FFIX is the best FF unless you're a heartless robot.

Of which case your robotic brain probably idolizes FFVII or something. Because you have no soul.

FFIX was downright charming, the entire cast was great, it got rid of all those damn for super serious ham handed drama craps the last two games dragged into the series.

It had Chocobo's hot and cold.

    Best game.

Interesting, because FFVII and FFIX are my two favorites of the series by far.

    I love me some IX.

Then again I love me some of...pretty much the entire series. I like me some XII and love me some in small doses XIII and its spawn.

I love everything about IX that doesn't involve me playing the game. Its charming and pretty and has incredible music, and I love the cast. All of it, nearly.

They should remake it in full with no changes aside from including Triple Triad.

We actually had a conversation about FF stories during FFXIV.

I always stood by the belief that the most important characteristic of a Final Fantasy story has been....the characters.

The heroes, villains, allies and enemies of each numbered FF are more important then the story themselves, in my opinion. After all, you do spend dozens of hours with a party of individuals, each with their own personalities, faults, ideologies, etc., that they tend to overshadow whatever hokey "save the world" plot is driving them (and you) to move forward.

Final Fantasy IX is a good example. The story is as bare-bones as you can get, a typical "evil kingdom wants to use this princess' magic to rule the world" story you've seen hundreds of times already (things get crazier from there, as the series is wont to do, but for the most part this is the story). But because Zidane, Garnet and the others are so loveable, you become motivated to see them through to the end of their quest without being hung up on the quest itself.

For example, my all-time favorite moment and boss battle in FFIX was against Black Waltz no. 3:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DJOZCrArZK8

In a story-sense, Black Waltz is there to take back Garnet. That's his goal, the standard "muhahaha, I'm here to take the princess!" conflict. But that's not what we latched onto; it was the personal attack he made against Vivi by destroying his fellow brethren. This wasn't just about keeping the princess safe from the villain's clutches, it was primarily about helping Vivi make Black Waltz pay.

This is why FFXII was a monumental disappointment for me, as it prioritized the story itself over the characters (despite the absolutely wonderful first couple of hours, which balanced character and story). FFXIII had a similar problem, but still managed to be somewhat decent with the focus it gave to its characters (even if you disliked them). FFXIII-2 completely ruined that by putting the story ahead of its characters; Noel and Serah were virtually blank avatars conveying all of the head-scratching nonsense involving Time Paradoxes and the many Yuels; We could have replaced those two with any other two characters and not miss a beat.

Most of the time, the story in an FF is going to be dumb: evil trees, space whales, a monster born from a person born from a dream born from a past life, and so on. But if you're invested in the characters who are facing these absurd events, than the absurd events are just as important to you as they are to the characters.

I'm getting close to beating FF5 for the first time. I dunno if I should play 4 or 6 after. I played both and then stopped like half-way through each maybe. I'd probably play 6 first, I enjoyed it more than 4.

If you can get FFIV complete on PSP or vita or whatnot that's an excellent thing to get. I mean a lot of people hate on The After Years but I found it rather charming. I guess the phone one is even better? but I haven't played TAY on Android yet.

You were one of those monsters who played FFXIV v1 for more then ten minutes, your lack of good sense is evident. (I mean we'll ignore the fact that the only reason I know this is because I played it all the way til shutdown as well.)

Origins (PS1) and NES are the only way in the west to play a non-EZ mode FF1.

Nah, iOS/Android one is super babby mode with MP and such I believe. I am too lazy to download and run it to double check, but the play store images show what looks like MP to me.

    GBA/PSP/iOS are all baby mode.
PS1 is original-mode with ease of use fixes, like attacking non-dead enemies not hitting air (what they fixed in FF3 NES onwards) with an option to play baby mode instead.
NES is, of course, the original game in all its broken glory.

The PS1 version is available digitally for PS3+PSP+Vita if you want to scratch an FF1 itch.

Origins is digital, if you're that gung-ho on "non baby mode". Personally speaking while I don't deny the MP and leveling changes affect the game's difficulty, I find the original too primitive to go back to.

More info about Final Fantasy Explorers:

    - Supports local and internet multiplayer
    - About 20 jobs. Besides the already shown knight, white mage, monk, and black mage, there's also dragoon, paladin, thief, ninja, red mage, time mage, bard, and freelancer.
    - You can assign up to 8 abilities to various buttons in combat.
    - Even though it looks like Monster Hunter, it feels more like FF11/FF14-lite. Positioning and orientation is important, and there's an ability synergy system.
    - There's a combat log that shows damage numbers and such.
    - You can swap around weapons and armor, but you can also swap around abilities too. You can learn abilities on one job and use them on others.
    - However, the cost of abilities is different if used on a job they don't come from. For example, the cost of black magic is halved on black mage compared to other jobs.
    - Set on an island with many areas that you can freely explore
    - It'll be possible to recruit monsters you defeat. You can create a party of two players and two monsters (not sure if this is the only setup, but it's what's given)
    - There's lots to do after the main story is completed. They're talking 100~200 hours of play.
    - They're developing the game to give the spirit of FF in a multiplayer RPG.

Just as a reminder, this is the new 3DS game that kind of looks like Monster Hunter, but is apparently not like Monster Hunter.

FFX-2 may be the RPG that finally kills me.

On one hand, I love it. So many elements of it are fantastic.

On the other hand, it appears to have been designed by a sadistic OCDophobe.

I'm determined to platinum it. I feel like I need to buy a Google Glass so I can read GameFAQs while I play without even looking up to a different screen.

Like Chocobolicious, I love FF IX because it is so unabashedly nostalgic and old-school FF. No brooding Nomura-era protagonists here, weighed down with gratuitous angst and belts; instead we get Zidane, who I often refer to as "the anti-Squall", and Garnet, whose sadness (like Yuna's) is well-justified by all the stuff piled on her shoulders. Plus a supporting cast full of wonderfully fanciful, unrealistic character designs straight from Amano's sketchbook, and Vivi - who not only takes his whole look from one of the original classes/sprites, but is the woobiest Black Mage ever.

And, as always, the music. "Vamo alla Flamenco" is one of my favorites, along with "Hunter's Chance", "Loss of Me" and its uptempo reprise, "Protecting My Devotion".
