Lenore used chalk and we got blown up. More blood magic, I say.

    Lenore the Strange

"Why? Is it poison?" Lenore sneered, clutching her head as she sat up.

She trembles as she forces herself to her feet, stumbling toward her gear. Anyone who attempts to help her she forces away. She is clearly angry as she snatches her things up. Whether she was more angry at the situation or herself, who could say. Maybe she was just angry at being seen as potentially vulnerable. She seems determined to not show anymore signs of weakness as she follows after Halek and Naki, one foot before the other and stood-up straight. As though nothing had just happened at all.

"Let's try not to get seperated again," Lenore said. "We don't know where we are now."

Scalrag shrugs and lets Lenore be. He also heads to the stairwell and peeks down.
"The last time we let Naki and Halek go first everything went tits-up. I'll lead this time. Everyone ready? Daelwyn? Karimyr? "

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

"Well, let's hope we don't stumble across another floating human heart with teleporting powers," Hawke grumbles as he joins the others at the stairs.

  • Iron WeaselIron Weasel Dillon! You son of a bitch!Registered User regular
Scalrag smirks. "Your problem, Hawke, is that you aren't open to new experiences. Remember how suspicious you were of those acrobat twins would threw themselves at us in Jarlsbad?"

    He sighs ruefully.

"Of course they did turn out to be Baron Douggal's best assassins. Also his daughters.
Whatever. Totally worth it, am I right?"

He clears his throat. " Anyway - spooky stairs. Here we go." He begins his descent, mindful for trip wires, loose stones and any other sign of traps or trickery.

I'm going to wait for @Kirindal because I still need to know what question to answer for Karimyr before we continue.

"Says the one who didn't get a knife between the ribs from throwing your drunk ass out the window. I still don't get how you couldn't walk straight but managed to tuck into a perfect forward roll."

Hawke fails to suppress a grin before adding, "You're right, though. They were pretty hot."

Yep, Karimyr was fiddling around with the footprint magic puddle. She's wants to know what sort of spell was used. Or failing that, if it sounds a lot like Lenore's own magic then a pointer to who's the caster's sponsor.

    Karimyr, Magus

That was...unexpected. Karimyr blinked as she pulled herself off of the stone floor. Had she triggered some sort of delayed spell when she had touched the magic? Flexing her fingers, Karimyr took quick stock of herself, everything seemed to be in working condition. When Scalrag spoke, Karimyr nodded distractedly as she looked around at their new surroundings. "Yes...yes..."

Daelwyn stands and brushes himself off, "Well, this place doesn't seem nearly as nice as it did a few moments ago. Please tell me that Scalrag has done something foolish."

After he gathers himself, he takes a serious look at their surroundings. What sort of magic were they dealing with here?

  • Iron WeaselIron Weasel Dillon! You son of a bitch!Registered User regular
Scalrag gives Hawke a punch in the shoulder, then shoots Daelwyn a wounded look. "Hey, I had nothing to do with it! Lenore and Karimyr were messing with the magic stuff!"

"Now, if anything weird happens in the next couple of minutes, it probably will be my fault. "

"Yes, please, keep up the loud bickering," Lenore quietly huffed in exasperation. "It's not like we're in a dangerous situation or anything. We should make sure any baddies ahead are aware we're coming.

"I swear," Lenore grumbled in a whisper, securing her shield and hefting her mace. "You are the only thief I know who doesn't understand stealth and surprise."

"And you are the only priestess I know who uses dead animals to talk to her gods instead of praying like a normal person. "

@Kirindal Gonna go with the question "What here is Useful for Valuable to me?" because given the context, information on the spell would be both. Before you were so rudely interrupted, you were able to discern that it was an illusion spell to cover someone's tracks. That's why it disrupted the girl's footprints, because it was an illusion of the undisturbed ground. You'll get +1 Forward on your next roll dealing with any illusions.

@Iron Weasel Scalrag begins to make his way down the stairs, when he catches sight of a shadowed figure standing at the bottom. There might have been a chance of stealth before, but given the conversation that had been going on before, there is very little doubt that the person knows they're there.

Scalrag stops, straightens and speaks to the figure in a clear voice, enough so to be heard by his companions above. "Oh, hello there. I didn't expect to find a person down here. I'm an explorer. Do you need help?"

    He remains vigilant for treachery.

    Assuming we hear him

Halek exchanges a knowing glance with Hawke and starts down the stairwell, bow at the ready.

  • InkSplatInkSplat 100%ed Bad Rats. Registered User regular
"Welcome," the figure says. "Welcome." He sounds like an older man, and as he steps forward into the limited light pouring down the stairway, you can see that that is definitely the case. He is dark-skinned with grey hair, wearing the clothing of a servant and a smile on his face. "Please, come with me." He speaks with a strange accent, though it seems fairly familiar.

Lenore would recognize it almost immediately as that of an elder of her tribe speaking the common tongue.

    Lenore the Strange

Hearing the familiar accent of her native people, a puzzled Lenore rushes up the stairs past Halek. Dashing into the room she comes to a stop behind Scalrag, seeing the elder there greeting them. "Elder?" Lenore bemused. She nods to Halek approvingly as she follows. "Elder, why are you here?"

