's sole interstellar communications array (a Hyperpulse Generator, or HPG). This game is going to be colossal in size, with (hopefully) four or more players per side. It's also going to run all damn day, because big games take time. But I like big games, and I cannot lie.

Correct! The lore timeline is filled with all sorts of stuff, so there's no one right way to play.
The Succession Wars era is very popular, because it's where the game began, and is very tech-light and easy to grok.
The Clan Invasion is also very popular, because it's where the Clans come in and some of the best storytelling is told, along with significant 'tech upgrades.

But then you have other eras!
The Age of War, before the widespread advent of 'Mech forces, where the Terran Hegemony tries to keep the five House nations in check.
The Star League era, where the Inner Sphere is (for once, and briefly) united. But brush wars in the Periphery demand military action!
The Civil War/Jihad/Reaving era, after the Invasion era, when things just go sideways as centuries-old hatreds and plots come to fruition, shattering the Inner Sphere and Clan Homeworlds.
The Republic Era into the Dark Ages, where a new interstellar empire forms from the ashes of the Jihad, finally imposes some order on the Inner Sphere...then promptly falls apart 150 years later.

It all seems very open ended and narratively determined, guys just say "hey I want to play a scenario like this, Y year, X BV per side, any takers?"

Yup! It can be as story-driven, or not-at-all, as you choose. Want to pit a double-size force of low-tech units against an elite group of high-tech machines? You can do that. Want to do something historical? There's more scenario books written than I think I'll play in a lifetime. So long as it's what you want to play, there's no wrong way!

Yes. Yes yes, yes. Exactly this! The game expressly doesn't care about WYSIWYG, so those 'Mechs in the new core boxes are super duper flexible for whatever era you want to play in.

So this question has frustrated me as well but if you get the classic mechs that they're putting out in plastic now you'll be pretty versatile to do whatever, the hardest part is going to Sarna, wading through the variants, picking out the ones you like and printing out record sheets for many of them and you'll be all set.

So a thing to note: the 'Mechs in the box sets are actually hand-picked (also, by tradition) that there's absolutely a variant for just about any role or faction that you'd want to play. And here's another dirty secret about the game, that not many people realize until they're super deep in: If you're following a factional Random Assignment Table, every faction has the chance to have a unit or variant from any other faction! The Inner Sphere is a big place, and sometimes your House Davion unit has to "requisition" some House Kurita manufactured 'Mechs. It just happens!

So the bottom line, in almost all cases, is Play With What You Want!

Oh! Another frustrating thing, there are rules for modifying mechs and designing your own, I ask if this is accepted or considered "that guy" territory and again get noncommital replies!

Alright, so here's the thing about tinkering with 'Mech designs: I'm biased, because I love it. But! Using custom designs is absolutely a thing you need to get consent from your fellow players for, before you roll those new designs out onto the table. The reason for this is very simple: virtually all canon 'Mech designs are flawed in some way, by design, due to their fictional circumstances. It is very easy, using the construction rules in the Tech Manual, to make designs that have no obvious flaws.

Even if you balance by BV, a custom or reworked 'Mech design is almost certainly more powerful than a canon design that's BV equivalent. BV is not a perfect system, and perfect balance is a lie. Especially in a ruleset as expansive and complicated as Battletech's.

That said, if you and your playmates are down with customs or reworked designs, go hog! One of the most challenging things to attempt in 'Mech design is leveraging all of the in-universe constraints that the designers do, to come up with interesting new designs or variants. Making a 'perfect', top-of-the-line design is fun, but so is designing something that a Periphery nation with next-to-no tech could field.

Again, whatever you and your fellow players want to do!

Okay, off the soap-box for a bit. If anyone has any more questions, I'm more than happy to reply! ;)
