91 Honda Accord - Dashboard Whacked

Hey All.

Driving home from Easter festivities today, my Dashboard decided to act all sorts of strange. My speedometer fluctuated for about five minutes then settled at zero, my Sport Mode/Overdrive light was blinking, my parking brake light turned on, my anti-lock light turned on, and my check engine light turned on.

Lately I have been noticing a strange sound during startup, most likely the starter, but the car has no trouble actually getting started.

Any idea what's going on here? If it's just a simple electrical malfunction, I don't mind driving a while and saving some cash to get it taken care of. If it's something serious I'll see about getting some repair money on the quick.

Thanks for any help!

Sounds like an issue with your vehicle speed sensor. You DONT have ABS brakes, btw, with the light on.

Is your traction control light on too (if so equipped?)

    Get it taken care of.

91's have a mechanical speedometer cable. I'd be willing to bet that the dashboard has managed to short itself out. If so it's basically as easy as taking the dash apart and replacing the gauge cluster. This is one of those jobs i'd take to a professional, because taking apart the dash is a complete pain in the ass.

You also want to get it fixed sooner rather than later, as it's illegal to drive with a non-working speedometer.

Alright, sounds fair enough to me. How much should a job like this run?

Well, It'd really depend on the shop's hourly rate. But i'd be expecting a few to several hundred dollars for it. its a pretty time intensive task to take apart the dash without breaking anything and an equally intensive task to get it all put together again. As eggy says it is illegal to drive with a nonworking speedometer, plus its good to know how fast you're going :)
