I really need to get some files off of my laptop to take to the computer lab with me to work with, and my USB port is not working.
I have a laptop, there are only two usb ports on the side, neither seem to work. I've tried with both my iPod and a thumb drive, they light up for a little bit but then turn off nearly immediately. (I don't even get to a "Do Not Disconnect" screen on my iPod).
I've tried plugging in my laptop, and it's worked fine in the past...any ideas as to what to do?
I would try burning a disc, but my CD RW Drive doesn't work all that well.
This might not be it since your device actually turns on for a second before shutting down, and I know very little about laptops, but have you tried checking your BIOS to make sure there is power going to them? If there is, is it enough?
Sometimes this happens to me if I accidentally reset the defaults in my BIOS, for some reason half the USB ports aren't getting power by default.

The warning window just didn't pop up.
