    The seventh quarter at Ubicon opened with only four board members reaching any solid conclusions on activities for the quarter, and some poor performance. Despite several weeks of surveillance, the team tasked with assessing the strengths and remaining capabilities of Tellex failed to turn up any useful information. Whatever Tellex was doing, they were mildly competent at hiding how they were doing it.

    The lack of intelligence on Tellex heightened the severity of the agents posted to guard Ubicon facilities. Agent detail contributed firepower and awareness, where on-staff security might otherwise fail to respond in time.

    A number of agents also spent the quarter driving around looking for "Uruk-HAI Weapons Inc.", only for it later to be realized they were looking for "Uruk-Kai Weapons Inc."

    It was decided by decree from two executives that the Oberon corporation would be stripped of its science corp. Oberon was a much better target then OpenSystems, and fully 10 agents descended on it for the operation.

    Unfolding over the course of several weeks, the scientists were studied and followed in their daily commutes too and from Oberon. Dr Conlaoch Ruskin was easily grabbed from a local strip club, and the simplicity of the operation spurred on some more aggressive actions. Attempts at blockading roads however failed to slow down two other scientists, although a third was apprehended easily when he stumbled into an Ubicon agent on the street near the Oberon campus. The agent slapped the cuffs on and hauled him into an alleyway before beating him unconscious.

    Dr Arawn Salcedo was eventually acquired late at night on the Oberon campus itself, bringing the total to three out of four science team members.

    As the operation closed out, there was a feeling that it might represent a total success - acquiring the entire science corp of an organization in one sweep was a standing goal amongst the agent teams. However as the final weeks dragged on, it became apparent Oberon was simply too aware of the dangers. Multiple attempts to grab Dr Yolanda MacMathan were thwarted by increased security measures and her personal safety protcols, and the team never succeeded in acquiring her. Her colleagues however were interrogated and passed over to human resources, and became productive assets for the remainder of the quarter.

    Internally at Ubicon, the new security recruiting offices were greenlit and approved. The human resources departments of the company would now include a staff of dedicated recruiters for rapidly screening and approving new security staff. In the modern corporate world, security staff were essentially expendable, but it was still necessary to ensure that you didn't hire someone who would attack you from within. With a suite of specialized lie-detecting equipment, alongside whatever experimental hardware the research team needed to test on the general public, Ubicon was set to increase the quality of its on-site security staff and the rate at which new agents would join the team.

    As the quarter rolled along, it looked like the guard duties of the agents around Ubicon would once again be in vain. Speculation was rife: maybe Tellex was some type of front? Maybe they were biding their time - building a super-weapon of some kind? Maybe their management was simply deluded into thinking they would somehow recover? In the middle of the quarter though, all bets were suddenly off. And yet no agent on guard duty would witness an actual attack either.

    The team of 5 men wasn't spotted as particularly noteworthy by Ubicon security as they entered the Testing facility. Staff just beginning their day took no notice as they moved to the far reaches of the Immigrant Robotics proving area - and it was not until the agents opened up with a hail of gunfire that they did.

    For whatever reason, Testing had been de-prioritized as a guarded location. By and large the engineers didn't like the testing department - too concerned with showing how "idiots can break things" as they put it. And if there were no agents, then there definitely wasn't going to be any internal security - a sea of employees presented to the incoming hail of bullets.

    If there was an upside to the event, it was that the agents were clearly not very well trained. An intern only 4 meters away from one was only grazed by the first shot, and had the presence of mind to start running as the agents opened fire and continued to fire on the packed building. It had been feared since Ubicon's first attempt that they were face reprisal assassination attempts on their co-workers, and evacuation drills had been ordered by the board for just such an occurrence.

    Bullets thudded and exploded into products and test rigs, and an observant Immigrant unit triggered a chain reaction as it tried to mimic the death throes of its technican, and was promptly copied by 100 other units in attempting to throw itself to the floor.

