Roughly ten years ago, I borrowed a book from my mom. And for the life of me, I can't remember who wrote it or even what it was called despite mostly remembering the plot.
Basically the book was about a family who moves into an old mansion that's been abandoned for years. It's fallen in disrepair and filled with expensive stuff that belonged to the old owner. The parents are going to sell some of the stuff to pay for the mansion. The old owner had a bit of a reputation for being loud and bossy- at one point her servant fell in a lake, so she ordered the servant keep from drowning, jumped in with her and bellowed until help rescued them. Another plot section is one of the boys stays in an abandoned, rickety old house with some friends, but they forgot to bring anything to drink and wind up resorting to drinking rain water from the gutters. Then when they try to leave, a billy goat won't let them, so their parents get worried and rescue them. At the end of the book, one of the boys figures out the location of a hidden safe in the mansion, and the combination. They open it up and find a ton of jewelry, some of which is made with hair.
Anybody remember reading something like this?
