It has the same meaning in the US as well.

Considering Tony Bourdain was one of the people that disappeared, maybe that's what the show is really about?

I agree about the title (and actually tried to imply that in the thread title as well, though I probably wasn't so successful). It feels like it's trying to invoke the "left behind" implication, but doesn't work that great. I guess they just decided to use the same title as the novel, but it feels like they could have used something better for the show.

For most forumers I would agree. In SC's case though, I find it somehow endearing. Maybe it's just because it's so consistent and in-character. Given a blind comparison of only post contents, I'm pretty sure I could pick out SC's posts from anyone else on this forum.

I haven't been super impressed thus far but plan on still giving this show a chance. I think the setting is interesting enough on it's own that I'm not sure why they need to have the lead character (the sheriff) be crazy/ have something vaguely mystical going on. His entire thing with Mr. Chewing Tobacco and his dad is just overly weird, in fact pretty much everything in his life is absolutely bonkers. I'm also wondering when Chris Ecclestone's character is going to be more prominent since he's pretty highly credited but has had like, 3 or 4 small scenes between both episodes.

The teenage bacchanal in the pilot was one of the most absurd sequences I've seen in a long time. It was also clearly only possible because all of the actors playing 'high school students' are obviously in their 20s; if they had cast actual teenagers doing that stuff then the audience would have totally freaked out instead of passing over it as some naughty HBO fun.

Still, as some trashy light fare I plan to give it a chance.

The show has some flaws, but I am enjoying some of the characters, and there are a few smaller mysteries I am looking forward to seeing some movement on.
Yeah, that was 90210 bad in terms of casting people too old for the moment.

I'm still trying to figure out why Jill took off her shirt and pants just to choke a dude while he's jackin' it. Doesn't really seem necessary :P

As weird as that scene was, I kind of get what they were going for. She's reached a point where life has little meaning to her other than just going along and living in the moment. She takes her clothes off because she knows he's going to jerk it, and she figures it'll help him, because that's what she's expected to do. When he does ask her to go through with it and choke him to help get him off, she complies without missing a beat. Except that we see she's miserable throughout the whole thing. But what else does she have? What's the point of not just going along with it?

It's actually a really depressing scene that shows how nihilistic many of these people have become. And this is in contrast to her Dad's dogged effort to maintain normalcy, her Mom's complete abandonment of that normalcy, and her brother's tendency to bottle up his rage until he can't stand it anymore.

Watched ep 2. Not really into the show at all and they haven't really given any compelling reason to keep watching. Wayne is the only fascinating character, everyone else is bog standard with predictable character beats and boring dialogue. The silent cult is incredibly annoying too.

Watched the second episode last night.

Felt bad for the woman that lost her family...it seems like it wouldn't be as big a deal for a girl whose dad carries a gun each and every day to see someone else is packing. That whole scene - an entire day following around that woman (it was before school when they started and dark when they were going home) made me just feel awful. I could see someone have a breakdown just over them taking the candy she got for her kids.

Overall, the show is on the bubble. Sure I'll watch it because nothing else is on, but it's not like I really 'want' to watch it. I figure I'll give it another episode or two to go somewhere before I say 'fuck it'.

I'll admit I didn't read too much into the party being about how nihilistic everyone is. Rather, I read it as one of those overdone wild high school sex and drug parties that we always see on TV / in movies but never actually happen in real life. That, or the 'scare the olds' stories you see on the news about what kids these days are doing.

Cults are cults, cultists and cult leaders are creepy.

My theory is that Wayne knows that the disappearances were a byproduct of Project Zeus.

I watched the first episode and that's all I'm going to watch. As someone who almost lives close enough to NYC to commute there daily, I have absolutely zero interest in "let's see how fucked up and depressed everyone would be in the aftermath of 9/11 happening to the whole world". If I had found out they'd never even attempt to explain why or how the disappearances happened prior to watching the first episode I wouldn't have even watched that much.

I hope the silent cult's house catches fire because fuck those creepy harassing assholes.

One thing I can't help but wonder about:
Was the rock throwing incident orchestrated by be GR cult? It would be tough to coordinate something like that, but it seems awfully coincidental that they happened to be there just as he was on his way to the bank to pay off the church that they had just bid on. Plus, that look that the leader lady gave him at the end seemed like a but middle finger in his direction, like she knew that they had just screwed him over.