    Ultimately however, the evacuation drill saved lives. As the Tellex agents ran out of ammo and made their escape, only 8 Ubicon employees bodies were recovered by security in the aftermath, and were promptly and quietly incinerated. An active campaign of distraction and employee rotation was immediately commenced, and internal media suppression ensured that by the end of the quarter the new staff of the Ubicon Testing facility had no idea that anything had happened, beyond a vague notion that the red stains were "what happens when you're not careful" - it was assumed referring to test rig operation.

    In the wake of the Tellex attack, something very odd happened later that month. While staff were being replaced and the event actively suppressed as middle management did its role, what looked like another assassin team strolled into the Testing facility yet again - in greater numbers. The security team was racing as it was fully believed that this time Tellex may have returned to finish the job...but instead nothing happened.

    The evacuation order was given, the employees left in an orderly fashion and then so did the agents, with zero casualties on either side. Retrospective analysis would show that the involved parties had not been Tellex, but rather members of the supposedly radical and violent Human Initiative. They'd seen, they'd come, but then they'd wandered off and the board was left to speculate on what exactly had happened.

    The LabAssistant robotics and new members of the research team allowed the research work to fly by for the quarter. Dr Stane beamed as the new prototype Android Cleaner diligently tidied and vacuumed around the presentation hall, even successfully catching things thrown at it and disposing of them with its chest mounted trash compactor.

    The research team was forecasting big profits for the line, and a whole new area of exploration in converting the Human Environment Interaction software into an advanced model that would move beyond basic cleaning tasks and be able to replace human assistants with robotic ones.

    There was also a proposal to repurpose the basic frame as a possible android combat platform the military robotics line, although trials had shown the software simply didn't fight as effectively as a human. It was speculated that some type of remote control haptics might work around the problem - agent teams could be augmented with remotely controlled robotics with the right research.

    It was towards the end of the quarter that the news rolled in. The board had already assembled for its quarterly decisions. The distinctive shape of the mushroom cloud blooming over the Samsung campus told everything that the news was reporting, not entirely unexpected and yet surprising at the same time to actually see.

    The world is in crisis tonight as the ongoing conflict between Apple Corp and Samsung escalated today. Reports are still sketchy, but we have confirmed that multiple nuclear detonations occurred at various facilities owned by both companies all over the globe. Casualty reports are in the tens of thousands. It is unclear who struck first or what led to this deadly escalation, but this event marks only the second time in history that corporate competition has led to a nuclear confrontation.

    Analysts have downgraded the profit outlook of both companies, as the coming months are expected to be a scramble to for each to consolidate it's gains. World indexing giant Google has yet to weigh in on any side of the dispute, but smaller firms have been quick to declare allegiances amidst the threat of reprisals. The US Congress has joined an emergency session to discuss the matter, but little is expected of it as the voting gridlock enter its second decade just this year...

    "The Phone War" had entered a hot period yet again it would seem. The use of nuclear arms was an unexpected development amongst the technology giants - maybe both were looking to decisively end the conflict? Lawyers and analysts had workshopped several such scenarios and the conclusion was always the same: the megacorps would obliterate each other, but in the meantime agents and sycophant supporters would be targeting anyone who didn't tow the line for their preferred side.

    Casiawa could reliably expect to get rich off immigration looking to escape possible fallout, though the Japanese were usually the ones who cleaned up in the end. Profits for the next quarter would be flat too.

    PR
    Send agents to repair damage to Ubicon's profile regarding the recent public attacks. Publicity with agents can yield a boost in profits, but suitably desperate corporations will frequently stage high profile assassinations at these events.

    THREATEN <organization>
    While dead corporations are the easiest to deal with, threatening the lives of employees and staff of a corporation can be highly effective in reducing the effectiveness and morale of low level employees. It can also prompt staff to switch corporations.

    ASSASSINATE <organization>
    Send agents to remove elements of a corporations work force. Will greatly alarm corporations and the public. Assassination missions have been known to end with entire corporate facilities being wiped off the map.

    HEIST <organization> <amount as a decimal fraction i.e 0.1>
    Send agents to steal funds from an organization. Difficulty scales with volume to take. Corporations in debt will be robbed of their quarterly profits.

    KIDNAP <organization>
    Attempt to kidnap a scientist from another corporation, and put them to work in your own labs. The scientific community has become surprisingly accustomed to this manner of recruitment.

