If you enjoy shmups at all, in any capacity you must buy and play Astebreed. Everything great about Ether Vapor Remaster is here and turned up to eleven. Everything is easier to read this time around, weapon mechanics are even tighter and just plain more fun. There's all kinds of great stuff to ease you into the game. A prologue level that works as an in game tutorial, a Gallery that functions as an interactive weapons and systems guide, and three smoothly scaling difficulty levels. There are also two alternate characters to unlock and some fantastic score analysis and leaderboards.
The biggest improvement over Ether Vapor Remaster though is the camera. The transitions between the chase sequences and the vertical and horizontal sequences are seamless and totally awesome. Combine that with it's completely modern high resolution full screen presentation and the experience is pretty breathtaking for shmup fans. If you though Sine Mora was pretty and dynamic you have to check this one out. Also big pluses for it's 80s/90s giant mecha robot space opera super anime story. It's pitch perfect. It's also completely skippable if that's not your thing.
Hmmm.
Hmmmmmm.
It looks pretty swanky. On the other hand, I wasn't the biggest fan of Ether Vapor. I can be a bit of a grognard when it comes to my shmupping...
Even though my skills aren't where they used to be I feel ya. A lot of the missteps in EVR have been addressed. Mainly everything being clear and easy to read and keeping the feel of the gameplay consistent through all of the camera transitions. And let's talk about the bullets, since that's a pretty important part of any shmup. There are three shot types you'll face in the game. The purple shots can be shot down by your focus and spread shot or destroyed with your sword. Then there is the yellow shot, it can only be destroyed by the sword. Finally there is the red shot. It is indestructible and must be avoided to maintain tension and avoid damage to your shield. You'll face other attacks of course but that's the core bullet mechanics.
As the tension gauge fills you stack up multipliers. Multipliers are only applied for destroying enemies with the sword. Destroying shots with the sword speeds up the charge for your EX Attack, which is a sword ultimate that has three variants depending on whether you use a lock on to modify the attack or just fire it straight. So in order to max out your scoring, you need to use the sword as much as possible, especially the EX Attacks, while maintaining a high level of tension. When you combine this with your standard spread and focus shots, the two types of lock on shots and the sword dashes (which makes you invulnerable) and combos you have a very flexible and intuitive scoring system that is easy to grasp and so much fun to try and master. I think Edelweiss really stepped up with this one.
I use a Dual Shock 3 on my PC with some RealTrigger thingies and the controller is fine.
The analog sticks still have crazy deadzones, so I might crack and pick up an XBone or a PS4 controller when they get official support and maybe get a bit cheaper, because playing any sort of 3D game is kinda silly when you need to use the sticks and there is no resistance at all.
I like the 360 controller enough, but I never use one so I haven't gotten used to it, and I am aware of the D-Pad issues the 360 controller has.
Tough choices with the sales this weekend. State of Decay and Payday 2 are both very tempting but I ended up emptying the wallet out on EU 4. As good as the other two look I can't see myself spending nearly the amount of time with them that I think I will with EU.
Also, I beat Dark Souls 2 yesterday! With an assist from Lord Jesus! Once I got to the final boss I laid down the summon sign to help a bunch of people out until I felt real confident about it. Then when I went to go at it myself I couldn't not summon up Lord Jesus when I saw his sign. Had the hippie hair and the beard and clothing and stuff all spot on. When we went through the fog door Jesus just started chucking lightning bolts and the boss was dead in like ten seconds. Honestly it was a great way to end it after the struggle to get there and didn't even feel cheesy since I'd already beaten him a bunch with other folks.
Fired up Banner Saga courtesy of @akajaybay immediately after. The little bit I've played is very promising although I think I fucked up a bit while still kinda in the tutorials. Still learning names even but I got some dude whose name starts with a V I think killed. They said he was the prince of those giants I play as. That sounds pretty bad to me. Oh well, I'm sure there's many tragic deaths in front of me. We will soldier on!

I like hearing that. One of my main problems with Ether Vapor is that a lot of the time I could just about barely see shots against some backgrounds, and many enemy shots looked very much like your own only pointing in the other direction, which made a complete mess of your peripheral perception. I don't mind hard to navigate patterns but bullets I can barely see REALLY annoy me.
But if things are more clear now I'll toss it on the wishlist, I think.
Dang, The Alamo is a terrible home base location in State of Decay. I started out with that as the only option again. Right now i'm just lasting as long as I can until I get 10 people and can move to the trucking warehouse. At least there are no psychopaths in the group this time, I guess having to start over was a blessing in disguise.
I actually do like the 360 controller for many pc games (because I had a 360 for years, and just recently got a PS3).
This isn't a "I don't agree with you" post, though!
I actually want to figure out how to set up my PS3 controller (dualshock 3) to work on my PC, mainly because my ancient logitech PS2 controller I use exclusively for FFXI (because FFXI won't read the 360 controller triggers without specialized drivers that also dick up every other game it should be native for)is having some wonkiness with one of the analog sticks and I don't really want to have to buy another if I don't have to.
Could anyone point me in the right direction? I will probably use the Pinnacle Profiler I got on sale the other day to set up the controls, I just want to know how to have my PC acknowledge the PS3 controller (ideally wireless, my understanding is that it's bluetooth?), so I can load up a profile. Can anyone point me in the direction of a good guide?
I tried the Rise of Incarnates Alpha. It's very barebones at the moment ( it's alpha so its okay), but there is a lot of potencial there. Couldn't find anyone to play online right now but, the tutorial shows some pretty neat stuff.

I've only done a wired setup. It was pretty straightforward. I just installed a little ditty called Motionjoy which you can find on the google.
Afterward I think if you want to go wireless there is a program called Better DS3 Tool. I'd walk you through it but without a controller of my own i'm not certain how much help I can be. Oh one thing I do recommend is setting up your steam exe file to launch motionjoy automatically so you can cut out the middle-man.
An FTP fighting game with leagues monetization scheme (unlock new characters with play time or money skins with money) seems like something that would do really well

Don't use Motionjoy. It installs adware, has shitty phone-home DRM and has to be run every time you want to use the controller. Instead you should get something like this XInput wrapper or one of the other alternatives.

You know now that I think about it I think I blocked something in motionjoy when I set it up. Good save.
Got Payday 2. Second mission we had a V-100 player on our team. When we dropped bags in the cage on top of the bank he had a ton of them just start coming out of him.
After the mission we got 3.5 million in bag money. Is that some skill or was he exploiting a bug?

I'm not sure what these words actually mean.
does it involve steam sales or something?
What kind did you get? If your answer is anything other than a wired 360, I'd also wager it's not going to be as good as your SIXAXIS.
Ugh I hate the 360 controller, so much.

and the Sixaxis is based off the dualshock which has always been terrible

I think Edelweiss has learned a lot and evolved and refined their approach quite nicely with Astebreed.
I've always liked 360 controllers better than PS3 because of the placement of the left joystick. I feel like it's too low on the PS3.

I've been eyeing a 360-for-PC controller but I think I'm gonna wait till we get an Xbox1-for-PC controller.
Do you have SteamGuard? You should have SteamGuard.
It's sort of weird how the code it gives you is a Steam key, but it doesn't actually mention this.
EDIT: Well, this sure is an error message.
