The Triforce fetch quest is terrible, but they made it significantly less terrible in the HD version to the point that it's hard to even complain anymore. Coupled with the swift sail, they really addressed my main issues with the original pretty well.
I can understand not liking the triforce hunt, but I'm surprised to see it described as mediocre all around. I loved the new controls and the gyroscope aiming actually felt useful and not gimmicky.
I love windwaker always. I have 100%'d it on WiiU. Apart from the pictures, because screw that.
Really? That's the part that was remarkably less tedious. You can carry more photos, submit multiple photos at once, get the rare photos from Miiverse/bottles...... yeah it's almost too easy to finish now.
Since when is "less tedious" or "less terrible" a plus? It's still tedious and terrible. I'm with you on this one, Skull. I don't see what people see in Wind Waker. Except for Link's expressions. Those are brilliant. And the HD version looks very nice, of course.
A friend gave me the option, while paying back a debt to me, to give me a copy of the collector's edition of Wind Waker WiiU with the Ganon statue instead of the cash. I had to check myself before I laughed out out. Mainly because he absolutely loves Zelda and I value his friendship. I took the cash.
I've been jonesing for Zelda after E3, and I might or might not be in the middle of both Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds. I forgot how good the soundtracks to these games are.

So... the triforce hunt is literally like a tiny tiny portion of the game. And the rest of the game is absolutely excellent. So, yeah, the one minor thing about the original that sucked being not sucky this time? That is cause for praise.
It's odd when people try to hand wave away any complaints about Windwaker's pacing as only being about the triforce hunt, as if that's the only problem with the game. Every single aspect of every part of that game seems to have been built with the express purpose of wasting time.
If you're the kind of person who just enjoys spending time in a Zelda game for the sake of spending time in a Zelda game then it's probably not as noticeable, but if you're not, the tedium and repetition that is endemic to that game starts out annoying and eventually becomes maddening long before you even get to the triforce hunt.
Case in point, pretty much every post on this page.

I never did the photo thing in Wind Waker. The reason wasn't tedium. It's because... this is a Zelda game. I'm not exactly against collection things in games, but what drives me to do them is the reward. It can either be tangible in the game sense, OR it can actually just be cool as an aesthetic / setting thing. Getting figurines in the game world is... lame. I mean what the hell were they thinking?

The two things I didn't like about WW was the photo hunt (never bothered) and the Triforce hunt. That being said, this game had the best ending fight and story of any Zelda to date hands down. Not even TP or SS Link's can match up to WW Link's badassness.

Except that I vehemently disagree with this assertion. The original game had two large problems - the sailing was slow and boring, and the triforce hunt sucked. They did a very good job at fixing both of those in the HD version. So... *shrug* If you guys wanna hate the game, I guess that's fine, but don't pretend it's a bad game just because you didn't like it.
I also wanted more and longer dungeons, and the ocean was a lame overworld. The music and some of the story was cool. But I wasn't as taken with the last boss fight and ending as everyone else seemed to be. Basically, I think at least a few of the Zelda games do everything I want out of a Zelda game better than WW.
So no, it's not bad. But when I want to play Zelda, it's at the bottom of the list. It's a really nice list though.

It's odd when people complain about a game 'wasting time'.
The mini-games in GTA4 to take your 'friends' out and get your 'likability' meter up or whatever..that's 'wasting time'. Sitting around and playing poker in RDR, that's 'wasting time'. Traversing a flooded world to hunt down pieces of 'triumph forks' while also having to collect money so your maps to these artifacts will be translated by an odd 'fairy' man named 'Tingle'? That's, unfortunately, a part of the world. I do wish they made the two mini-dungeons(fire and ice mountains) into full dungeons, or at least one full one of fire/ice. That'd help out a bit, but Nintendo did tone down that shard hunt in the HD re-release. So...unless you're playing the GCN version...suck it up, kiddo.
Then again, I love WW. Such great moments in it. Awesome, ominously robed-GD. Tetra and her pirate crew/ship. Dragon Roost Cavern's fire effects. Going down to the castle for the first time. Tetra past. The last bossfight. The ending. So goooood.
Can we get the chemicals in. 'Cause anything's better than this.
You can actually start collecting pieces of the triforce before you're prompted to go hunting for them. I had a couple of the pieces before I was prompted. The only reason I did that was because I was a 14 year old that loved Zelda and was exploring everything I could. I didn't realize it was even a thing until the internet let me know how life endingly horrible it was.
They really should have tried to work in "hunt for these now, they might come in handy later" or something. I dunno. I lucked out and didn't hate it.