    Well, that could have gone better. It also could have gone a lot worse. Ubicon has a nicely hardened campus but it could be harder, and dedicated security guards are needed. I'm prioritizing cashflow this quarter but next quarter my vote will be for Advanced Construction Techniques. I've heard good things about a certain line of automated sentry guns, and building dormitories for security guards is priority number one once we have the technology.

    A second manufacturing wing will allow us to keep production levels high if we are sabotaged again. As far as the war goes, let's not get involved just yet- our defenses are weak, and if we're going to either stay neutral or pick a side we need to improve them.

    I'm sending a team to the neighbors this quarter. Seize whatever they have, acquire whatever employees they have, eliminate the ones who don't comply, and bring the building down after us. The new guy gets to carry the bomb.

    Gentlemen, the phone war has blown way out of proportion, and I cannot believe that nuclear war is best for the bottom line. I am with others that we should not declare our allegiance just yet. We can afford the public relations hit for the moment so that we can get a better feel for the conflict.

    As for research, while haptics would allow an agent to essentially rig himself with the drones in question, I feel that being able to teach the drones would be more effective. They would be able to learn and adapt more quickly to the combat environment, and maybe with a neural net or black box we can even have drones that have been damaged and recovered after an engagement be able to upload and teach their fellow drones. The black box option may be the better fail safe so that if drones become self aware, they do not upload to drones around them.

    For building, As much as I'd like more manufacturing, I think that a second security dormitory would be prudent. When we've been attacked, it was always with more than 5 enemy combatants. I am aware that security personnel are not as effective as field agents, but having 4 security personnel in each building would help harden our defenses from corporate and anti-corporate aggressors. I wonder if it would be possible to address security protocols to make our agents on guard duty more effective. Security personnel provide enough of a defense to allow for a RAPID RESPONSE TEAM of our Agents to move and defend the building under attack

    Tellex is a freaking brick wall. They've seen us go at them with numbers, maybe something will surface if we go in with a smaller team. We've also not heard anything pertinent with the Casiawa Council, so I'd like to know what is happening there as well. We need to get in on their construction project and the last time we worked with them, was the escort mission. Also, we have a large think tank now, our greatest asset, I've deployed my newer agents to guard them so that they can acclimatize to our corporate culture.

    OpenSystems is easy pickings. Why not gobble it up when we have the chance? Tellex, while our main rival, isn't the only game in town. Meridian's been quiet lately, and we can influence Casiawea directly now that we know where and when the Council comes to the surface.

    Speaking of Casiawea, where are we going with it? Should we threaten the executives or kidnap them instead? Tellex was only a thorn because they stole the contract from underneath our noses, and we've got a golden opportunity to snatch it back.

    The Casiawa Council is bascially a city council for the undersea city of Casiawa. They are basically a government organization and more of a client than a competitor. (For game purposes, the Council kinda functions like a corporation but it most definitely isnt a corporation)

    We've been trying through the last few quarters to sabotage everything we could with Tellex in regards to Casiawa so that we could bring in our own services.
    Casiawa is primarily a sub-sea farming enterprise from the initial game reports. They excel at protein folding and from the buzz words in the report, its a *stable food source*, and very scalable. Think surimi (imitation crab meat).

    What this means for us as Ubicon Dynamics is that we can provide a drone work/construction force for an undersea city. We can sell drones to do very dangerous work, and with a bit more research, we can actually sell them drones with advanced haptic capabilities. This means that you still need a human to do the work, but they are in a super safe area controlling the drone remotely. (A VERY BIG PR thing I'd assume, since we are creating *safer* jobs, not taking them away with robots). With advanced teaching methods, we can make those haptic robots able to learn from their operators so that the operators become more efficient workers as the drone they drive learns the idiosyncrocies of that worker's inputs.

    But none of that happens as long as Tellex is doing whatever it is they do. (I'm assuming they are also something that can provide construction, but probably actually using humans or providing gear for them, or else we wouldn't be in competition with them for a contract)


    I don't think it is in our interests to threaten the Casiawa Council, but we need to know what their disposition is and what we can do to cinch a contract if not outright steal it from Tellex.