I don't know, maybe this was meant to be obvious, but I don't know for sure that it was. Could have just been a coincidence, or the show's way of displaying how unfair the universe is to everyone equally.

I think we can talk out of spoilers

I thought it was a coincidence but you could be correct. like, I don't think he gets hit if he doesn't get out of his car so I don't believe they had a plan to stop him.

It could honestly go either way. The GR are jerks, but they don't seem to be violent (yet). But on the other hand...

The way I read it was more like the incident at the beginning. They were like "hey wait, it was dude-man, let's get him too".

Yeah, probably so. You're right, it doesn't really seem like their MO. Plus, the episode had gone to pretty great lengths already to show how much the universe apparently hated him. This could have been just an exclamation point on that fact.

It almost felt like an anti-Breaking-Bad kind of thing. The whole plan and Casino caper, and then him messing up the guy that tried to steal his money and him feeling exhilarated in finally doing something right. The whole thing felt very much like something Walter White would do.

And then the other shoe drops.

I think this has some definite interesting possibilities for a story line. However, I'm a little reluctant to dive into it. Yes, they are because of some crazy Christian (me) reasons. The question is, other than the cults, which are an understandable consequence of the disappearances. Is that the extent of the "religiosity" to the show? If it's more of a impetus to start a story, it would game.

This wasn't threadworthy yet because there's just a pilot episode so far, so I'll dump it in here: you can watch the first episode of The After on Amazon Originals. Made by Chris Carter.
Although story elements are being kept mostly under wraps, Amazon describes the series as a post-apocalyptic drama centered on eight strangers who must work together in order to survive in a violent, unpredictable new world.

I haven't seen the show yet, but I've been curious about it. The thing is that I read the book back before it came out (I got an advanced copy to review) and I honestly didn't like it. Which makes it strange that I would want to see the show. Go figure.

I think he saw what he interpreted as "signs" earlier in the episode that he should use that table and put them on red. When he got lucky and hit 4 reds in a row, he was convinced that it was ordained by God.

And then God threw a rock at his head and said Peace, I'm out.

Basically, I saw the whole episode as him desperately searching for evidence that God hadn't abandoned him, and then just as he finally convinced himself that his prayers had been answered, the rug was pulled out from under him. I'm very interested to see where his character goes from here. It can only be up I would think. I can't imagine things getting much worse for him.

It's kind of hard to say since we're only a few episodes in. There are of course religious references, such as the comparisons to the Rapture are hard to avoid. That said, even the few religiously inclined characters in the show seem to understand this isn't the rapture because of the random nature of who disappeared. And even the cults don't feel very "religious". One of them is more focused on a mystical charismatic leader who doesn't seem particularly religious himself, and the other one... well, we still have no idea what they are about (other than being creepy and smoking cigarettes), but they seem like they could care less about traditional religion.

So basically, there are some religious themes, but only to the extent that they would be unavoidable in a show such as this. They are a very minor part of the show, and they definitely don't push that angle at all so far. Now of course that may change, but I've been pleasantly surprised at how they've handled it so far.

I just watched the pilot episode. It feels very "made for tv" movie-ish. The actors aren't great and the dialogue isn't good either. They aren't unwatchable, but its pretty rough.

That being said, the story is interesting enough to keep me intrigued.

    About the episode
Was that Jaime Kennedy as the clown? If so, that dude has put on some weight.

That demon thing was legitimately freaky. I google searched the phrase he kept saying and the closest approximation I could come up with was "Alea iacta est" which is Latin for "The die is cast." According to goole, the phrase is still used today in Italy (Il dado è tratto) to mean that events have passed a point of no return, that something inevitably will happen.

    Spooky.

The After is like a direct contrast to The Leftovers. I love the acting/dialogue in Leftovers, but the story is just hard to want to watch and everything is so emotionally draining.

as he went up I said '3 red!!' thinking obviously he was about to bet on 3 red and it was gonna come out.

then he bet on red and 3 red came out and I was like WTF! I figure it was to build tension differently and alright whatever. the 3 just seemed like the obvious message those birds were sending.