The King of Red Lions could certainly have been a bit less pushy before that point.
I must be the only person on earth who didn't even notice the triforce hunt. Might be because I had a sgitload of rupees because I never really bought anything, though.

I have a feeling the whole hunt was because people wanted something to spend their rupees on. In OoT you spent most of your time with a maxed out wallet. Same with the magic armor in TP.
It's odd when people complain about a game 'wasting time'.
There's absolutely nothing odd about that at all. When a game spends large amounts of time with nothing interesting or fun going on, it is quite literally "wasting time".
Did it seem like a good use of your time to do the traversal challenge that you're required to do every time you visit the Deku Tree? It's a somewhat involved sequence (that feels like it's about five minutes long) in which you run up some hills, fight some deku babas, go to your inventory and switch to the grappling hook, aim at a grapple point, watch the animation of link throwing the hook, watch the animation of link swinging on the hook, jump off, aim at the next grapple point, watch the animation of link throwing the hook... and on and on. Not so bad the first time, but what about the 27th time the game requires you to perform that exact sequence, verbatim? Better switch to the grapple hook again... Oops, Link dropped into the water because I fell asleep at the controller... Guess I'll have to do the whole thing over again.
The people who made Wind Waker were very proud of their character animations, such as the the cute little routine that plays when a moblin gets hit, where they fall down, stand back up, scratch their head, look around, etc. It would be a shame if the player were to miss it because they were too busy attacking the moblin or anything. So much of a shame that they felt it necessary to make the moblin invincible for the entirety of that 10 second long animation, every. single. time. you hit them, to make sure you don't miss it. And don't you dare try to circumvent that by hitting them in the back for extra damage, because the animation for that is even longer.
Neither of these things are game breaking on their own, but, much like the sailing and the triforce hunt, are merely representative examples of the fundamental lack of respect for the player's time that is endemic to every aspect of the game's design. Like I said, if all you want is to spend time in a Zelda game, Wind Waker is the ideal game for you. If you're concerned with how that time is spent, on the other hand, there will be problems.
It's funny that you mentioned GTA4, because that game is infamous for its insistence on wasting the player's time with inane garbage. I don't think anybody here is suggesting that Wind Waker is as egregiously bad about it as that, though.
So, it would've been better if there had been an item you could use to make the boat go faster than normal, and simultaneously eliminate the need to change the wind direction when you want to turn?

It's something that was really awesome the first time through when you're exploring a brand new world with the obsessiveness only children have. I really had no patience for it on subsequent playthroughs and so I only beat the game for the second time with the HD version.
So if you're not liking the triforce hunt try being a kid in 2003? Surely that is the solution to all of your problems.
I can understand not liking the triforce hunt, but I'm surprised to see it described as mediocre all around. I loved the new controls and the gyroscope aiming actually felt useful and not gimmicky.
I mean, my resume of completed Zelda games is pretty low, but still... To me, the dungeons felt bland and so did the bosses. Sailing is very boring. Ballad of Gales helps, but you still have to put up with long sections of staring at the screen while nothing happens. The Earth and Wind temples were annoying as hell too. Switching to the other character should've been assigned to button press. The Earth Sage was ok I guess, but the Wind one felt like I was shackled to a lead ball or something.
I'm sure at some point I'll trudge through and get the rest of the rupees I need for the charts, though. Just not for a while.
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

Ahh, my masterful skills of looking at the totally still in english URLs says they are hiring a programmer (mostly camera and UI work it seems) and a planner (which in this context seems to be script-entry grunt + level designer :P). This is good, these are pretty mid-development positions.
Oh, and the positions last until either "Half a year from July 2014" or "A full year from July 2014" - soooo.... summer/fall 2015 release? :P
I can't imagine MM3D taking Grezzo too long to put together. The game had already been designed once, and they have the engine and assets from OOT3D to use.
While I understand some of the criticism for Wind Waker, I still regard that first time I started sailing as one of my favorite video game experiences ever. The triumphant soundtrack, the seagulls flying around your boat, the feeling that you can just go anywhere... That was all pretty damn awesome.