    I've been merrily voting for Psychology research for what seems like too long. Let's talk about why we need to branch out into this new field:
    • NeuromarketingIf you know how customer brains work then you can sell them more shit at optimized price points. And best of all, they can't say no if you do it right
    • AI A good worker is a hyper intelligent worker that will one day turn on you and imprison you inside a weird bladder thing to feed on your bioelectrical energy. And maybe we can put robotic brains into our agents. Just because.
    • Persuadatrons Right now we're unable to mobile poorly armed groups to fight our battles for us. This is just no way to live.
    • Ammo-related savings Every bullet we fire eats into our profit margins. If we can start winning through propaganda or having enemy agents use their bullets for our causes then that just helps the bottom line

    Heavy fighting continues between the Apple and Samsung megacorporations in the wake of the limited scale nuclear exchange amongst their main campuses almost a week ago. Corporate mercenaries of both factions have been sighted exchanging fire in cities across the globe, and the number of employee disappearances and unexplained deaths continues to grow.

    Several governments have issued strong denouncements of the behavior, with a rare proclamation by the US senate that the use of nuclear weapons "does not represent the best interests of a free market". A number of pro-business groups have issues strong rebuttals, noting that so far the casualties of the limited nuclear warfare have solely been employees of both companies. Nonetheless, government military forces are being held at an unprecedented level of mobilization in response and anger amongst the general public continues to grow.

    Intern Mathers finished speaking and looked over the board carefully. It hadn't been clearly established by the other analysts exactly why he, at only 6 months tenure and reduced salary, was being sent to give what seemed like an important presentation to the top brass of the company. Though it wasn't hard to guess. Despite best efforts, rumors seemed to persist of the fate of Special Assistant Manly. The Briefcase bombs were all too real - you could wander down to the executive manufacturing wing and see them being made. But Ubicon was only a couple of years old - it surely hadn't had time to become as callous as the decadal megacorps like the ones which were presently killing each other by the hundreds in various cities across the globe.

    The presentation itself had been straight forward - the lawyers, marketers and science team had all wanted to weigh in on the most recent "Phone War" developments. The background of the conflict data to 2027, when the ongoing legal battles and started to escalate after speculation surrounded the rather proximate deaths of legal teams and experts in patent dispute cases. Things had been brewing before then, but by the time actual violence had entered the equation the world was a decade into corporate militarization and the rest as they said, was history.

    The board as usual was inscrutable. Rumor had it no one ever saw the same set of people when they interacted with them. As his phone beeped - a hopefully non-controverisal Chinese model, that eschewed curved edges and used clearly non-infringing bezel widths, it was clear they'd reached a decision.

    A4 glowed the screen. The board had voted not to take a position on the engagement. Mathers thanked them for his time and left, making a mental note to take a quite different route home from work today. Avoiding Apple and Samsung stores was tricky these days...

    It had been known for some time that Casiawa's Council had a small presence on the surface as well as beneath the oceans in the city major. The high-pressure environment inside the dome meant that there was a fairly high rate of odd failures in equipment that worked fine on the surface - computer electronics was most susceptible, in the short term magnetic media air handling could fail catastrophically from the pressure differential, and in the long term a number of instances of IC failure had been attributed to the diffusion of helium across hermetic packaging and into silicon junctions.

    The modest recon team at the Casiawa Council essentially confirmed these reports - it was little more then a holding company, with no on site funds and a single researcher managing a high-pressure test chamber. The team nonetheless noted that it should be possible to acquire Dr Lundquist, although the poor relations with Casiawa could turn outright hostile from such an action - "but all bridges can be mended" concluded the report.

    There was some confusion amongst the agents as to why they were revisiting OpenSystems. The company had been a walking corpse since their research staff was removed. The remaining employees had allowed it to struggle on, but as essentially a defunct think-tank, what was really the point? A few not so subtle warnings to mid-level managers seemed to have the desired result - staff reports of managerial absence increased, and employees wiled away the day frequently doing nothing. A casing of Archives still revealed nothing to steal, and the operation was rounded out by a single agent breaking in and gunning down a few employees - although their evacuation protocols still seemed most effective.

