Actually Ellone is just old enough that Ultimecia would have been able to possess Adel if that's how all this works, since Adel wanting Ellone is the whole reason s/he ended up in space.

Actually I was slightly mistaken.
Ultimecia can only go back as far as when the whatever-Ellone-Machine-Thingy existed. Which was built after Adel became a space-popsicle.
In the beginning Ultimecia possessed Edea (who was a Sorceress at the time) in order to get her hands on Ellone so she could turn her in to a Sorceress which would allow her to possess Ellone so she could use Ellone's innate power to send her own consciousness back in time to possess Adel (the most powerful Sorceress at the time in terms of raw power and military might). She tries to do all of this to avert her own foretold demise at the hands of a SeeD.
Adel wanted Ellone, not to possess her like Ultimecia did, but to raise her and groom her to be the next Sorceress Supreme of Eshtar. For whatever reason if a Sorceress does not pass on her power to a successor before she dies bad things happen to the Sorceress. What the game never specifies, but bad enough that the evil and twisted Adel became obsessed with finding someone to pass her powers on to.
After Squall and company defeat Ultimecia she passes on her power to the past version of Edea (turning her in to a Sorceress), thus starting the cycle anew.
Axen on

FF8 had a lot of really great ideas and plot points.
Its setting as a whole doesn't hold up... being made up of set-pieces rather than a cohesive world. And some things like the GF memory thing are just bad.
But the flaws don't prevent us from talking about the good parts it had.
If it got a full remake Alter Code F style it could be something amazing. Lots of the components that make up FF8 are good... They're just not all put together well or complete.
It has clearly been ages since I've played FF8 because all I remember is the good soundtrack, enemies leveling up with you, Zell having an OP Limit, and the GF memory wipe thing. And obviously Triple Triad.
All of this talk of Edea and Rinoa and Laguna's past stuff with his bros, barely remember any of it.
Once-per-thread reminder that Laguna's short-lived and very goofy film career inspired Seifer's gunblade stance and "romantic dream" to be a sorceress' knight.
Man Triple Triad, I miss that..Goddamnit now you got me wanting to play FF8 just to max out a Triple Triad deck. I got to many games on my plate for this!
At the very least it is evidence pointing towards her having a thing for dangerous guys.
Heh, I won't even get in to how both dudes she dated are (more-or-less) military guys like her old man (whom she has a poor relationship with). Even though I would get all the enjoyment in the world from writing a 10 page thesis on it.

Fun fact: The Laguna sections had a different translation team than the main game.
THAT part of the game was handled by Alexander O. Smith.
So, if you thought those parts of the game felt different, that might be part of why.
Why would they have the best translator and localizer that has ever done a video game Japanese --> English conversion work on only one part of the game?

Had he done much work yet at that point? I don't remember really hearing his name until the Vagrant Story localization blew me away.

It was probably more like him saying the lines right before the actors and then making sound effects and flailing his arms around during action scenes.
Interspersed with him saying, "Oh this is the best part- no, no, no wait this is the best part- oh man this is the best part!"

Also, since I didn't get to this yet, not that much for Square. I think that was one of his first jobs for them. I mean, he was a Harvard graduate with professional experience (I think he started out doing soap opera captionss for TV in Hawaii), but they pretty much just knew he spoke English.
Again, memory's fuzzy, but I think he got his start on his working relationship with Yasumi Matsuno by planning all his smoke breaks (not that he smoked, but...) so he could meet up with the guy to talk.
Squall's had a pretty good voice in both KH and Dissidia. The latter even had the inner monologues.
I think they could get the voice just fine. They could (and should) reuse the same voice actor, and I'd be totally happy. I just think there's too much monologue for voice acting, and it would get obnoxious pretty fast.
Rinoa is totally Ultimecia. I even dated a Rinoa once, and she totally ended up being Ultimecia.
It was David Boreanaz - Angel from Angel/Buffy. He did a great job.
I'd like Final fantasy 8 if it were just Laguna's story. The bumbling soldier turned bumbling actor turned bumbling reporter. the final boss would still be ultimecia, but only because Laguna somehow bumbled his way into shooting her in the face.

Plot twist? Ellone murders Rinoa and steals her power, or does Rinoa do what Adel wanted to do with Ellone in the first place?
Dunno, but the mod says you can add your own custom tracks anyway.

Make of that what you will.
There's also this exchange.
Seifer: "Rinoa, you're really going to fight me? Don't you remember that time when we..."
Rinoa: "Stop it!"

Hah, yep, it's a game full of teenagers doing teenager things. Things they regret or exaggerate or mention at the worst times.

8-4 podcast. They had an interview with him.
Another episode they had a piece on the localization of the original Metal Gear Solid.

He probably acted out the movie every time they watched it.