    Karimyr, Magus

Interesting and very worrying... Karimyr followed behind Halek and Hawke as she digested this revelation. To what end did whoever kidnapped the girl have for her? This was a lot of effort for a single child, was she supposed to be the linchpin of some working? Remembering what Lenore had spoken to her in the past of her Gods, Karimyr was all too ready to entertain the possibility that the child was going to be sacrifice to appease one or the other. They would all need to hurry if this was going to be the...

Karimyr stopped short, right behind Hawke and raised her hand slightly ready to let loose some magic if necessary. Shadowed things always seemed to move so damned fast.

The old man looks up at Lenore and smiles.

"Ah, Child," he says, "not expecting you. But welcome all the same. Please, come with me. The Mistress will explain everything." He gestures behind him, down the hallway where you can't see.

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

Magic bullshit teleports us gods-know-where, and next person we meet is a zoned-out geezer trying to bring us before his 'Mistress?' Yeah, this isn't suspicious at all.

Hawke catches up with the group down the stairs and says, "I hate to interrupt, Lenore, but we should still be looking for Julia. We can catch up with your mentor when we're not working."

Hawke doesn't expect her to actually listen to him, but he's using the confrontation as a pretext to examine the geezer. He's seen people get their brains magically bent before, so he's looking for the telltale signs. Eyes not quite focusing, delayed reactions, etc. It could be a little creepy how hard he's staring.

If InkSplat had another name in mind for the little girl, just pretend I said that. I don't remember getting a name, but Hawke would have certainly asked for it before setting out. Don't want to rescue the wrong girl lost in time and space, after all.

Edit:At least I'm going to level up sooner!

Julia is fine! I had meant to ask you guys her name in the beginning, and totally spaced it!

Hawke eyes the man at the bottom of the steps, attempting to discern what he can. And then the man looks back. Looks through him. Looks in to him. The soldier sees fire, red and black, swirling...alive. He hears his own heart beating loud in his ears. He hears a little girl screaming for her mother. He sees that man he once fought so hard to protect dying despite his best efforts. He feels all of his worst fears come rushing to the surface. He sees it all in the eyes of this nonthreatening old man.

Everyone else would simply see the smiling figure at the bottom of the steps, not even paying any attention to the grumbling swordsman.

@CapFalcon -1 Forward when dealing with the old man, and, I'll offer you an XP if you act irrationally due to the visions/fear, but that's totally up to you, and doesn't have to be right this second.

Not that it's massively important, but this post, indicated the little girl is named Rosalin. It doesn't really matter, as long as we're all looking for the same kid

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

Hawke's face blanches as he involuntarily takes a step back, sword half out of it's sheath. He sees his companions turn to look at him with varying degrees of concern and surprise, but before anyone can say anything, he half-yells, "What? Does no one else think just following him without getting any answers is just crazy?"

He shoots Scalrag a pleading look, clearly hoping the thief backs him up.

Scalrag nods. "I'm with Hawke on this one. I mean, following the spooky old man down the spooky tunnel to meet his spooky leader, no questions asked? Really? Like, really-really?"

He pauses. "Then again, five'll get you ten that this Mistress knows something about the girl. Gods, I hate rigged games."

Halek walks up to Hawke and speaks in a hushed tone, intending that only he should hear.

"Listen, I'm as suspicious as you, but we don't have a lot of options. What's the plan, tie him up? Kill him? Ignore him completely and just continue on as if we hadn't just seen the creepy old man? Better to keep him in front of us, and keep your guard up."

He then turns to the rest of the group and funny gesture with his arms and head towards Hawke and the old man, hoping to convey the idea that someone who's a bit better at conversing with strangers should at least ask about Rosalin before we continue on.

    Lenore

Lenore sighs and rolls her eyes at her companions behavior - because whispering to each other in isolation was never suspicious. A little magic and they act like frightened children. She continues to follow along, having her own suspicions but keeping them to herself as she held her mace firmly in her right hand.

    Hawke, ex-Legionnaire

Hawke is forced to admit to himself that he doesn't have a better idea. And Scalrag is right. He'd bet his tankard that this "Mistress" knows something about the girl. With uneasy resignation, he falls in line with the rest of the party.

But he never takes his eyes off the old man.

  • InkSplatInkSplat 100%ed Bad Rats. Registered User regular
Sorry for the delay guys, I wasn't totally sure you were all set on following.

The old man nods with a smile as you all make your way down the stairs.

"Excellent," he says. "Welcome. This way." And then he begins to walk down the corridor.

The way is sparingly lit at first, but as you continue on for a few minutes, the torches become more common, and the stones become smoother, and eventually a simple carpet begins, which seems to smoothly transition to something far more elegant as you continue on. It all leads to a finely carved door, which the man opens and gestures inside.

"Please, enter and wait," he requests of you. "The Mistress with arrive soon."

You can see from outside that the room is very well appointed. The bit of wall you can see is taken up by a packed bookcase, and a comfortable-looking armchair peeks out as well. The crackling of a fireplace can also be heard.

Karimyr brought her hand down as Hawke abruptly took a step backwards not wanting to accidentally fire off a spell into Hawke's back if things went sour. Since everyone else was moving forwards, she supposed she had to trust in their good judgment for the time being, otherwise it was going to be a lonely trek to find a way out of wherever they had ended up. When they entered the room, Karimyr decided to take an circuit of the room to take in everything before joining Lenore at the bookshelf. "You seem familiar with the old man. Is this one of your people's...temples?"
