Yes, anyone on the fence should buy XCOM: Enemy Unknown and the expansion Enemy Within immediately.

You can disable DLC in the Steam client now, so if you just want to play vanilla to get your feet wet, you can, then activate the expansion later.

I bought enemy within tonight, and when I launched xcom after it updated it simply asked me which i wanted to play, so it's pretty easy to swap between it appears.

You know it's Steam sale time when you look at your wishlist, see a full price 60 dollar game, and think to yourself "Man, people are going to think I'm a begging asshole having that game on my wishlist right now...".

@Big Classy‌ hit me with Far Cry 3 while I was at work!!!

Unfortunately I had to decline as I have almost 100%ed it on xbox and would never play it again, but Isy is so classy!

And @Krummith‌ wasn't far behind him with Nekro! Which I was super excited about since last PAX!!

    Thank you both!

Note: this is only the first day.... I'm not sure I can survive this much class!

also: when was the sale last year?

Not likely. In the past vote sales have 99 percent of the time been the same price as their dailies.

However given it is a high profile title it'll probably reappear if you're wanting to play it safe.

I mean, don't get me wrong. There's at least a dozen things about XCOM - and Enemy Within - that I'd change. But that goes double for Shadowrun Returns.

    Such as? Genuinely curious.

I wrote up an impressions post here, but some highlights and other thoughts:

    - clearer rules about how combat works. It took a long time before I realized that my chance-to-hit was based on distance from the target and the weapon I had out. Once I knew that, I still had to trial and error my way to finding the optimum distance for each category.

    - Clearer rules in general: I'm still not sure why I can sometimes bring two people into Cyberspace and sometimes can't.

    - Cyberspace combat (I feel) ought to work differently than meatspace combat. I don't really have a firm idea of how, you understand, but when I think of "runs" and "cyberspace" I go to Delta V and System Shock. I played a little of the more recent card game and was quite happy with that representation, once I got a feel for it.

    - maybe it was just the difficulty, but I felt like everyone - both my team and whatever dudes I was fighting - missed a solid 85% of the time. So it's just dozens of turns of "you miss"; "they miss". Find some way to make this more dynamic.

    - A general rule I have is that magic ought to be something more than 'colored bullets'. This is not exactly a slam against Shadowrun Returns, except insofar as it contains magic spells that are little more than that. Some of them sometimes slowed the enemies, and that was nice.

    - Add a paper-doll system for equipment. If nothing else, something more than just the one "armor" slot. Add the ability to equip my party members - less so in DMS, more so in Dragonfall.

    - I was often unsure whether a given tile would offer me LoS on an enemy, and the game's simple "red triangle" was not helpful in that regard. Give me a square or something to differentiate it from the other debuffs.

    - a multi-turn movement queue

    - Spend some time working on the movement grid - it doesn't always load, it's hard to select certain tiles in certain situations

    - I'd definitely add some sort of bestiary. With movement speeds and effects and whatnot.

    - More combat options. All you have are "fire", "grenade", and "magic". Flanking shots, hunker down, guaranteed criticals if you're on a ley line; something.

I know this all sounds like I hate the game, but I really don't. Each is really just a minor inconvenience; easily ignored or circumvented. It's a very solid piece of work, with very enjoyable writing and a really neat world. The dialogue trees are amazing. I just feel the combat needs to be better and more dynamic. About the only time I was engaged with the combat (so far) was when I was kiting ghouls in the sewers, and even that was just because I had to count tiles to make sure they weren't going to run into melee range.

All the same, as much as I've heard it's a pretty great game, I would say you should hold off for moral reasons.

Less than 50% off during a steam sale? That's just insulting.

So it says XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a daily deal with 39 hours counting down, but on the front page it has the daily deals listed with a 15 hour count down. If I wait for a flash deal on the XCOM game, will the daily deal expire in the 15 hours or is it safe to wait the 39ish?

There's no point to wait for flash sales on a daily deal. They're the same thing.

But all daily deals last 48 hours so stragglers have time to pick them up either way.

Ah, so then flash sales don't occur on already discounted games? Basically I'm worried that as soon as I purchase this thing it'll go on super sale at -99% off or something.

No. Votes = Dailies = Flash sales. The idea behind flash sales is just so they can get more games on the front page really. Won't happen to a daily deal. The daily might reappear as a flash sale but it'll be the same discount.
