Good game tonight guys. I like Slark. I like him a lot. He is just so fun to run and gank folks with.

Funny that game there were many moments, even the fight where I got a triple kill that my lag went bonkers.

I think my roommate is downloading something since they are both back. It was weird.

Still tons of fun tonight guys.

I'm just glad I could pass on my secret WK techniques to milk_ducks. Namely being too beefy to kill. Also having aegis so you are literally unkillable cause by the time you die the second time your ult is back up so you never use the aegis!

On a side note the new 1v1 matchmaking is awesome.

It's the perfect thing when I'm in the mood for 10 minutes of Dota.

You know what...if you're playing in a room with your buddy, I'm fine with that. But for the love of christ don't use a non headset mic so that every time you talk we're cascaded with a barrage of echo thru your buddy's mic. Also, I know its cute is to shit up the coms with ribald dick and ball talk, but if you beat it into the ground...sorta loses the humor.

Seriously, the 1v1 mid thing is great. While I on one hand I'd like to see the mode fleshed out with surfaced MMR stats, I think that may be to the detriment of the atmosphere of the thing

I've got about 2 dozen games played which is admittedly a small sample size but so far it has been fairly relaxed, with the focus being in practice as opposed to going for the super tryhard win. Like, if they did make it a proper competitive mode I worry it would be full of people going for the cheesiest strats possible just to get the win

After playing a few games with Chen:

The hardest part of playing Chen isn't the micro-management, it's ordering your pub team around and getting the hang of your recall. Just getting pubs to stun at a very precise time so you can chain with centaur/troll is like pulling teeth, nevermind getting them together for tower pushing (Obligatory "at least you directly control your jungle army lol"). Timing recall correctly is a pain when combined with the judgement call "am I sure this guy is going to die if I don't do something?/can we turn this around if I don't recall him?"

He's a high skill hero alright.

Pretty sure those are chests you can buy without needing keys, or something.

Anyway, 1v1 mid mode is interesting. I guess I've picked "easy" heroes so far, given that I've tried to up my game with Viper and Huskar (They're good, but I don't feel dominant enough with them considering they are orb walkers with huge damage output and mitigation), and I've just encountered insanity.

People manfighting viper (especially pudge; pudge couldn't get the kill first in a manfight if he had a DD and was under tower). People taking potshots from Huskar for no reason. People manfighting the Huskar that just killed them.

It's weird. Maybe I should do something wacky, like push Jakiro.

I futzed around with 1v1. Did PA. I am just fascinated by her but I suck at her. And was like why not?

I fought a pudge. It took them like 20 minutes to kill me.

I was mostly trying to get last hit and dagger timing verse something a bit smarter than the AI.

    They were actually probably dumber.

    Great fun was had tonight.

Game one, we had the late game Void to rip people's faces off. I have never participated actively in so many teamfights with so few kills; every single fight I'd run in, CC, drop wards, shackle, and die before shackle ended. Milk and Mazzy on Rikki and Slark kept us in it midgame. It wasn't exactly a huge come from behind victory; I don't think that we were ever too far back, but they made it really uncomfortable for us and I'm happy that we mostly played smart, actively defended, and never fell into the mindset that we'd lost the game.

Game two was, as the kids say, epic lulz. Three bottles on the other team, none on the mid hero? They tried to counter-pick us, but I suspect that none of them really had any interest in playing support. Pudge died to Son, then abandoned - and since he was part of a four person stack, the rest of his team would get an abandon too. Naga and Clock top lane couldn't handle the MIGHT of Crystal Maiden and Shadow Demon, and we bullied the heck of them in lane. Windranger took on two bottom, and (almost) got first blood.

I need to watch that game. Ideally with some popcorn. It was not a good game, but it was the perfect way to end the night.

AI is skilled but predictable. Humans have variable skill and may do weird things like miss denies in order to let the ranged creep get it (instead of giving them a small window to get a true deny before you last hit it, this turns the tables and gives you an incredible small window or else you just get EXP), and actually do things to the creep wave besides plink things that are exactly 1 hit away from death .25 seconds after they enter that state (on Hard, anyway).

Unfortunately I either seem to encounter people who throw the game getting dumb, or people who AFK sniper by hitting 5 with a bottle and Qing the tower until it dies (it's going to die around minute 8 guaranteed).

I think the worst "getting dumb" I've seen are a WR who was up 1:0 on me (playing Huskar) time out on her DD, while halfway done with a blademail. OK, she coulda chipped me with it. OK, she throws a yolo shackle and misses. OK, she... activates windrun? And she didn't rank her ult. And she runs right at me, then only begins to leave after I've already hit her enough she will burn to death. Well, probably thought she hit the shackle. Then she dies contesting a rune for no reason.