    The mission for the quarter over at Tellex had more vigor behind it. Unlike OpenSystems, Tellex were a modern and active threat. The agents on point had received a few "go get 'ems!" from employees who, against company policy, still remembered the attack on Ubicon. The new weapons manufacturing facilities had allowed manufacturing to churn out a few new tools, and the AC-637 submachine gun was one of them. Sacrificing damage for rate of fire, it fired low velocity 5.56mm hollow point ammunition, which Ubicon scientists had custom tooled to drop a load of sulfuric acid into the victim on impact. The effect was pretty marginal compared to the ballistics, but it was assured that the measure would greatly reduce the effectiveness of ballistic armor.

    The newly identified Uruk-kai Weapons Inc. was another odd-duck neighbor for Ubicon it seemed. The firm was definitely weapons-oriented and definitely active, but it looked to be in a very early phase of development. It's funding was modest, not overpowering, and its offices were entirely construction facilities, which didn't make a terrific amount of sense unless it was a startup. It's cash on hand suggested that, and the agent dossiers on its inventories seemed to confirm this - UKW had it's own submachine gun and assault rifle variants, and more worryingly something the science teams at Ubicon couldn't understand yet - JU-235 "Stun Gas". That was something far outside of Ubicon's current domain of knowledge experience and what it might do on the battlefield wasn't clear.

    Dr Salcedo volunteered that this should be taken seriously: the gas could be a neuroparalytic of some kind. Agents on a kill mission could fire it into a building in advance, and then take their time executing employees. Or just burn the building down - there'd be no responders.

    Mid-quarter, the EyeScope footage looked all too familiar, only this time there was a lot more information available. The analysts had cross-correlated earlier Tellex attacks, and it was established that this PR event was no accident - Tellex had tried to instirgate a riot. The agent involved had been equipped with a standard issue sidearm and a ED-210 security drone, so the plant never really had a chance. The agent still took several shots, and the drone
    failed to connect anything, at all but he was easily shot down.

    Unfortunately it just didn't matter. It took a few weeks to get the marketing statistics in, but admist the drama of the Phone War nuclear exchange, the public had no stomach for overt corporate violence and surveys showed that opinion of Ubicon was lower then ever. Public opinion was fickle - and Ubicon had overplayed its hand. "Never fear" was the word amongst the analysts as the quarter drew to a close however. We've had our disaster for the quarter - its done.

    Of course, no one should have been surprised when things got a lot worse.

    OpenSystems was supposed to be dead, they were supposed to be on the verge of collapse. So when 10 agents surrounded the Ubicon Construction plant and opened fire, the news took over an hour to reach the headquarters. No security arrived, and it was 4 hours until human resources teams showed up to properly collect the bodies, scrub the floors, and start the basic HR tasks to bury the event. All of which left everyone in management wondering, what the hell happened?

    Two days later, the second shoe dropped as an explosion ripped through the Ubicon manufacturing facility. Security camera footage pointed to another Tellex reprisal, but damage seemed relatively limited. The media had a field day with the event - the company which had lampooned Tellex itself just couldn't protect itself either. To make matters worse, the 11 Human Institute agents stomped into the Board Room facilities themselves, and then disappeared without incident.

    As the quarter drew to a close, the news continued to prattle about Samsung and Apple death tolls. There'd been no more large scale strikes like the opening, but agents had continued to fight each other repeatedly. One article in particular however stood out...
    In a move not seen in several decades, the French government has moved to curb inter-corp violence between the Apple and Samsung megacorporations. The French government announced a joint venture with the United Kingdom to forcibly seperate the warring parties from pubic contact. In a move criticized as draconian, armed forces will be engaged to escort Apple and Samsung employees around the two countries in any transit.

    The request from the French government was still a surprise when it arrived, but analysts and mid-levels were encouraging. Getting into the good graces of the French government could be big. Government contracts paid well. Government protection was still something worth having, even in the age of the corporate nuclear weapon. But French-British cooperation? That was a touchy subject. If two megacorps decided to settle a decades old IP score, what would happen with two enemies of a centuries old struggle?