Then there was the Pugna. I was playing Huskar again, and he was just going tower chunking. Boring, but all I wanted to do was kill him because there's zero reason he should ever die in this matchup since he can just W out of any engagement and outpush me. He WQ's me randomly, puts down ward, I towerdive, he gets first blood and then dies, he buys back, he chunks the tower to <100 HP... then I respawn and instead of walking up, using Q, and forcing a fortify before winning five seconds later, he does the same thing as before and starts ulting me, bragging about his win as he burns to death.

I just don't get it. You know you're going pusher/trying to poke until blademail. Why not stay the course?

Nyx man; I sometimes go on long breaks from the hero and forget how wickedly fun it is to pick him vs. scrub tier Drow and Sniper players. (Also Pudge to a lesser degree) They are always greedy as fuck with their items and positioning, lustily running up behind their teammates to get kill streaks and no one ever packs dust until it's already far too late. And man do I love chunking Drow players...

Great games last night, everyone. That first game was a little rocky, but we made it out okay in the end. Some of it had to do with my inexperience with Riki. I played my first game with him about 3 days ago, and I've been playing him consistently since, but I still have a lot to learn. The biggest issue for me at the moment is with regard to the boots that I should pick up. Everyone tells me something different: Treads give higher damage and attack speed; Phasers also give damage, along with higher speed; Tranquils give some armor, along with movement speed and regeneration between ganks.

I've largely just been playing it by ear, and seeing how each game goes. The reason I chose Tranquils last night was because I was being very badly harassed in lane by Disruptor, and I needed an immediate source of regeneration so I wouldn't get bullied out of lane. I've actually had the most success with Tranquils at this point, because they help me move around the map quickly to gank and aggressively ward, and they keep my health topped off as I'm moving. This allows me to delay a Vlad's (if we need one) in favor of agility items after I finish Diffusal 1.

Its hard to say which pair of boots is "correct", though. There were definitely times that game where I felt like I needed to be able to chase down enemies better, but I also had a Diffusal Blade that I wasn't using to slow people down, which is just an inexperience issue on my part. I know you can do it, but I sometimes forget to do so.

I think the enemy team coordination has to be taken into accoun too. They had big team fight potential in ES, Disruptor, Puck, Silencer and Abaddon. Quite a bit of sustain and Abaddon is quite a strong carry once he gets going. Nearly died once jumping into chrono but the global ult went off as soon as they saw me. In the end I'd just hang back until the global ult ended (so I'd also be safe from Puck and ES too along with silencer's disarm). With Rikki tough I'd say you should try to farm more as opposed to aggressively trying to gank (especially that game when they were five manning very quickly). At that stage you can just play Bounty Hunter instead if you're just after ganks. Also carry a TP scroll. Always.

    Thanks for the games tonight.

That last game I knew was bad when I knew there was no way for me to stop that Naga. I was just completely zoned or I died. The sven and Nyx guarding her plus her net meant my windrun couldn't do anything.

And then we started rotating, taking towers we ignored her and she got a tower alone and a free farm lane. It was bad.

They really did just out play us though. Good movement. Good team comp. Naga used that song well to counter initiate. We just never could group up and really gain momentum in that late game though. Naga was so strong it was like PL but worse since her illusions are always super tanky.

Bleaurgh. After a ridiculously long losing streak, my MMR has finally plummeted down into the 1K bracket. I've been trying to escape by exclusively playing support, warding/dewarding/buying dust like mad, and sticking to a few heroes that I feel I can play well. For the most part I feel like I have been playing a lot better, but I'm still losing match after match. It probably hasn't helped that I've had some goose on my team DC every match. Alternatively, I could just be terribad at this game without realising how terribad I am.

I'm not going to quit or anything because fundamentally I still enjoy playing Dota. I don't mind losing a close match where we simply got outplayed but losing so many matches in a row is kind of...disheartening, I guess.

It's not all grim though, I got some face tentacles for Faceless Void in a random drop today!

I'm not upset about our performance at all, to be honest. Like you said, I really think we just got out-played. It will happen from time to time, as we continue to advance upward in MMR. I just want to make sure we always learn from the experience. Like, their coordination in that game was better than almost any other team we've played: every single time a rune was about to spawn, Nyx would transition into the river to zone me out. He would always go bottom, and Skywrath would always go top. So my choices were to contest Skywrath up top, or face off against Nyx on bottom. Either option sucks.

Even though my timing was decent, and I'd push the lanes forward in order to secure myself some space to grab the rune, it didn't matter -- Skywrath and Nyx were always there, working together. The first time I got zoned out of the rune, it wasn't the biggest deal for me. The second and third times it happened, I was really desperate for mana. I can't push the lane out to give myself space without mana. I can't protect myself from ganks without mana. I can't swing into top and bottom lanes for ganks without mana.

What they did was really smart, and its something that we need to do more often. And by "more often", I mean like, "literally every game". Supports should swing in to watch the runes as often as possible. And once our mid secures the rune, we can use it to facilitate ganks anywhere that could use it.