    While dead corporations are the easiest to deal with, threatening the lives of employees and staff of a corporation can be highly effective in reducing the effectiveness and morale of low level employees. It can also prompt staff to switch corporations.

    ASSASSINATE <organization>
    Send agents to remove elements of a corporations work force. Will greatly alarm corporations and the public. Assassination missions have been known to end with entire corporate facilities being wiped off the map.

    Send agents to steal funds from an organization. Difficulty scales with volume to take. Corporations in debt will be robbed of their quarterly profits.

    KIDNAP <organization>
    Attempt to kidnap a scientist from another corporation, and put them to work in your own labs. The scientific community has become surprisingly accustomed to this manner of recruitment.

    Exploring the reachable areas of the world will allow attacking new organizations.

    1. Can we have a description of what our facilities are doing for us and how they relate to each other? ie. What do Dormatories do? What does Manufacturing do? What does the Hazardous Labs and other facilities do if we decide to build them?
    We were under the assumption that Dormatories increase security personel at buildings.

    2. Same goes for the research that we have done. What does it do for us?
    With future research, I don't expect a concrete answer, but can we get a quick blurb about where it might lead to?

    I didn't think OpenSystems was dead. I'm not happy to be right. We should get the technology to build more security buildings ASAP. For the time being, I'll handle everything except for Manufacturing, the second Dormitories (Dormitories 1), Testing, the Security Recruiting Office, and the Construction Plant. Feel free to double up with me- they're sending big teams.

    With more security staff and systems on-site, we can afford to send our people off-site to France and Britain as well. This should give us a much-needed boost to PR, as consumers will see that we're not "evil".

    Drones fight directly. The combat logs only show hits (otherwise you'd get a bazillion miss messages and they're already too long). If you note, the rioter was shooting at the drone and not the agent (probably a wise move for him). The "drone number" under inventory tells you how many drones will spawn for a given drone equipment.

    1. Currently facilities are just stuff. Your staff are distributed across them by size. Dormitories don't increase security size (Security Dormitories do that). So more facilities mean fewer % of your staff can be killed by a good assassination raid.

    2. Research unlocks things. You can see Lab-Assist robotics in company bonuses. I do need to jig up the output so the bonuses say what they're doing. But research's benefits are somewhat blind - you can't tell where things will lead. There ARE cross dependencies - some stuff will only unlock once you discover the relevant technology in other parts of the tech tree.

    We need to take out the smaller players, gentlemen, but carnage is not the only way, and I submit that chipping away at facilities and personnel will be more detrimental than simply arranging a buyout.

    Looks like I'm on guard duty with @Captain Marcus. Agree with the assesment on advance construction, if we can get some defenses to handle these attacks, I would feel much better. And also, once we can defend, I recommend we cause Tellx's turnover to increase greatly.

    I really want to research psychology with you Mojo, but we need security. I would totally dig a wonder weapon like a persuadertron, but at the moment, bullets are what persuades intruders to back off. We have too many facilities and we can't put up an effective defense of them currently. We can't wage corporate warfare effectively when the war is at our front door. I made the mistake that Dormitories as they were would increase some security personell but I was wrong in what it provided. At the very least, we will have rooms for employee expansion.

    @electricitylikesme I don't see the option for it, but I'm going to put my agents on PR for the French/British thing because that is what makes sense
    Our PR is in a bit of a bind, so I will assist the French with all of my agents. With the way the current wars and fights are going, I am not going to split my forces, they will meet aggression head on.

    Just a small post to officially shut this down. Uni started back up for me, and working on the actual game (which is a bunch of Python scripts) while also doing bi-daily updates is a terrible way to actually run things and takes a lot of time, since I was basically adding new features all the time (which entailed trying to not obliterate a bunch of savedata along the way and get something sensible to pop out).

    A little post-mortem would be that when it works and a post pops out, it's great, but you really need to lock down your game mechanics well in advance (and not redo the whole combat system a bunch of times).

    Sorry to people who got involved, this was an elaborate experiment to see if such a concept could work. Anyone who wants a copy of the code can PM me (since the parser deals with some unique things regarding vote counting and the forums pretty well).
